Title: ** Miglior Detailing ltd ** On-going Thread - Winter protection! 5 german cars
Post by: JPC on April 08, 2009, 03:37:04 pm
Hi guys, well ill start off with a bmw 1 series i had in for an enhance and protect detail.

The car has 106k miles on the clock and was looking really shabby.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2Fmk5thread%2FIMG_0842w.jpg&hash=a5c4e92c469b89248c41dee3dcfa0013fd909de9)

The owner brought it in because he was concerned about how rough the paint felt on the bonnet and all down one side. he said it felt like sandpaper. Before i saw the car i presumed it will be full of tree sap but i was wrong. It looked like all the clear coat was coming off.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2Fmk5thread%2FIMG_0856w.jpg&hash=9470cd7ce8f98b8700cfaee95673b47b0f1dd375)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2Fmk5thread%2FIMG_0859w.jpg&hash=8b52d0c971ac1594b11c5f190400cc59f62a61dd)

I washed the car and couldnt believe how rough it was! it really was awful. after washing it gave me a better idea of what i was looking it. it looked like some sort of industrial overspray, like some form of glue maybe?

i tested a small bit of the bonnet with Megs Pro Mild clay. magic, it was bringing it off. I still treaded carefully, because it was quite scratchy. this car took about 2 hours just to clay because of this. sometimes i needed to step up to Agressive clay, and this along with what i was removing, left some slight maring.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2Fmk5thread%2FIMG_0861w.jpg&hash=0c8b65a09e51b82c4b9bd90a5684b732972ca80d)

So after i had finished claying i quickly went round the car with menz final finish. this really brought the clarity back to the paint. it got rid of 90% of the swirls, although there were still some pretty hefty marks remaining, but this wasnt booked in for a full correction.

the car was looking so much better now, it had shaved 80k miles off it!

now i moved onto a wipe down with IPA and then two coats of Z5 and a spritz of z8 afterwards.

the owner was absolutely delighted and couldnt believe how clean his car was.

excellent stuff  :happy2: :happy2:

so is there a dramatic difference between the mild and aggressive clay then? at which point did you decided to change between the two?
Title: Re: Miglior Detailing: Non-Vag Work! :)
Post by: JPC on April 08, 2009, 03:47:44 pm
well....you see some coloured defects in the overspray? those ring type arrangements?

well they seemed to be the most stubborn ones, i did what i could with the mild clay. then switched to the aggressive stuff to get the rest out.

I could have probably got it all out with the green clay, with elbow grease, but that goes against what clay is about. it shouldnt need elbow grease. ive always found a less passes with a more aggressive clay is better than loads of rubbing with a mild clay

What colour's the more aggressive clay? Grey? I used sonus green on my car once and it wasn't shifting anything. Switched to the clay I got with meg's smooth surface and the results were more satisfactory.

When you went round with final finish, how long did you spend on a, say, 2ftx2ft section? I think I spent around 5 mins per section like that. Just wondered whether it had been worth it or should I have used it for a shorter period of time?

Would have loved to have seen more finished pics but that looks  :happy2:

with regards to the clay, the aggressive one is red. the mild is light green.
they are from the megs professional range, so wont find them in halfords.

the final finish was only used to bring the clarity of the paint and colour back. It wasnt meant for huge correction work, even though it did quite a lot.

i probably worked on a 3 x 2 area and spent probably 2-3 minutes on each section.

this is with a rotary though. not so much pressure and about reaching maybe 2000rpm??

there you go mate.

I need to step up with my photography skills seriously.

I would also like to get more shots which are a good comparison from before and after.

But when you trying to cram a 16 hour detail (not in this case) into 12 hours, its quite hard to dedicate much time to photos!

sometimes just throwing the image into photoshop etc can stop the image bleeds, using gamma correction you can up the blacks and reduce the whites..might compromise the honesty of a photo though

yep true, id rather learn how to use the camera more so, than use photoshop.

Its just how the car was parked with the unit door behind, letting the light in.

and gamma what?! ive used the shadow function before but it makes the pics look noisey so i avoid it, and normally delete crap photos

i would destroy you with waffle if i attempted to explain gamma properties so gunna aim you here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma_correction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma_correction)

heavy reading but think of it as a natural image correction by adjusting hue's in blocks of red/green/blue's in defined areas

also the new cannon is coming out, meaning the EOS 450d will be chetting cheaper

On your detailing world thread you mention iron filings along with tar on the BMW J .Is that common?  Where do these come from?  :ashamed:

I had loads on my old van and I couldn't work out where they had possibly come from!
Title: Re: Miglior Detailing: Non-Vag Work! :)
Post by: JPC on March 16, 2010, 07:18:53 pm
No nothing to do with the car. It's probable that the car had been parked near to a site etc. Maybe there was some steelwork being cut
somewhere? That can land as dust then deposit rust around it.
Title: Re: Miglior Detailing: Non-Vag Work! :)
Post by: Greeners on March 16, 2010, 07:48:18 pm
A lot of new cars travel from the docks by rail and they can be left in sidings for a while getting cained by passing trains, this is normally where the 'Iron Filings' come from!  :happy2:

Hello, and welcome along to another Miglior write up! We're looking at the very capable Renault Sport Clio 200. This has been rated as one of the best front wheel drive hot hatches going.
The car is a matter of months old, but it was already showing some swirling. The dealers charged my customer for their diamondbrite sealant, this costs about £400 and for that, you get next to no protection. Actually, what am I being kind for? There was no evidence of protection whatsoever. Aside from that, included in the price is, buffer trails, swirl marks and a lot of marring.

Summary of the work carried out:

- Perform enhancement detail to remove buffer trails/dull looking paint
- Full wheel & Arch Detail
- Swap grey centre caps with black ones
- Protect the car for the winter.

Obviously, the car has been used for a few months, but you would expect some form of protection on the car even after a few months. With the car holding on to water and how dirt had stuck to the car, it’s fair to say the dealer applied sealant is of no benefit in any terms.

Here is the car on arrival.

Edit:

Just read the detail link, and another fine result and turn-round.  I like the ramp.

Bit more than that. They are about 1700 delivered maybe less if your blagging them. You wanna single phase 3t one tho with locks etc that's CE approved.

yeah i know how much they are Jay dealer i worked for has the bigger version of yours and its a great bit of kit. You can get the ones you wind up your self on a crank handle or even the ones with a manual pump but for ease you can beat the one you have

Hello, and welcome along to another Miglior write up!

Under the spotlight today is an Aston martin DB9 in Tungsten Silver. Now, this car is 4 years old with just short of 20k miles on the clock. The owner of this car used this car whatever the circumstances, it’s been a second car but it has done its fair share of touring around Europe. After 4 years of this, it’s bound to need an overhaul. After looking for a detailer in Lancashire the owner quickly called and booked the car in.

Summary of the work carried out:

- Full Diamond Cut Refurb of all Alloy wheels.
- Perform enhancement detail to remove buffer trails/dull looking paint
- Full wheel & Arch Detail
- Perform deep interior detail paying close attention to the leather
- Protect the car for the winter.
- Degrease Engine bay and protect
- Touch up paint along passenger sill

Here is the car on arrival.

That's a stunning turnaround. Shame on the owner for letting such a lovely car fall in to such a poor condition.

Anyway, who did you use for alloys? I still maintain that if you teamed up with a bodyshop and wheelshop, you'd be able to sort out any car with any level of damage and make it look brand new!
