Hi, I have had this a few times, and whilst I fully recommend getting a scan done (I'm sure there will be someone with VCDS near you happy to help), it has never turned out to be anything on mine, in fact nothing has come up on scans after the light has gone out (3 starts on the ignition tends to clear the light). I put it down to the sensor playing up due to not sensing the correct mixture.

Thanks,
I have been doing a lot of short trips (5miles) lately for a month due to change of work and not using much at weekend , could this have any bearing on fault

Mine had this last week and the dealer plugged it in and said it's usually the black valve thing at the front of the engine with small hoses going into it (can't remember the name of it), they said it's common
they reset the codes and it hasn't come back on since?
I'd just filled my tank with optimax <10 mins before so thought i might have a bad batch, might have been a coincidence
-
Well bugger me - my light has come on again tonight :sad1: i'm getting it taken to the dealers again tommorow to see what shows up now (more money to spend before xmas)

No-one near to you with a vcds cable?

Mine is still on, still nothing noticeable wrong with car, booked in at dealers Monday £85 for a scan

dealer reset the light a couple of weeks ago and said if it came back on he'd know which part was faulty (black thing at front of engine with pipes going into it) - he'll confirm this and order part (i hope)

blimey - only took local dealers 5 mins to check and reset mine :surprised:
i'll let you know what they say tommorow

Don't let them charge you a full hour for the scan, when I spoke to my local VW dealer it was £45+vat for half hour.
Surely a local garage or someone with VCDS would be better than shelling out £85!

I Dont Know anybody local who can do it, local garage cant read the codes or something like that. The dealer never mentioned anything about half hour rates just that it would be £85 to diagnose fault

Just read that post, did you sort yours?
i'm dropping mine off at Hudds VW - spoke to Dougie last time and he seems to know what the problem will be - which indy did you use (p ellam, ivs?)
I changed my DV to the new piston tyre a couple of days before i got the light for the 1st time - do you think it's connected?
-
I used Peter Ellam. I don't think they know too much about the 2.0T engine to be honest. They changed the N80 (at a cost of £105) and the light came back on 2 days later. They then had the car for another hour but suggested they'd need it for a further half day to determine what was wrong. I asked if they had checked the diverter valve and they hadn't. I then had to show them where it is on a K03 car!
I've got a new DV coming tomorrow so hopefully that will sort it. If not I'll possibly drop it in for IVS to have a look at.
What car you driving btw?

Ok thanks

I'm driving an ED30
went into VW today for the fault codes reading - came up same as last time
They said it could be 1 of 2 things so will change the cheapest first, either charcoal canister (£137 fitted) or the valve (can't remember how much that was but they said it was a longer job so labour would be a lot more)
Booked in for next friday so we'll see what happens :sad1:
-
The valve is a £25 part and 30 minutes to fit.
I'm driving a black 5 door with Detroits if you see me around!

well the valve should have been cheaper than the canister then? bet they end up replacing that as well so i get charged for a canister which wasn't needed
Mine's a red 3 door, usually driven on back of old ICI, Zeneca, or whatever it was called since (dalton green lane) and up Bradley road into Elland :happy2:
-
I work on Bradley Road :happy2:

I'll keep an eye out - 6.30am (ish) and 5.00pm (unless i'm working 2 hours o/t) :happy2:

I'm now a victim of the exhaust emission light and similarly have been doing much shorter journeys due to work. Car appears to be running completely fine, absolutely no change from normal.
I can't see anyone on the list but does anyone know about someone with VCDS in the Glasgow area? I'd really appreciate the help.

iirc rubber toe is from Glasgow and I'm guessing should have one.
-
Wonder if this problem is down to short trips - maybe by not running optimum temps for several miles it causes the problem?

Thanks for that, I've dropped him a PM.
Re. short distances, I've done a couple of 30 min runs on the motorway and a couple of blasts just to give it time to warm up. Can the light go off after a while? Is it safe to keep driving given that I notice absolutely no difference?

As long as the light is orange/ amber and NOT red then it is still safe to drive
I had my light reset the other week and it took 50 miles before it came back on - it wouldn't go out on its own :(
mine also feels no different to before
-
The way that i got rid of it was to start the car, then turn it off and start it again. Do it about 3 times and the light goes out.
Had mine on VCDS today (many thanks to vwrascal - Dan, top guy :happy2:), and nothing popped up at all about the lambda sensor - which is what that light normally means, so wouldnt worry too much about it - unless red light as said above.

Didn't work on mine

Where in Northumberland are you?

Same for me so far, not sure if it might reset after the same period as the trip computer after a couple of hours?
-

Ashington, 30 minutes north of newcastle
Light is still on , still nothing obviously wrong with car ,in at dealers tomorrow for bad news  or good news will post the outcome
-
Had the car in dealers today '' carried out GFF, fault found on knock sensor, carried out test plans and updates and reset as required, customer to monitor ''
so light is out now but they don't seem confident that its going to stay out with the comment ''customer to monitor'' :scared: hopefully it will
-
I was speaking to my Mother yesterday. She had a similar problem with her 09 Golf GTD. The fault light was cleared twice and on each occasion she was told it was nothing to worry about. No parts were replaced, and it hasn't returned since. She was told it was a frequent problem.
-
Hopefully it stays out for you mate.
I'm going to drop into a local independent place on Friday so I'll let you know what comes back from that.
-

This is an interesting point. The garage looked at my car last Wednesday and reset the fault code. At the time it was filled with Sainsburys Premium. It has stayed out until today when it came on shortly after putting £30 of Tesco Momentum in. I'm also fairly confident it came on at first after I started to regularly use Momentum.
-
Ha - a quick Google -

Particularly this one -

The more I think about the more my problems correlate with my use of Tesco Momentum.

I always use V Power, never used supermarket fuel in any car for about 5years

Regardless, is does suggest that fuel can be a factor to consider.

Yes I agree , previous owners of my car could have been using supermarket fuel, I have only had it 4 months. and it was the knock sensor that had a fault, is the knock sensor the thing that changes timing or something when different fuel is used,
-
Just as an update on mine, I got 'EVAP Emission Control System Incorrect Flow - P0441-002 Lower Limit Exceeded'.
Went to Deutschtek in Glasgow and it was a tenner for readout and reset. He told me it was nothing to worry about and to pop in for an investigation if it does return.
First time I've been in there but was very impressed with their knowledge and will consider a service there.
-
Well i had my new charcoal cannister fitted today (£121) so i'll see if the light reapears in the next 50 miles or so - hope not
-
It might have already been mentioned on this thread, it's certainly been discussed on the forum before. If you 'brim' the tank full when filling up it can cause a fault requiring a new charcoal canister. :happy2:

Really?
Think the last top up (just before light started coming on) i only put £20-£30 in as i don't like that station but i was nearly empty and across the road

I dealt with Dougie at Hudds VW - he overlooks the other mechanics and is a good guy to deal with :happy2:
Just put another £40 of VPower in this morning - hope the light doesn't come back on again
-
Any joy with your fix Robby? My light is back on (for a 4th time I think), so I think my next port of call is the charcoal canister.
-
Mine has stayed off, so it was the knock sensor ,
-
I've ordered a replacement Charcoal Canister from Huddersfield VW. Cost £87 so I'll fit it this weekend and keep my fingers crossed!
-
Well since the canister was replaced last friday i've done 70 miles and the light still hasn't come back on - it was coming on after 50 miles before
Finger crossed the problem is solved :jumpmove:
