Title: Hard-wired Sat Nav?
Post by: MJR on October 05, 2011, 11:16:07 pm
Howdy All,

Has anyone done this?
As gonna look into hard wiring my tom tom one into the car because I have had enough of the cable dangling everywhere  :signLOL:
So just wondered if anyone has actually done it, if so, how?

Cheers  :happy2:

Not seen it in a Golf but seen it in a Focus - it pops up from the dash.

Just done it at the weekend, piece of cake.  :happy2:

I used a blade connector into a spare slot in fuse box (switched live) to an inline fuse holder (Maplins) for live.  Soldered into a female 12v socket (Maplins) earthed to metal cage behind fuse box (soldering one end to 12v female socket and crimping ring connector to other end)

Positioned satnav next to rear view ran power lead in roof lining, down pillar trim (hidden inside) and into fuse box where I plug sat nav plug into my new 12v socket hidden in fusebox

Cost a tenner max for bits  :happy2:

hope that makes sense to you helps,

Have seen it done where the wires were soldered to the metal bits directly on the cigarrette plug and wrap the plug in insulation tape.

Better to have the option to remove it and / or use the spare 12v plug for something else

I was sick of the wire getting in the way on my Navigon. The windsreen is so far away on modern cars also, making the touch screen very difficult to reach and use.

Splicing into the 12v supply to the cigarette lighter and hard wiring through the centre console was best for me. The Sat-nav sits in front of the instrument cluster.

Very neat jon.  Unsure if it would get a decent signal there and the need to buy a slimmer Nav prevented me from mounting there.

I am a short arse though so sit close enough to the screen lol

Its a cheap unit and it struggles to pick up a signal some times even stuck to the window. It can take a while to work out where it is when i first switch it on but once it has its bearings it never loses them. I hadnt thought of it getting a bad signal where it is now but you have a point there!

Have you ever had yours stuck to the bottom of the window? Its almost impossible to reach on a Leon!
