Title: Diesel Edition 30 WTF
Post by: Tinytim on October 29, 2011, 01:20:09 pm
Had a test drive in an Edition 30 and thee salesman is giving it his hardest sell. Comes out with
"you'll save loads of money with this car as it's very economical being a diesel"

I could not believe what bullsh1t I was hearing.
I went silent for a while then repeated "diesel?"
He replied "Yes Diesel"

I then had to tell him it was a petrol.
He acted all surprised and he was the one driving it!

Amazing. Not sure what's worse, if he was trying to fool me or whether he was genuinely clueless.

To a lot of people if you can hear the engine, its a diesel.  The TFSI clatter doesn't help..

Still, no excuse for a salesman.   :signLOL:

This lead to the question of what type of fuel he was filling it up with...  :scared:

Just goes to show a lot of the supposed experts who work in the motor trade are clueless!

He knew it was 230bhp, made a real point of telling me that, and that it wasn't the standard Gti it is a special edition model.

Would have been interesting if he'd gone to stick some fuel in for the test drive.
I am surprised he didnt. When he started the car the trip computer said 10 miles till empty, he said don't worry that will be fine. Got back and it was showing 5. Pretty risky.

Also wasn't aware there were paddles to change gear on the steering wheel.

End result is sale lost. Next time he should do his homework about the cars he's selling.

I had a salesman at a nearby VW tell me highline was available only on the Passat. Some of them don't know much about it.

Whenever I go in my local to the parts desk some nobber on the service desk always pipes up that I can't get what I'm asking for. Last time was a keyfob badge "you can't buy them separate, have to get a whole new key". Love it when I go back 2 days later to collect my new badges!

The exact same thing happened to me!

When I used to have a Mk 4 R32 I rang up to book it in for a service and they asked what car it was.  When I said it was an R32 the reply was "is that a Golf?". :fighting:

Chatting to a Skoda dealer a while back and he didn't have a clue that the Fabia vRS had a 7 speed DSG and that it was a dry clutch.  OK perhaps a bit technical but he was arguing......!

Had a similar thing looking at a Honda S2000 years back, think I got the elder salesman who was usually tasked with selling 'Jazzes' to white haired old biddies.
He cacked himself on the test drive when the VTEC took off, even with my Captain Slow type pedalling, not sure he had a clue about that car, I was telling him facts about his product.

that's disgraceful. it's one of my pet peeves too! i've seen adverts of cars with the wrong interiors and stuff and there's no excuse! you don't go to the doctor and expect to know more about the condition than they do, so why do you go into a [insert manufacturer name] dealership and know more about the cars than the salesman? more than one salesman has lost a sale from me for not knowing his product. if they don't know basic questions what else don't they know? condition of the car? last service? if it's written off?

I was looking at Vauxhall Insignias on AutoTrader some time ago and put petrol in the fuel type dropdown box and 2.0 in the engine one. This was back when they were quite new and you'd get about 30 or so results, BUT 27 of those were 2.0CDTI models!

I have to add some balance here, although I totally agree with you guys. They are salesman, they're good at selling products and it happens to be a car. Yes they should know about it but trust me, they do sell cars. Most people that go there aren't petrol heads so the conversation won't get too deep.
