Title: Slight gearbox whine - Manual GTI
Post by: john87 on October 20, 2011, 08:47:24 am
Since the GTI is so smooth on the road, particularly on some nice new stretches of motorway near where I stay, I'm noticing a very slight whine particularly in 4th gear which sounds like the 1st gear whine which accompanies many cars. Now I have a habit of being over-sensitive to these sort of noises  :stupid: but if anyone can agree with me that this is normal, or suggest that it might be something to do with low gearbox oil, etc. The gearbox shifts great and has only done 30k, any input appreciated folks!

Are you sure it isn't a wheel bearing?  Mine went on a rear wheel and sounded like a whine at motorway speeds.  Press the clutch in and see if its still making the sound

As above.
Jack the car up and with the suspect wheel off the floor, hold the wheel about the 10 & 2 position then wobble it to see if there is play in the bearing.

I love the slight sound of a gearbox whine. I've heard mine (only in low gears when moving relatively slowly) ever since full engine mounts were installed and more engine bay soundz get transmitted. It's good to hear what's going on - But obviously not to everyone's taste. I hate quiet cars which are like marshmallow caccoons - Most normal people like them.

You want to try sitting in my cabin with the supercharger 3 inches away from your back.

I love the noise of a supercharger.

Other half used to have a supercharged mini cooper S, on a hot summers day it was such an great car to thrash the life out of, I can still hear the supercharger noise now.  Don't miss 230 miles to £60 of petrol though :signLOL:

Thanks for the input guys, its definitely not a wheel bearing, and is more prominent when on the overrun (i.e. slowing down in gear) I guess just coming from a diesel where the sound of the engine ironed out all these little noises
