Title: Brake Disc and Pad advice
Post by: Rob GTI on October 18, 2011, 11:49:16 pm: I'm looking to get some new pads and discs (standard) for my motor. The main dealer wants an arm and a leg for OEM stuff, so I want to get something equivalent. Is there a standard I should be looking for when to ensure they meet the specifications of OEM. I know I can buy cheaper than OEM in loads of places but don't want poor performance, sensors not working, clunking pads, or worst of all brake squeal.

Thats my point, I go to that website and notice that there are several different makes of pad for my car at various prices points. Some nearly a third as much as OEM some only 10% cheaper than OEM.

I know you can buy the trusted makes but I'm sure I had a conversation with a motor factors parts guy a while ago who said that despite buying a well known brand you are not neccisarily getting OEM equivalent as they manufacture different grades of pad. Therefore what is the minimum standard to look out for kinda like a kite mark manufacured in accordance with standard XXX etc??

Spoke to my local garage too who said to be careful with eurocarparts as can sell cheap rubbish, however he said that pagid were good.

Plus they have 25% off codes for discs and pads, just search google :happy2:

Where from? Europarts?

How do they perform? Any squeal / noise? Gone rusty?

Post by: skard on October 20, 2011, 11:05:51 pm: I put Pagid discs and pads from ECP on my mrs' car a few months back and they have been superb - albeit they don't require the same stopping power as a GTI! Using the discounts make them good value.

Failing that, if you just want OEM spec ring up your local Bosch garage for a price. I got all round discs and pads for my TDI for £160, pretty much the exact same parts were £330 from the dealer.

OEM stuff's like a cuddle blanket and its good to use for all the right reasons but precision engineered in Germany and hand finished on the thigh of a cuban virgin its not.....

OEM pads are not generally made by ATE although some might be, theres only about 6 ACTUAL pad manufacturers on the planet but the likes of Pagid/Mintex/Textar are all TMD group.

OEM pads with the different end letter show different applications, H at the end of a part number tends to be Ferodo, looking at the part numbers ferodo tends to find its way onto the higher end stuff as well as Galfer. Ferodo OEM stuff is pretty good its the same mix as the ferodo premier range which just about copes fast road.

ATE is also used on OEM, there requirement is so large they have a range of manufacturers all supplying on tender on a week or monthly basis.

Brembo aftermarket stuff is generally made in the EU but again some in Asia

Therefoer in the effort of saving a few £££I can find Pagid pads @ £48 and ATE @ £80 from Euro car parts. The OEM dealers want £100. What difference if any is there between these 3 apart from price?

Post by: DaveB@Vagbremtechnic on October 21, 2011, 04:35:07 pm: ECP have purchased the rights to the Pagid branding for a period of three years about 18 months ago, they are the exclusive reseller of non race and psort pads in the uk.

They are able to also produce some of their own pads in the far east and allegedly sell them here branded pagid, only for some pad shapes though.

Stay clear of Pagid pads in a baby light blue box and buy the darker blue ones.

You will see in ECP everything from Ice Scrapers to Air fresheners branded Pagid, bit of a shame really.

For fast road, cant think of a reason not to fit DS2500 just stay off track with them
