Title: Massive missfire
Post by: keano on October 15, 2011, 05:27:08 pm
Hello there,

Just been driving back home and gave it some beans, and the car hesitated, fluttered on boost, and now runs like a bag of rusty bollocks nails.

The engine shakes the entire car and the tiny 4 pot engine now sounds like a V8 .

Plugs changed 2 weeks ago. Coilpacks never changed...

This is a pic of one of my coils next to my normal looking one. Does this look burnt out to you?

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm7.static.flickr.com%2F6162%2F6246935816_473bf39b08_z.jpg&hash=e593b07eb155a31591c17e6eca948198845c6fbf)

I rang Dave at PDT who was VERYYY helpful and I can't thank him enough for answering to an idiot like me, twice on a Saturday evening.  :drinking: :drinking:  :notworthy: He explained its likely to be a coilpack or a sparkplug that isnt tight enough..

Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem? And how they overcame it.

Nick

Very commom.  There maybe be a dealer recall on your coils packs which should get you a set of 4 for free, phone VW monday and give them your reg number and ask them if there any recalls on your car.

Cheers Nick. Just been outside to take a video...

I'm pretty sure VW said I wasn't down for the coilpacks :(

sounds like an iffy coilpack to me, went through loads on my mk4 golf, hence why I drive around with spares in my boot

Was the rusty looking coilpack from cylinder 4 by any chance(passeneger side one)

Sounds like mine when my coil pack was gone.

Did a fault light come on??. If it did get it scanned, if not make sure a spark plug is'nt loose and go from there.

Why do you ask?

I had a mis fire on my car shortly after fitting new plugs and it turned out to be a faulty plug.  Have you still got your old plugs to try and see if it runs okay. Failing that it will be a scan to see which cylinder shows the misfire or change all 4.  If it was me and the plugs were fine then Id change all four coilpacks as I think if ones gone then its reasonable to think the others may not be far off from going.

A duff spark plug won't show a fault, a duff coilpack will... :)

Well...

My exhaust light is always on due to a 3" downpipe recently being fitted.

However, when driving on misfire, the light will flash??  :chicken: :chicken:

Yeah I checked them Dave. They all tightened up the tiniest of amounts. Like 1/180th of a turn lol.

I'll ring vw about the free coils then if not, I'll get in touch :)

Thanks again Dave

Who changed the plugs Nick? I did mine as per the pic on the box, hand tight then 2/3 of a turn. Think Im going to invest in a torque wrench to be extra sure.  Same for piece of mind when re doing oil filter housing.

UPDATE:

Rang customer services today to ask why my coilpacks have been marked as recalled when infact they hadn't.

Turns out that VW Sheffield had ticked the recall box and claimed to have swapped them, but actually hadn't!!

Took my car to VW Doncaster, and they dealt with customer services and also VW Sheffield to provide me with 4 new coil packs and labour free of cost!!!

Turns out that they are charging VW Sheffield for it all, as they dropped the bollock!!  :happy2: :happy2: :happy2:

Car should be back tomorrow afternoon, running sweet again    :happy2:

Should the new coils be red? Or black? I'm sure that my coils are black but I did take it in for the update. :-/

Hayseldens at pretty good, never had an issue with them.

Out of interest what build month and year is yours Keano? I have a May 2007 edition 30 and was advised that mine didn't need the recall even though one had failed on me. Also what were the part numbers of the pnes taken out. Just looking to compare as I replaced all 4 of mine to be on the safe side.

Knock sensors will pick up a missfire from plugs or coils. I would change both to be sure. The plug that is missing due to a faulty coilpack won't be at it's best anyway.

I think its early 2007 Ste. At first I was advised it didn't need doing, then it did  :chicken:   I'd give them another ring and check mate.

The ones that were taken out ended in a 'C' and they were the originals with the car. I'll let you know what the new ones are when I pick it up. :happy2:

I think I'd be making a point of having a one way chat with the service manager at Sheffield. In particular I'd be asking him why you might have to pay for new plugs. I'd most likely follow this conversation up with a 'nice' letter to the dealer principal of Sheffield, and copy it to VW Customer Services  I'm sure the spanner monkey will say 'a box was ticked in error' but that really undermines the entire tick checklist that they give us when they have serviced our cars.

Cos it would really p**s on my chips if my car had sustained any sort of damage, even to consumable parts, due to a dealer claiming something had been carried out that wasn't. They got caught this time. I wonder how many times Sheffield have got away with it in other circumstances...

Get 'em, Keano!

The first thing I'm going to do is write a letter to the service manager @ Doncaster, praising the chap that dealt with my problem.

He was on the phone for an age trying to sort it out for me.

I think I'll drop him a crate of 'special brew' off when I see him again tomorrow  :happy2:

As for Sheffield. I'll get in touch about my sparkplugs, but as the car has only been driven for about 5 miles whilst faulty, I can't imagine the damage will be too severe. And of course I've always never been one to cause a fuss!

Got the car back :)

Running better than ever. The small hesitation on gear changes has disappeared, which I thought was normal, but obviously not!

Looking forward to a long blast to Leeds tonight to give it a 'thorough' road test  :driver:

Case closed  :happy2:
