Title: New ED30 owner just joined Forum
Post by: Tamiyoman on October 16, 2011, 11:09:05 pm
New Member From Kings Lynn Area (Norfolk), after 2 years of saving i finally have mine!.

My new Pride and Joy is an 08 plate Candy White 5 door, with DSG (Its great, im loving my first DSG box!), I was lucky to find this one (although i travelled for it lol) the previous owner was a little tick box happy when it came to the options list

build number 2235 with build date of April 2008.

The 1st owner specced the following options:-

Bi-Xenons, Sat Nav & Premium Soundpack, Highline Comp, MFA Wheel, Cruise control, Sunroof, Centre Arm Rest with Ipod Prep, Privacy Glass, Rear Parking Sensors, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) (Noticed in the service history book that 2 sensors were replaced at last service), Winter Pack, Luxury Pack 2 ( i think so anyway as the mirrors tint at night and im sure the passenger mirror moved down yesterday when reversing!, it does NOT have folding mirrors tho!?).

The car has had 2 owners (One being a lease company and the second owner was the same guy who leased it for 2 years, then he bought it, so i suppose im really the second owner in all but numbers on log book).
Car has 39K with FVWSH and came with new DSG Mechatronics fittted by VW a few weeks ago under warranty, They also gave the previous owner 3 more years warranty on the replacement box, just need to notify VW this week that im the new owner and will be continuing with VW servicing (My local dealer offers the fixed price services im told!), can anyone around Kings Lynn confirm that??. ONly thing is needs is the 9 or so Stone chips on front of bumper/bonnet fixing and the lower splitter could use a re-paint due to loads of tiny stone chips, otherwise its good.

Hi, this was the 3rd one i looked at before deciding to plump for it, previously saw a Steel Greey 3dr and Met Black 5 Door, both had mileage higher and the black one was basic except DSG, saw white and loved it, I NEVER saw myself owning a white car until i saw this one, as im pictures I always thought they looked a bit "Essex" (No offense meant to any Owners from essex lol), but in the flesh it looks great.

Mods will come eventually, but first Tax is due end of month and will be needing front Tyres in next 2 months, and hopefully getting front splitter re-painted due to loads of tiny stone chips (might look at getting it film coated to prevent them for future) it also has around 9 chips on bonnet and bumoer and getting chips away to provide a quote for that.

Then when modding im looking at Milltek turbo back, twintake air filter and jabbasport re-map (I am previous customer of Jabba as they did my MK4 1.8T which ran great for the almost 5 years it was re-mapped, so they will be doing this one i think. I hear a lot about Revo and APR but im not one for going with the masses and like to support the underdog so to speak and they are a good bunch down there.

Not sure how to add it direct yet, but link below works, not the best pic on a gloomy day but will take better pics when i find time.

Nice  :happy2:

Yeah I thought about getting that 3M protection film on the front bumper & possibly lip edge of the bonnet to prevent the inevitable stone chips.

I also have a Corrado 20vT and was thinking of popping to Jabba for a re map, they're good then?

You always been into VW's or is this your first one?

Cheers  :happy2: im chuffed with it.

Yeah thinking 3m film is the way to go on it otherwise its going to get expensive living in area with lots of gravel  :scared:

Yeah, Jabba are great, this is my 6th Golf (5th GTI), my first car was a B Reg 1.3c, then got an E Reg 88' Campaign MK2 GTI 8v, then a G reg 90 spec 16v, then the mistake that was the MK3 2.0 8v or fat lump as i called it, then a MK4 1.8T Magic Black on 52 plate (For sale now!) and now this Ed30.

I live around 50 miles from Jabba and heard about them as they specialise VAG group cars and seemed to specialise in the 1.8T although now catching up with MK5's.

They did a few mods to my MK2 16v so called them for MK4 mods too.

I had the Std Stage 1 map done 3 months after i bought the 1.8T and it has ran trouble free since December 2006, only blip i had was it reverted back to std map on 1 occasion, i called them and they took a look at it and it never did it again after that. It went from 150bhp to (i think, its 5 years back i forget) around 203bhp, totally std car except for map.
They service was great and they know their Vdubs alright (they all drive them lol), im not sure if they are in same place still but they had a lounge area where you could read mags (loads to choose from) or you could play Xbox i think it was (I gave that a miss as im a Playstation man myself lol), there was also a decent cafe at a garden centre across the road where you could get some lunch (or brekkie depends on what time i suppose?).

They took it for a spin and came back and said all was fine and ready and to just take it for a quick spin down the road and back (they gave me a route) decent roads too, i think when i came back he know it was fine as i was grinning ear to ear  :happy2:

Called them a few months back to enquire about mods for Ed30 and they told me all the options available and very helpfull too.

They will be getting my business again certainly when funds permit mods.

Good string of Dub's you've had.

I myself started, as you so elegantly put, with the fat lump and stuck with it for a few years, 1.4CL, 1.8SE, GTI 8v & VR6, it was horrible in the corners but nothing a set of stiffer & lower springs couldn't sort out. I ended up tracking my GTI and had a right hoot with it. I then went more retro and bagged a Corrado G60, which I'm currently converting to a 20vT, should be good for 260bhp once finished thanks to the qpeng ecu & harness.

I might pay them a visit then if from your experiences they have been spot on. I've heard a lot more good than bad about Jabba but you'll always have your minority that will bad mouth them I guess. I understand they specialise in G60 rebuilds & 1.8T's so I guess the TFSI route is one to watch with anticipation.

I think the minority will always badmouth a company hoping the masses take note, although like on ebay 1 negative feedback in 1000 positive feedbacks does not constitute a bad company, just a customer who shouted and stamped his feet somewhat  :sad1:

Yeah they specialise in the 1.8T but when i called them asking about 2.0TSI they knew what they were on about and quoted "Realistic" figures for power upgrades and advised on which route to take. After my conversation i think my route *(eventually) will be Milltek Turbo back, Twintake filter, HPFP upgrade and then custom re-map, should liberate around 350(ish) which in a FWD car is plenty  :driver:

They also recommended DSG re-map which sounds good idea, as long as it only affects the characteristics in "S" mode as when im in "D" i tend to pootle along and would not wish for that to be compromised.
They also recommended brakes upgrade for over 300bhp and possible intercooler (Twintercooler?) as a way of getting more power.

I stopped listening at DSG tbh as thats about as far as i will ever likely take it.

Yeah your right, unfortunately those people do like to make a fuss.

Sounds promising then?  I think I'm right is saying that a few chaps who run them sort of up grades achieve figures in and around 315-330 depending on set up, but 350 sounds a hoot  :driver: Have you heard of Clive Atthowe's before? They're based in Norwich and are genuine Revo dealers, they have a Leon K1 with similar up grades you mention above and it's runs 315bhp. He knows his s#*t, really well respected, I think a few chaps on here have seen him and reported good things and being from Norwich I here nothing but good things from local VAG owners, he did a charity rolling road day for a local VW enthusiasts club and it was awesome! Website http://www.enginetuning.net/ - check it out.

I think a DSG re map would be most advisable with that much power, I think it just sharpens up gear changes and allows you to rev beyond the limiter, not too far mind  :surprised:

If you were to ask anybody on here what other up grades would you recommend in conjunction with the above, brakes would be the first thing I'm sure. The standard GTI ones are some what left to be desired, putting it politely, many people opt for the R32/S3 up grade as they bolt straight on, you benefit from a much bigger caliper and disc, GTI is 315mm & R32 is 345mm I think, fronts that is. However, as your finding out there are some very knowledgeable people on here that would be able to give more detailed advise should you want it.

When I spoke to Jabba, they said that with Exhaust, filter and re-map you could expect 315-330hp (330bhp max due to limitations of Fuel pump) and with HPFP and intercooler nearer 350hp (although i heard some companies quoting 365-375bhp for similar mods) optimistic maybe?.

Anyhoo i think as stated, i will go filter/exhaust/engine remap and dsg re-map and be happy with whatever i get be it 315 or 350 lol.

I have heard of Clives yes and know a few people that went there and were happy, but im happy with Jabba and as stated i dont follow the masses with Revo or APR etc (I am a Wolf not a sheep lol), im sure they are great but im sure I will be happy with Jabba again.

Full research to be carried out nearer the time when i want to make mods, for time being its getting tidied up (booked into bodyshop in 2 weeks to have front splitter painted and the scuff on both the front bumper and rear bumper fixed, once thats done its stone chip repair time and then the 3M (or other manufacturer etc) Film time to prevent further damages.

Just spoke to VW this morning about the Ed30 Number plaque as previous owner did not know anything about it and never asked or received anything from VW.

They said it has been passed to the Lady who has dealt with this in past (Jenny) and she will call me later in week with the details of my build date and Build number and hopefully get my plaque sent out (Here's hoping!).

Ok, yeah I suppose with those added mods then yes, you'll probably hit that sort of figure.

I wasn't trying to convince you to go Revo and I admire your commitment to not follow the norm, but as you know living fairly rural there isn't many 'good' tuners to chose from and thought if Jabba doesn't work out then try Clive's. I thought you may of heard of him being fairly local to Norwich. I'm very keen to see what Jabba come up with though, they built a good reputation on the 20vT platform so fingers crossed for the TFSI.

Let us know how much the stone chips cost to repair and the 3M protection film or equivalent as they have this habit round here of doing crap road surface repairs which leave loads of perfectly sized stones that mess the paint work up

I'll be chasing up the plaque at Robinsons VW on Friday as I to have no plaque, hopefully the previous owner didn't request it.

You should post some piccy's in the readers ride section, I imagine your candy Ed30 will go down very well indeed. White looks awesome, I had a Scirocco 140PS TDI from new in white, looked lush all cleaned up in that colour.

Ive used Jabba for my MK4 diesel and on my Edition 30. I had the car remapped by Jabba when the rumour was that the dsg box can only cope with 350nm of torque, once it was realised it can cope with more i couldnt be bothered to drive back to Peterborough so i went to Clive's and had Revo. Both companies i recommend, with either you cant go wrong.  :happy2:

Hello from another new Edition 30 owner and forum member!

Your car sounds great; I was looking for a white Edition 30 and looked at a White non Edition 30 before settling for my Reflex Silver Edition 30 last week. I bought it from Wolsey VW just outside of Ipswich.  I think the lighter colours, white, silver and red really define the shape of the car and the grille, wheels and painted lower body items differentiate from the (still fantastic) lower powered GTi brethren!  Yours has almost every extra known to man - you've certainly got a goodie there.  The forum pages are becoming my first go-to site when I have the time to browse the tinternet.  Can't believe how many wonderfully knowledgeable and helpful owners there are out there.
Good luck

ONce car tax and front tyres paid for will start saving for next years service and then its a re-map, Milltek, Twintake and possibly HPFP in one go, hopefully may/june next year, happy to live with it std for now.

Yours sounds like a nice one, i never looked at a silver one as when i was looking there did not appear to be any in my price range lol, except for a heavily modded one.

Just bumped into one of our neighbours in town, nice chap, usual formalities exchanged, he says he better get off as he needs to catch the bus home as his car is in for service, so i said im going home now you can have a lift if you like (He lives in the house opposite). He gets in  and we set off, im pootling along on the A road at 50 in traffic (60 limit area) and he says "is this quick?", i said its pretty nippy and he said lets get past these dawdlers then, so into S on the DSG and nail the throttle, past 3 cars in a flash and he says, i like this, might get the wife one as they do an auto!!, drop him off and his wife comes out and has a look, what do you reckon he says, do you fancy one of these in auto, she says yes i like it, is it quick?, turns out they have been looking for a small auto thats quick to "get past the older folks doddering along the bypass" she then says shall i call VW and see if they have any?.
So maybe my neighbours are the market for a Dealership Ed30 now lol.

Maybe another one converted to Ed30 owners club. He also asked me to take him for a spin when its modified to see how quick it is!?

P.S. my neighbours are 70 and 72, who knew they were still petrol heads LMAO, even funnier as they said "older folks doddering along the bypass" ROLFMSO

Just noticed a switch on my car that i did not know about, after reading the manual it turns out the car is also fitted with the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), have read instructions and will be checking the tyres later today and setting the thing as i think i have a slow puncture on OSF tyre

My plaque not arrived yet either, she said Monday or Tuesday and its wednesday now :indifferent:, good news my V5 came back tho, so now i can get the car taxed at end of month and wont have to leave it in the garage for a few days  :happy2:

Cheers mate, i played round with by using a sticky pad and tried centre console (liked it), passenger door (would never see it), on base of armrest (again never see it) and on drivers door (preferred choice).

Just glad VW got it sorted for me and pretty quickly too, although they told me it was going to be number 2236 and then 2235 arrived, makes me wonder if numbers are just randomly selected as i know another guy with an 08 plate with Same April build date and his is 2078 i think?, either that or a hell of a lot of cars registsred in April  :signLOL:
