My Pirelli is approaching it's 3rd birthday and the folks at VW have just posted me a letter asking if I want to extend the warranty, which looking at the comprehensive level is about £25 quid per month. Question is, has anyone extended their VW warranty and is it worth it? Guess like any insurance/warranty its all about peace of mind but was wondering what peoples views were.

I wouldnt, and in fact havent.

I would, and I did.
Its saved me a chunk of cash thanks to a faulty door lock http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,31476.msg390947.html#msg390947 so I'm just about even on the premium. I'd also say if you have DSG, it's good peace of mind if the mechatronics unit goes south on you as well.
You will, however, have to have all servicing done by the main dealer network. The extended warranty is underwritten by an insurer, rather than a manufacturer product, and they insist that all servicing is by dealers.

Never knew that :scared: When we bought our Ed30 the dealer never mentioned this when we took the Extended Warranty. One thing that is puzzling is why the car had a full service at 5000 miles. :stupid:

Our Ed is 3 in October and have just been offered exteneded at 29.99 per month. As the car is low mileage and used a little we have decided to save the money just in case. If we don't need it for the golf happy days!!!

Perhaps it only did 5000 miles in 12 months. Or maybe it did a lot of very short runs from cold or stop start driving.
Services are Time & Distance (10,000miles OR 12 months), or LongLife (the vehicle may have a service indicator that requested service). This can happen if, for example, lots of short runs have caused changes in the engine oil which triggers service request.

I insisted that My ED30 had a full service when i purchased it at 10 months old with only 4,200 miles on the clock and the service book was duly stamped. Now coming up to 4 years old its booked in for the dreaded cambelt/waterpump DSG service and the 4th year service....not looking forward to the invoice !!!
So with regard to having a full service at 5000 a similar situation to mine might have occured

Just extended my warranty for the 2nd year (now 4 yrs old) and think it's definately worth it as just had my DSG control unit replaced under warranty
Go for piece of mind especially if you have DSG!

might be worthwhile checking warranty direct's prices. their cover is fairly comprehensive and they're not as expensive as i thought, esp if you're doing lower miles.
-
i was gona extend mine but was ill when it was due and completely 4got :sad1:

I extended mine for 3 years with my local dealer just for piece of mind really in case anything went wrong with the DSG. The 3 years are up in May & I was thinking I should of just put the money in an account to pay for repairs instead as I hadn't had to use it at all. Then a couple of weeks ago the car developed a problem that required a new injector which was covered so I've pretty much got my money back

Just had the extended warranty letter to for my 3yr old GTI - debating whether to bother but it's a manual so no problem with DSG and I've had the aircon compressor replaced 12months ago, quote was £296 including roadside assistance for 15,000miles but with £100 excess - I'm probably better off keeping the £300 in the bank!!
I have taken up the srvicing offer though - £325 rather than £349 (slight discount at my local dealer) which will include the 4th & 5th service + 2 MOTs, a pretty good deal I think as independents in my area aren't really any cheaper
