Title: Car sounds like a diesel?

Hi all, from cold the car sounds fine, after a few miles driving tho it really does sound like a diesel with the diesel knocking sound. It seems to run ok, just had oil, filter and cambelt done but no improvement, any ideas?

Timing out after cam belt change? Incorrectly tensioned or faulty pulley?

Any logged fault codes?

How old is it & is it on the AXX engine code by any chance?.

Are you getting much better mpg and a smug grin every time you pass a fuel station? Maybe they swapped it during the service for an actual diesel? :laugh:

Seriously, as mentioned timing could be out, tbh the T Fsi sounds very diesel-ish (until its ticking over next to a soot chucker).

yeah TFSIs sound like diesels. i think it's the combo of the turbo and the injection system.

i was getting a lift home from an Audi garage in a 1.4T and i asked him if that was a diesel, and when i bought my 2.0T i noticed at traffic lights and things (i.e. at idle) it sounds very diesel-ish. very similar to my parents' W221 S320 CDI actually. i don't think it's anything to be concerned about.

Hi all, it made the noise before I had the cambelt done, I know what you mean about the noise they make as this is the second mk5 Gti I've owned, not the quietest of engines :)
My engine sounds normal and quiet on startup but then the proper diesel knocking starts after a bit.
Spoke to a mate who knows his stuff who thought it might be the fuel pump as they are high pressure jobs like the diesels but I'm not sure as the knocking gets faster as you rev.
Just worried the engine might fall apart :(
