Title: Chuffed with MPG :D
Post by: john87 on October 31, 2011, 10:02:34 am
On a recent run from central Scotland to Alton Towers and back, I achieved 396 miles on a full tank of shell 95 RON which I was pretty happy with for a GTI  :happy2:

I usually run her on tesco 99 or vpower if I get the chance, but thought I'd give it a try since I'd be sitting at 70 most of the way.

What's your best full tank range, fellow GTI owners?

not a GTI owner but same engine and similar car

380 miles to a tank, about half of which was motorway driving. that was running on V-Power, which i think gives me better fuel economy than Momentum 99

Crewe to Inverness (around 400miles) easy did it on one tank (showing 80miles left when I arrived). Bog standard GTI sat at 70mph on the motorways and 50-60 on the single carriageways, Driver & 1 passenger running on 95RON Unleaded. display was showing around 42mpg.

Its not the car, its how you drive it  :driver:

the whole point of VW putting the FSi technology in these engines is to SAVE fuel - so when your not WOT everywhere, they are actually quite good.

i don't think my engine would ever achieve 480mi from a single tank at 70mph

i often do economy runs just to see what the maximum i could get is - i think 400mi is the absolute limit

I was sitting at 70mph on the satnav pretty much all the way (75 on speedo  ) and think the display was showing ~38mpg. My friend who was following in his integra type-r managed 320 before the fuel light came on  blah blah vtec custom ecu blah blah...

Yeah please don't, I punish myself enough considering my last car was a mapped civic 2.2 ctdi with 194bhp and ~49mpg

400 miles is great result, the best i got was 600 km but I drive 20% city and rest motorway hence would have been better slightly....

The TFSI engine is more suited to long journeys as it is only when it has been given chance to get up to temperature that it switches to homogenous (lean burn) mode. IIRC.

That would make sense, as my usual 5 mile journey to work results in, at best, 33-35mpg driving at a leisurely pace

Best I've achieved was 400 miles. More normally get 280ish. I actually find Tesco Momentum gives far better economy than V Power.

Always get 40mpg on my 58 mile commute in the mornings, even on 95 RON, always seems to be lower on the way home  :driver:

I drove from Kent (Sevenoaks) to Norfolk for a week, drove round that week and back to Kent which was also 400 miles on 1 tank and pulled into petrol station by my house to put more in when i got back. With me (obviously) the girlfriend, a boot full of stuff (mostly hers i must add) and some bits on the backseats. I was very surprised. Also about 70 mph motorway and normal driving around the towns with a few blips to scrare the girlfriends sister when she jumped in (she got car sick ) haha :star:

Crikey, I'm surprised you manage to get anywhere near that MPG from such a short run! My computer reports about 26mpg after 5 miles, and that's if I'm lucky! I'll have to blame my lead foot.

527 miles! out of an ED30

64 ish miles per day on the M1 through the road works from Junc9 to Junc14, 50 mph speed restrictions and a short journey to get on the motorway, plus a short journey to get to work once off it. Tank lasted for 8 days.

It's VERY difficult to drive like that all the time

Derv power for the Win  :P

I guess doing a 72 mile round trip commute, Diesel was my only option really....but the 170 DPF shifts too best of both worlds. :driver:
