i need to get some front tyres for my standard 17" Monzas. I want decent branded, such as Pirelli, Dunlop, Goodyear etc...anyone had to buy any recently and got a good price? secondly, is it worth buying tyres on the net and taking them to be fitted locally or is there no savings to be had? thanks.

To be honest I allways find it's less hassle just go and buy them and have them fitted
On the net you pay postage and then the fitting charge at the garage...waiting for them to come in the post etc, may not be much in it when the post etc gets added on
Have a look at the Vredstein tyres, saw a post on some the other day, good tyres :congrats:

I always buy off net, just make sure you get correct size, load index and speed rating, bear in mind fitting will be 10-12.50 per wheel... But I normally find a £20 per wheel saving...

I've been looking at those recommened, but can't find them anywhere in my current tyre size (215/35/19) not sure if I can get away with slightly bigger..
only heard good things from them though

am running 225/35/19 on a 8j rim>>Buying tyres of the net is a lot cheaper and if you can find a good tyre fitter (like me :signLOL ) who isn't going to catch your wheels then it will save you some money

Lowered at all?
-
lowered on kw v1--look at my build thread

I am on My 5th GTI now and the Previous 3 have all Ran Toyo Proxes T-1R (My current GTI will be wearing them when the tyres it camse with wear out (Dunlop Sp Sports).
They squeal a little more when your chucking it around, but the wear rate is excellent (long Life) and they are GREAt in the wet!!.
And before someone ask no i dont work for Toyo lol, i just love that tyre!! And at only around £415 for a full set (plus fitting) they leave you with cash for other mods :happy2:
-
i had avon on my ch's and they were good on dry and wet
-
I have GY asymetric 2 and Kumho kw27, and both sets were bought from a local fitter for less than my tyres, black circles, or camskill. The two sets were both approx £100 per tyre fitted.
-
Get Dunlops or Goodyear (i am biased I work for them!!!)
Had SP SPORT MAXX and MAXX TT on the alfa and thought they were great. have Vredesign Rain Expert 2 on the Golf and cant wait to change them, dont feel condifant in them at all
-
I dont think you can beat Yokohama parada spec II's, not quite as good as others in the wet but SERIOUSLY good in the dry, they do where fast though as the compound is quite soft.
Personally i go for grip over longevity every day of the week. Its not just about grip when hooning, but also in an emergency.
Did you know an F1 team spends more on tyres than any other single part of the car, its the only point of contact between the car and the road, so all that power and powerful brakes mean nothing if the tyres dont grip. Its a point thats often overlooked by fast road users.
-
Agree totally.
I'm going for either Pilot Sport 3's (£560!!!) or Assymetric 2's, but can't decide :(
£20 per corner more for the PS3's
-
i guess there's some degree of bias with tyres and perspective...however, i want some reasonable wear and good grip...might take a look at the Toyos.
-
I put the PS3's on mine and they have totally transformed the car. I can't recommend them enough.
-
For Ps3s on mine too great tyres, certainly didn't pay that much each for them, paid £243 fitted for the fronts :happy2:

That's a good price, best I could get was £139 each fitted, and I tried about 40 places lol

I hate to admit it but it was good old quickfit, pay upfront online and book a slot and it is cheaper.
-
18"? How long ago was that?
-
Only 17s as per OPs question, was back in jan time

I've run T1-S, T1-R, and R888 toyos on a mix of cars, and none of them liked wet surfaces. Obviously the R888 was shocking if there was even a hint of standing water, as it had nowhere to go, but I can't say I was impressed with the T1-R or T1-S in standing water either. Good VFM tyres, but that's about it.
-
The cheaper toyo's are quite poor. Im surprised you think the 888's were poor on wet surfaces, most people say they are outstanding for wet grip but terrible in standing water.
I had the R1R's on until a couple of weeks ago, which are the same compound as the 888's and they are better in the wet than any other tyre i have tried.

I can only second this, the R1R is the best of both worlds, grip like 888 in the dry and in the wet :notworthy:

I have heard some great things about the new Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetrics and I think they will be my next tyre (probably Feb 2012 time though) he hopes.....nails and general failure permitting. :driver:
-
I've just fitted two p zero rosso's to the front on my 18's, got them for £120 ea fitted, got them all round now and really impressed so far in both the dry and extreme wet. I had Bridgestone RE050A on beforehand and can't believe how much quieter the Pirellis are.
