I have just plugged my iPad into the home computer and it has updated the software to something like v10. It is the first time I have linked it to iTunes for a couple of months.
All seemed to be going ok until I notice that a lot of the apps/links to websites on the iPad have disappeared. These are free apps I have downloaded straight from the ipad from app store over the last 8 months.
The ipad did a full restore and I got back all my music /calendars/contacts/phots etc but not the apps
Help - what have I done wrong ????

Have they been backed up to your iTunes? In which case you should be able to just redownload them. With iOS5 you can redownload previously purchased apps, so worse-case scenario, just download it again.

thanks - I have just clicked on 'downloads' in iTunes still witht he iPad plugged in and it has found my 41 apps and says it is downloading them. I assume it means it is downloading to the iPad. I expect I will have to download them into folders again on the iPad.
I have only ever plugged the Ipad in and updated the software. I have never done anything else in itunes and do not find it all that intuitive.
5 mins of downloading to go so will keep you posted
Anything else I need to do or know ?
thanks

I've always hated iTunes. The version for windows is horrendously written. Perhaps as an incentive for people to buy macs?
Up until iOS5, you should have been syncing with iTunes regularly - it backs up all your programs. This means you can delete an app off your iPad and then put it back on at a later date. Think of iTunes as the main computer with all your music and the iPad like an mp3 player which has only a portion of it.
With iOS5, your data can be backed up to iCloud and iTunes app keeps a record of all of your purchases so you can always redownload it again if you need to.

just completed the download of all my apps and sync'd them but still missing a load of them.
I go into the itunes store and look at my purchase history and things such as angry birds apps are listed but are not on my ipad.
I can see them all on the history but not sure now how to get them back onto the iPad
sorry for the daft questions

You should be able to just redownload them. Click on the iTunes store on the left, then go to the right and click on Purchased. You should now get Music, Apps and Books buttons at the top of the screen, redownload them and resync to iPad.
I'm surprised one of the Apple Fanbois or even the FAG haven't chipped in yet.

Yes, just redoenload them, it's free, did the same on my 4s, as I don't o a back up first. When I upgraded my iPad I made sure I backed it up first and all is good.

thanks guys
this new ios 5 or whatever is awful
you cannot see the webpages you have open graphically anymore - a feature I loved, every calendar entry has now appeared twice (my wife uses calendar a lot and is mighty pissed off !!!)
it keeps on asking to upload to icloud which is a pain.
and the dam thing will not sync now so have to reboot my PC
all in all a major pain inthe arse today but thanks for your help - just a matter of trial and error but I just want to plug and play as opposed spend hours trying to work the dam thing.

Yeah I've had problems with trying to get my 4S to sync after the initial sync when you connect it.
-
I seem to be able to sync my 4S and iPad 1 over wifi ok.
-
Maybe that's the problem. I keep doing it the old fashioned way. With a cable!
-
I don't have a problem doing my 4S or iPad 1 (Wifi only) using the Cable.

.
If your re-installed Apps are showing in the 'mothership' iTunes but not on your iPad (I assume it's an iPad 2), then Shutdown and then Restart your iPad: Hold down the off switch until you see a red bar option to close down. Leave the iPad off for a dozen seconds or so, and then switch it on again. According to what's loaded on your iPad it will influence how long things take. On restarting you should first see a silver Apple logo in portrait display.
It's more reliable to use the USB cable connection.

I have an iPad 1 and not tried to resync since the initial issues.
I have now worked out how to get all of my missing apps back thanks.
The biggest problem is with the calendar app we use. Every entry has appeared twice. One entry has a coloured circle next to it indicating the entry is on the iPad and the second entry has another coloured circle indicating it is on my pc.
Is it possible to plug the iPad back in to my pc and do a mass deletion of one of these entries and if so, which ones do I want to clear. My wife uses calendar extensively so do not want to upset her even more
Thanks all for your help

This is a known fault, apple are working on it.
