Title: Easy way of finding out if my car has been mapped?
Post by: billy187 on October 25, 2011, 05:14:01 pm
Had my GTI a while now and it seems to go very well, and there is a noticeable difference between this and a mates GTI.

Mods wise it is standard.

Is there any way of being able to tell if it has been mapped?

Either get the car on a dyno or log the boost using vcds. In both instances the values will be higher than standard if mapped.

Ignorance is no defense in the court of law or indeed if it means insurance companies paying out.

Exactly mate.. Would love to know how anyone would stand with this (if an insurance company actually went to the trouble of somehow checking that is)?

Say customer X is a 55 year old women, who has just bought herself a used 6 year old Golf GTI from her local used car dealer. The car has had 6 previous owners and as far as the local car garage is concerned is standard, besides which, customer X wouldn't know what a remap was if it slapped her in the face. She then writes her car off by running in the back of another car and her insurance company assess her car and discovers that it was remapped 3 years ago..
Should they pay out?

I'm not saying that peeps who have modded their car should not declare it to their insurance company, as that is just daft. But if you have bought a car of any make and age, should you then take it to your local garage to get them to give it a full diagnostic check, followed by checking every component to make sure they are all OEM???

I read a stat a few months back that not one insurance payout has been rejected in the uk due to a discovered remap!

Can quite believe it too mate..

Let's not kid ourselves, most on this forums aren't daft enough to think it's ok to drive around in heavily modded cars with the attitude that "it'll be alright" ... But to start going down the path of having to check whether the 2nd hand car you have just bought has been previously mapped just in case your insurance company could refuse to payout, is a bit far fetched IMO. After all, most of the general public wouldn't know what an ECU was, let along a software remap..  :rolleye:

Is that right ? I am really surprised to hear this.  Not long ago I heared about a chap who had a crash in a previously mapped 2.0 A3 TFSI.  Even though the car had a stock map, the flash counter showed multiple counts and the Insurance company were trying to escape the claim.  He was paid out in the end as the Standard map 'was' on at the time of the accident.

Would the previous owner, however far back, leave the map on?..My nephew removed it from his Polo GTI before sale and if mine was,nt stolen it was a 10 second job to remove the map.

I think sky insurance gave me an extra premium of £50 for stage 1, but they're mod friendly.
