If its the 1.8T engine you'd be better asking on a mk4 golf forum but from my ownership they like to go through MAF's, DV's (nothing changes there) and there is about a mile of vacuum hosing around the engine that likes to leak and cause boost loss.

IMO the 2.0T is a much better engine and you'd be better off finding one with that engine.

Plus it sounds pants.  No 4 cylinder sounds great but again the 2.0T does sound much better than the 1.8T.

Well put, the 1.8T engine isn't great at all, from what I've heard the radiator fans require a resistor at some point? May just be the mk4 golfs tho  :happy2:

The 1.8t is a superb engine and only suffers from minor issues that are pretty identicle to the problems on the newer 2.0t. And how anyone can say the TFSI engine in the MK5 can sound better than anything but a tank are  :stupid:

It sounds better at idle certainly but on the move?  Had as much note (and personality) as a hairdryer.

On idle they sound dog, when moving I love the sound of my car

It's not the engine that sounds better on the MK5, it's the induction and exhaust. But thats easily bettered on both anyway......

Not sure where this thread is going anymore?

To the OP, have our replies been useful so far?

The 1.8t engine is fantastic, tried and tested in many a vag, never had any bother with mine doing 30000 miles a year, and as said the induction and exhaust are what make the sound, the mk4 golf gti sounded pants stock but my stock lcr sounded great, can't believe some of these posts to be honest, madness
