Strange....seeing your car kind of makes me want to get rid of my colour-coding!

The only reason i chose white was because of the black trim it makes the car look lighter and more sportier to my eye. the down side is is doesn't look as good standing directly behind the back which was my reason for the lights. I have spent endless time trying to think of a way to keep the side trim black or the side profile should i say and then alter the rear view but cant really come up with anything that works. IMHO ofcourse.

Wasnt sure where to put this rant from a angry bald man so thought it should go as part of my build thread.

Please dont read if you get bored easily it is a long whinging post.  :drinking:

Ok i have been having problems with my new bumper and paint job now for a couple of months, finally sorted today so i feel i need to tell the story, to help me cleanse and move on

i found a body shop in the midlands who was willing to take on the bonding of the 2 parts that make up the R32 rear bumper which now looks like this.

At the same time they also did my side skirts and front splitter.
So  I dropped the car off after the second forum meet, and John_O was very kind in giving me a lift back. the car was ready after a week so i made plans to go down there. Then i got a phone call at the last minute telling me that the join had split a little when brought out into the cold, so it needed doing again. No problem with this it made sense to me. So i waited patiently for another week, the guy told me on the Thursday he was having problems with his oven but the car would be ready for Saturday. So i got on my train  and arrived to see my car sitting waiting on my friends drive. looking lovely.
I had left instructions for the car not to be washed but it clearly had when i arrived so as all anal GTI owner's know i started to get a raised heart beat. Had a look at the bumper with my friend and the actual bonding of the 2 parts was excellent i was really impressed with the job. But my friend had noticed that the split in the join was still there, were the chap had originally said it was. And to add to this the actual paint job was poor, it had orange peel effect all over the side with the split. So basically reading between the lines the car had not even been touched in the second week, the split was still there.
So i took the car home on the understanding that this chap would have to do it all again. A big fook around for me as i live 100 odd miles away.
Got the car home and give it a good wash to have a look at the paint job and tidy the interior as it had got dirty some how.
Well, this is when i started spitting feathers. First off they had been eating there dinner in my car i found bits of food and sh*t under the seats  :chicken:
Then it normally takes about 2 hours to wash the car i take my time to ensure no damage is done, Well it took me about 20 mins the dirt just fell off and the car looked a bright white normally its got a creamy hue to it, they had stripped off all the expensive wax i had on my car. this stuff.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftomashandmilly%2FDetailing_pics%2Fdetailingpics026-1.jpg&hash=407be6fd0c617d2d5bdff3a687b3b68e76ec45e7)

Next i found a scratch on the wheel, nothing to cry about but it wasn't there before hand.  :chicken:
Then i found over spray on the front VW badge.  :chicken:
next up was what looked like a burn on the paint about the size of a 10p on the bottom of the wing, turned out to be clear coat over spray.  :chicken:
Then i found a 3 inch piece of what felt like stone, but was actually the bonding agent they had used to fix the side skirt's  :chicken:

All of this really made me feel very sad and angry, as i had not even got a stone chip on my paint work in 10 months of ownership. I am MR anal about the car dont even like the misses in it   it does not go anywhere near supermarket's, town centre's or curbs.  :embarrassed:

Sorry for prattling on only half way through so far.  :indifferent:

Now the biggest thing of all that has pissed me off is, over the next six weeks, the chap answered only one of my phone calls, i rang him almost every day but he only answered my call by mistake i think. i went mad at him as you would after all this time in between being left to boil, all he could do was apologize, and say he had been to busy to return my calls, but said he would do the job again and would even come and pick the car up.
After this it went back to the routine of not answering my calls, and i had already decided that there is no way on this planet i was going to hand my car back to this disrespectful sh*t, so via email we agreed to get the job, fixed up my end including the paint correction work for all the above mess. And yes you guest it i sent him the quotes and the email i got back after 8 days said " i may as well give you all the money back as it would only cost me 50 pound to put the job right.
I am telling this now as i know i will not see any of the money to do the bumper again and fix the fook ups.

I got three quotes to get the bumper re-sprayed and foolishly went with the cheapest, i guess trying to ensure that i would get some back from the sh*t if i gave him a reasonable price.
so this cheapest quote was 200 pound dropped the car off, got the job done and had to drop it straight off at the detailers to do all the corrective work. he rang me up and said Tom there is no-way you should accept this, its one of the worst spray jobs i have ever seen.   :chicken:  and here it is.  :chicken: :chicken: :chicken:

Went back and demanded my money back, and he said i know my rights you have got to give me a try and fix it. So after some negotiating i decided to let him try again only if he took the bumper off and i would drive the car home bumperless to make sure they didn't fook up my freshly finished corrective detail.  :rolleye:

Took the car in on Monday with my balls in my mouth, and he said look here is your money back, i dont think we can achieve the standard you are after.  (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftomashandmilly%2FDaft_stuff%2Fwow1.gif&hash=32e7a28881552b2e745669ae9d7fd7b89afea6d3)

Well after 2 months of this mess and time off work trying to sort it out,i finally found a brilliant body shop, and the job they have done makes the paint from the factory look poor it literally is perfect.  :jumpmove: :jumpmove: :jumpmove:

Sorry for putting you lot through this but The 2 things i hate most in life have been around me lately.
And they are  people who show no respect at all, and cant even find one minute in the day to return a call from an a grieved customer.  :fighting:

But more than that People foooooking with my lovely GTI

Thought i needed to update my car thread, 4 little mods added while i wait for the rimmage.

First off ickle Mazda Ariel

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftomashandmilly%2FDetailing_pics%2FIMG_0800.jpg&hash=0ca6ea53e1c6e02749d8f0426b624f9e238a3bf7)

then as posted in another thread got the carbon vinyl mask and badge to try out, and its growing on me more and more.
Also got myself a proper red badge for the front to finish off this area.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftomashandmilly%2FDetailing_pics%2FIMG_0789.jpg&hash=cf027eb486ee60bbab857869a6d5de80e496a73c)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftomashandmilly%2FDetailing_pics%2FIMG_0791.jpg&hash=f3a0db8cfeb6599edacd7d3670c28306938a69d5)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftomashandmilly%2FDetailing_pics%2FIMG_0793.jpg&hash=896422ac1693e0940700ba433b26c9918f44c5ba)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftomashandmilly%2FDetailing_pics%2FIMG_0788.jpg&hash=b0ada27a5fbd653aae3e8436d7db330a16203adf)

And finally had a little eureka moment with this idea, wanted to be able to show the front end off without the plate. Mainly at all the shows and for photos.
Had this mod on the car for over a week now and a good few hundred miles, and it has stayed put so i am confident it wont fly off. it has also been speed tested
Also the magnets are that powerful you dont even need to line it up, it pulls out of your hand into the perfect spot.  :happy2:

http://s294.photobucket.com/albums/mm104/tomashandmilly/video/?action=view&current=magneticplate.flv

Also i know peeps are going to say it is easily stolen, but if some one wants to pinch it, then it only takes 15 seconds to take off with a little posi-drive.

Post by: JPC on May 05, 2009, 08:52:29 pm
i was thinking about the magnetic idea when i was in my "plate switching" days. Have you got some soft stuff on the underside of the plate to stop scratches to that lovely grill?
Title: Re: My car
Post by: Top Cat on May 05, 2009, 09:19:55 pm
Thanks for all the kind comments chaps.  :happy2:

The magnet mod is really cheap, i bought some metal plates for it but did not realize the would be alloy  :rolleye:
So you could do it with the plastic ones as all i had to do was stick half of the magnets to the back of the plate.

@ JPC  I bought some adhesive backed felt from a hobby shop, and stuck it to it, to avoid scratches. Not to sure how long it will last outside but it only costs pennies.
The only problem is if say for example you took your plates off for pics at one location and forgot to put it back on and drove off some where else and had to drive the 25 miles back to retrieve your plate. Not that i would be so stupid to do that   :ashamed: :ashamed: :ashamed:   :signIWS:

After what seems like i waited 2 years, my new wheels arrived recently, i was waiting for the my KW top mounts to be fitted and the ride height dropped further before i posted pics but i cant tweak the camber with the V2 springs i have on mine as they are to fat, so ride height has to wait for the new springs.  :rolleye:

In case you have been living on the moon they are Work VS - XX  19inch 8.5j  45offset. With PS 2 tyres all round.

Not to everyone's taste, but a quality 3 piece split rim pretty light with a anodized dish.

My new plate is now installed on the car.  :innocent:

I have been looking For a plate with Top cat in it for ages but with no luck.

So i decided to take a gamble on the name of the new Mk6 range topper due out soon.
If they do call it the R 20 and i buy one, this plate will come into its own.

If they dont call it the R 20 then i still like this plate for my current GTI. The six letters gives the back symmetry.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftomashandmilly%2FDetailing_pics%2FIMG_1118.jpg&hash=a6c67b0b8c42aa4e414c8b2045cf352df0596c0f)

new S3 IC on.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftomashandmilly%2FDetailing_pics%2FIMG_1121.jpg&hash=538d0e52e1323b29e525f16ff4abb6f31a9cdbfe)

And finally this sexy looking thing.  :jumpmove:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftomashandmilly%2FDetailing_pics%2FIMG_1122.jpg&hash=01a1a3b509edbb7c7adfcc48c4c802daf4fbb1cb)

Big thank you to a member on here for getting me the Twintercooler at a great price. Cheers Nick.  :drinking:

But a extra big thanks to Mat ED 30 who spent hours fitting them for me, a lot of the time in the pouring rain lying down in puddles.
:embarrassed:
cant fault his problem solving skills and there was only one screw left at the end.

I owe you one buddy big time.  thanks again.  happy2:

I only had enough fuel to scrape it home so i was conserving fuel all the way. Then when i new i had enough it was time to test it out.

Bollocks to any placebo effect the car was a lot faster, i wouldn't say it felt like getting it mapped again but i was amazed by the extra power, it felt like the engine was lighter and the exhaust note sounded really crisp and free.
I got this mod purely for the cooling effect and to limit heat soak but the extra power is a real bonus.  :innocent:

Yes Luke the S3 one is like the GTI one on steroids, its a fair bit thicker.

Mat is your man again if you want one of them, he supplied mine. And you dont need to order the pipes as you can order the S3 forge ones which is a good saving.

Nope i bought it from a German bloke who doesn't speak very good English.

Its bonded onto a normal diffusor, its like a carbon material with loads of coats of gloss on, almost like a vinyl wrap.

The fit is like stock but for some reason i need to nip a bit off the plastic clip at one end which is stopping it sitting all the way home on the left side. only a 5 min job when i can be arsed.  :happy2:

Ok new front brakes finally on and run in, i am planning on testing them properly for the first time at the weekend. :scared:

As above they are from a RS4 2002 model.

I ended up with these brakes after much help from DaveB. I would have loved to have gone balls out and got a big brake kit like Tony Danza's Alcons, but i was severely restricted by my bloody  work wheels, They already stick out 18 and a half mil further than the Monza's, which meant i had to look for options that did not need a spacer.

Also they had to fit inside my 17in track wheels, which amazingly these do, just.  :chicken:

My final consideration was the usage, I plan to do the ring trip, maximum twice a year, and no more than 4 track days a year to add to this. So for me all this considered, and with a lot of research i decided that i needed something a bit better than the R 32/ S3 set up, but not something as mad as some of the big kits on here.  :happy2:
These should be pretty capable after all they have come off a heavier car with 330 BHP as standard.

The set up is - Audi Rs4 (B5) Plain semi floating discs. size  360 x 32mil
                                       Goodridge Hoses/Banjo Bolts
                                        2 pot calipers.
Mintex standard road pads  + some track pads to swap too when on track.

And a pic of my 17in track wheel just fitting over the 360mil disc,  pretty mad.  :rolleye:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftomashandmilly%2Fpics_since_clubsports%2FIMG_1531.jpg&hash=a07991ae862568532dddf507fb36f40685ecc882)

I must give a big thanks to DaveB for persevering with me getting this kit on the car, i believe its the first Mk 5 with these on and it has taken a lot of engineering by Dave to achieve this.  The guy really does know his onions.   :congrats:

Excellent choice, TC - You've thoroughly thought about your usage and bought accordingly.

A couple of Ring trips and about 4 trackdays a year is about my level of intention too. Although I have today received news of an opportunity to revisit Spa again. I think I need to rearrange my calendar to do the Ring and Spa in the same trips.

Your car will look stunning both on road and track and more importantly you'll feel the benefit of the lighter TD's on track (and Ring).

If i had known i was going to get bitten by the bug after visiting the ring, then i would have made far better plans than i initially did.
All my recent mods have been to make my car more track focused to some extent while still trying to keep it usable. The old word compromise has been ringing round my head for months.  :rolleye:

I am counting the days down to get on the track and also get over to the ring.

....No, "compromise" isn't the way to do it IMO - Achieving "Balance" is the better way to approach modding your car to be successful as both a practical performance road car and a trackday joy. It doesn't have to be stripped out and roll-caged etc to give you fun on track. The car itself has no idea whether it's being driven enthusiastically on the road or the track - What works well for one can be something which works well for the other. Your 'project' will evolve - The slippery slope never ends!

Very interesting set of brakes these, with Toms wheels we often joked about the BBK picking us as opposed to us picking the BBK. I'm really interested in how they do on the track as the original RS4 purists always rated them well especially when used with the correct pads.

Audi did a competition package for the RS4 which comprised drilled discs and "competition" pads (which are Pagid RS29's) see pic

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fae279%2FDelta-Performance%2F657RS4_sport_brakes.jpg&hash=265f67bff4f2189815dc8cc9d29a21efc612f1df)

There was a huge gap betweenthe 2001 B5 RS4 and the 2006 8 pot equipped RS4 B7 with little in the way of an upgrade path for B5 owners so the competion package was the way to go, theres been a plenty of track slagging in 1400kg RS4s on these brakes many of which were running a 2.7Bi turbo V6 doing a reliable 500BHP.

Anyway point of my rambling is that they come up on ebay fairly regularly and even if you have to replace the discs, then its potentially a great track proven "clubman" brake setup for potentially  way way less than 4 figures and thats even with Pagid RS pads included in that ball park price!

And not withstanding all that a good compromise if you have limitting rimmage (and TC's were limiting!!!)

So thanks for your patience TC, just need to get them on track now ands see how you go.....

Probably the only 360mm setup that goes under 17's as well!!!

He pulled loads of lines due to the exchange rate and VW UK putting prices up, look what they've done with open grille foglamps.

It's cheaper to import them direct from Germany, Mike the owner will tell you this - he's a good lad and would rather lose business than shaft someone and ruin his reputation.

Unlike someone else we know selling extortionately overpriced OEM parts you can get from the dealer down the road...

The pic of that caliper, im sure i have some of them 2 pot calipers in the shed...? I got them off a mate ages ago and they have just been sat there,  will get them out tomorrow and take a pic if any one is needing some?

Darren

Same as the Mk4 R32 Caliper only Black, if you 've got the carriers for them then give me a shout. Its always handy to have some under the stairs that are refurbable for people with crazy/expensive/gorgeous/ridiculously limiting rimmage  :booty:

PS ta 4 pm re RNS510 - defo wnat one just dont know when in the next 8 weeks or so!

You would be correct in thinking that, yes.  :happy2:

And they were lovingly looked after, came off the car regulary to be waxed and polished.

:happy2:
These should be pretty capable after all they have come off a heavier car with 330 BHP as standard.

well chuffed you got these as its opened up the market for me. I couldn’t justify 1500+ for a bbk yet, but  VFM wise I think this has to be one of the best kits available on the market, once I get the pads and discs it will only be a couple hundred more than a new S3 345mm setup.

So ive sorted myself out with set of these calipers/carriers/brakelines/dustshields. Jut need to save up and get some new 360x32 discs.  Don’t think ill bother with the drilled hardcore discs  though

Im presuming that with a disc this size the stopping power is going to be similar to that of a 4 pot with smaller discs. But for a lot less.

You have about the same amount of track time as me planned, With some track pads, good fluid, and braided lines I reckon these pads will be able to go for a good amount of time before we get fade.

Have you tried it on track yet TC

Looking forward to seeing your car again, TC. Also at the Ring - You owe me a passenger ride but I promise I won't navigate!

Methinks that if you can, you would enjoy a track day at Spa sometime but then you'd only have 3 other track days left for your annual quota

12 months ago I said I'd never drive the Ring, so beware! You were on my first ever drive on it.

Ok, so i couldn't wait any longer. Today i took off my Winter/track wheels.  :jumping: Although it really improves the feel and the handling, 17inch TD's in white really looked gash to my eye, and made me feel sad every time i looked at the car.  :sad1:

So even though the pot holes are still everywhere the Works went back on.
Cant believe how much it changes the look of the car and it felt like i was driving a limo compared to the TD's with semi slicks.  :driver:

Continuing my theme of refreshing the interior of my car.

Right from the second i picked it up from the dealer, i found the interior a nice grown up place to be, nothing amazing, but with the recaro's i was happy.

The one thing that let it down, and to my eye looked dated was the steering wheel.

So i have bough this       Scirocco R DSG jobby.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftomashandmilly%2FDetailing_pics%2FBqPLbkQB2kKGrHqQOKj4EupdGL5CBLu4-1.jpg&hash=dd7ce3db6c1a55bb22d1495b02afd09358361424)

All i wanted really was a Mk6 GTI steering wheel with the red stitching, but finding one with DSG paddles was difficult without paying dealer prices.  :sad1:
So this one i have bought is being modified as we speak with a couple of changes, the Piano  black inserts and Multi-function looks the dogs bollocks but doesn't match my brushed alu interior, ( which i love   ) so this is being swapped and going in a car that is crying out for the Piano black bits.  :pomppomp:
Should also have a update on the other mod.  :innocent: on Tuesday.

Been mad busy at work lately so not had chance to get much done of late.
Mk6 R steering wheel is fitted now thanks to JPC, just need to fit my Osir paddles back on so pics will be coming once there on, plus i have another little interior mod from gulf coming at inters

ITG intake probs wont be fitted in time to kick Joes butt up the strip, as i am to busy, but will try and make time on Friday.  :driver:

Also got some S3 rears fully refurbed, and ready to go on.

and finally got my mask sprayed up after seeing this pic.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg686.imageshack.us%2Fimg686%2F9580%2Ffrozen7.jpg&hash=98054baf44d87f8679519c6564ab8b28f62272de) (http://img686.imageshack.us/i/frozen7.jpg/)

The colour is frozen grey, not available in this country as yet, so Prospray who did the job just tried to match it as best the could.

Pics are crap, car is dirty, and they dont show the colour up to well. Its very light when in light and goes a darker grey as well.
the finish is metalic, mat and satin all in one.  :stupid:
really happy with it.  :pomppomp:

Seeing as this thread has come back from the dead, i may as well update it.

Had some great fun up the strip recently at Inters. I had 2 duals with KO 4 cars and beat both. Obviously both cars had issues at the time, but that  means fook all to me i still had them both.

Anyway my time seems pretty good, i personally think the timing at inters is a bit random. I honestly dont think my time was as fast as this proof suggests but hay ho i have a certificate to prove it.  :driver:

That silver instrument pod insert looks ace and really suits the rest of what you've done in that whole area (Mk6 wheel etc). Nice photography too.. Cool lighting. It's the absolute opposite of my approach which prefers it all dulled down and black in the dashboard area and trim.

I forgot to update this thread again.  :fighting2:

I had my S3 rears fitted a few weeks back, by the leg end who is SteveP.  :noteworthy:  ( note to all tuners. No brake fluid spilt.  :innocent: )

My car really needed the better balance these provide. With my big stopper's upfront, the car would lurch a bit under heavy braking. This hopefully is cured now, and after initial testing it does seem to have better balance, though i have not really tested them to the extreme yet.  :happy2:

They wont be staying white either, they don't look out of place in white, but they will be going black next year.

Hey TC, looked through your thread, where did you get the mats from? is it front and back?
Have you done much to the motor recently?
Summer wheels going back on soon?

I have not done a thing to the car for ages, i have literally just been taking the car out of garage once every 10 days or so to keep her loose. It was last washed in September, and i have put no more than a tank of fuel in since then.

As for mods i have some S3 lower arms to go on, i have had them since the end of summer but not fiited yet.  :ashamed:

Here is the link for the mats.   :happy2:      http://www.autostyle.co.uk/

How much do you want for the Seats, love them?
Title: Re: My car
Post by: Top Cat on April 02, 2011, 12:32:54 am
I have promised some time ago first and second refusal on the seats. so if they are still interested then they get first go.

These seats go for crazy prices as they are so rare. Not sure what i want for them yet, but would need a cloth set in return as part of the deal.  :happy2:
Title: Re: My car
Post by: golfecho5 on April 02, 2011, 12:48:48 am
Understand that.

Only got the full leather GTi seats in the same colour in exchange.
If things change then call me on 07595 254725

Not sure how to put a price on them but I suppose it goes back to what you paid at the end of the day.

Good luck with the sales anyway. Great kit.

I think there are pics of my TD's on a page further back in the thread. I think they would need painting as well as although they are straight and not been near a curb the paint is peeling at points and on is slightly discoloured.

Would probably just swap these for some 17in monza's if some one wants.  :happy2:

Went for a test drive yesterday. took out a S2 with the performance pack on, 240 BHP.  It went like sh*t off a shovel, they had forgotten to fit a suspension to the one i drove and there was a stick by my left knee that i had to keep grabbing.  I had to dig a hole next to the door to get in ( man they are low cars.  :chicken: ) and i felt like a Chilean minor getting out. The paint work is dubious and the refinement was non existent  but i loved it.  :drinking: Think i need to learn how to drive sharpish, or i can see myself doing Torvel and Dean's everywhere.

:drinking: Think i need to learn how to drive sharpish, or i can see myself doing Torvel and Dean's everywhere.

.... :congrats: :congrats: Absolutely brilliant piece of wordsmithing, TC, and perfectly describing exactly why I don't like them, but who cares - You like them and that's the important thing. What colour?

P.S.- You missed out what a horrendous turning circle they have

Make sure you join the Exige owners club. My mate Simon was over at Anglesey with the club this weekend. He's got a awesome orange Exige S2, as well as a classic Elan.

They are fabulously addictive cars, but not too reliable by the sound of it!

They dont seem to bad reliability wise, from what i have been reading, most of the niggles are electrical like the dash not working.  :rolleye: but they are very simple basic cars so fingers crossed i should be ok. Test drove 2 now and already love them.

Cheers guys, the car will be fully back to stock in less than 2 weeks now, very excited about the new car, but have been questioning my decision to change up almost every minute. Tiz truly a wonderful car to look at and drive, but also a big part of that enjoyment is hanging around on here, which i still will so not all bad.  :drinking:

I have made my mind up on the Exige i want, hopefully it will still be there when i am in a position to buy.

Found this video when researching. Enjoy chaps its only short but very sweet.  :driver:
