This topic has probably been flogged to death, but just trying to find out if anyone went from manual to DSG and disliked it so much they sold and went back to manual? :driver:
-
Had a DSG in the past in an A3 2.0TFSI - it really is an awesome piece of kit. The only downside is if the mechs unit lets go....
Opted for a manual in my GTI as it was the only Steel grey in the VW network at the time.
You won't regret owning a dsg Justin :happy2:
-
DSG is the best i love it... carnt see me going back to manual now...
-
When u drive a DSG, do u have to take your foot off the gas like a manual to change gears?
-
When u drive a DSG, do u have to take your foot off the gas like a manual to change gears?
No, it's just poooowweeerr, powwwwweeerrr, powweeeerrrr
-
Are u saying that's u keep your foot planted and just hit the paddle :notworthy:
-
You need to go in one to appreciate it mate, they're on another level...
-
EXACTLY!
-
:signLOL: u guys still haven't answered my simple question? I will be driving 1 soon, but just want to know if u must keep your foot planted when changing up? Don't want to damage the damn thing
-
Yes mate, foot on the deck and just keep tapping the up paddle. Couldnt be easier. :happy2:
-
That's absolutely mental :stupid:
How many BHP or lbs/ft torque Is the DSG good for?
One of the main reasons for going this way is to stop having issues with stage 2+ clutch burnout!
-
Hurdy had about 4 million ftlbs so stage 2+ should be ok :-)
-
:signLOL: :signLOL: :signLOL: :signLOL: :signLOL: :rolleye: :rolleye: :rolleye: :rolleye:
That's a lot of fu**ing torque!!!!
-
just wrote a massive spiel there about the DSG but then it came up internal error 550....
so i cant b arsed writing it all again all im gonna say is you will not regret buying a DSG....it will be the smartest move youv made all year!
iv owned mainly manuals but owned an auto and hated it! But i dont think i would go back to a manual after the DSG
-
I love DSG its my first Auto, the only thing i would ensure is you have some warranty just in case it al goes wrong :happy2:
-
You'll do anything to beat me up the strip lol
:P
-
When I was looking to buy a GTI, I looked at DSG. Then read abou problems in America with the DSG which put me off so bought a manual instead. The problem turned out to be the mechatronics unit.
I sat in a mate's ED30 DSG - he floored it, and as it accelerated, no lurch, no changing up/down revs, just a smooth strong pull all the way.
If I'd the opportunity, I'd go DSG all the way.
-
Thanks for all the info guys :congrats:
You've made my mind up for me :driver:
Sy, I'll see u on the strip at Inters next year
-
Test drove both dsg ed30 and manual ed30, and I bought the manual, found the manual more involving to my style of driving, just could not get on with the dsg
-
Do I detect a spanner in the works???
-
I test drove a DSG, I was looking forward to it but once I'd tried it I knew it wasn't for me.
Just don't like it so it's manual all the way for me.
-
On my 4th dsg car, will not go back to a vw in manual..period
-
I had a manual gti for 4 years then went for an ed30. As I was basically buying the same car again I went for dsg as it would sort of be like having a different car.
At first I thought wtf have I done, big mistake. I felt quite detached from the car was finding it difficult to have fun.
In my case I just needed some time to learn about and get used to the dsg. Once I had it was awesome, especially with a dsg remap.
Yes I do miss ramming it into gear like a nutter, but for me driving can be just as much fun and it comes into its own in traffic or when you just want to have a relaxed journey.
On the downside I find the dsg not quite as quick when pulling out of a busy junction as with a manual you can have the clutch primed on the edge of biting. Of course you can always use launch control which I’ve not tried it yet so not sure how easy it is to do.
Someone here’s got a sig:
“DSG, as crazy as you want, as lazy as you want”
That sums it up for me.
Would I go back to a manual?..... No chance.
-
i agree with you when you say its not as quick at coming out of a junction but theres one way to solve that.....fire it into S lol and problem sorted
-
I thought S ment Slow mode.... :chicken:
-
Why bother using S, just a couple of tugs on the left paddle and BOSH!!!
-
S mode and ESP off is where my dsg mapped Ed30 likes it best :innocent:
If you haven't tried it, give it a go...
As long as its safe to do so
-
Will be trying hat soon in my DSG S3
-
Will do Steve... Once I get these plugs changed and the road is dry! :-)
-
With the S3 I don't have to worry about the dry roads :pomppomp:
-
No... You just have to worry about driving an Audi...... :popcornsoda:
-
I too am a DSG virgin! Wasn't looking for it specifically but the car I bought had a great spec and 'happened' to be DSG. I have to say it is taking me a while to get used to the variety of different ways to change gear with no clutch, having always had manuals, but I'm hoping it will come with time.
The most annoying thing (which is likely to be me rather than the car!) is when on a country lane and I have to reverse unexpectedly, fumbling for 'R' - having made a rather jerky emergency stop missing the clutch pedal!!!! :ashamed: I think its fair to say I'm not quite as confident behind the wheel as yet.
On balance though it seems to be 'more cars in one' than the manual as its easy lazy-driving around town. Getting into a manual car at work now, I sometimes forget about the clutch and nearly stall. I guess I'm in the transition phase..........
-
Ive gone from a manual Ed30 to a A3 2.0T S-Line with S-Tronic (Audi speak for DSG)
Plus points
Smooth and easy to drive round town.
Paddles give super fast changes
Full Throttle upchages
DSG Parp on full throttle upchanges
Auto blip on downchanges
Neg points
Sometimes it jumps down a couple of gears and revs the nuts off it when all you wanted it a bit extra torque. As a result i usually put it in manual on the motorway.
Sport mode IMO is useless on the K03 engine - revs it out to the redline when peak power has past at 5.5k
Occasionally you catch the box out when it expects you to want an upchange and you go for a downshift - leaves you without power for a couple of seconds then bangs back in when the change catches up.
Kickdown isnt disabled in manual mode (DSG Remap sorts this)
Uses more fuel.
Cant beat the satisfaction a manual gives you when you nail a heel and toe downchange when out for a blast.
Would i buy another one......Difficult question. Whilst i like the smoothness through town i dont like the feeling of being disengaed from the box and dont like the fact that it uses more fuel. Im getting easily 5-6 mpg less than i did with the eddie. I think when it comes to replacing it ill probably buy another Manual.
All of the above is just my own opinion! HTH :happy2:
-
Dsg is meant to be better for mpg
-
OK - Here's another opinion:
Many people who say they don't like DSG (or automatics in general) seem to expect it to be telepathic. If you take the time to understand how it works - RTM! - it's not too tricky to get it working for you. For example, if you're accelerating smoothly in third, it'll have fourth ready for you. Therefore, if you want an extra dose of acceleration by downshifting, there will be a delay. Of course, you might feel frustrated by this, but remember i) it's still going to change quicker and smoother than you in a manual, and ii) it's your fault. Why is it your fault? Well, if you had been planning ahead, you would have had plenty of time to pull a paddle.
I regularly swap from autos to manuals, and I just don't have a problem anymore. I recommend bending your left leg (to take your foot away from where you subconsciously expect the clutch pedal to be) when in an auto, and always putting your foot on the clutch when starting a manual. Works for me, anyway.
Last word on the subject - you can't beat the sound of DSG's full throttle upchange!
-
The manual on the GTI is good, but the DSG Is very advanced and is best of both worlds. Has launch control too, only prob is the mech unit failing and costing a bomb to replace. Personal preference really but drive both & decide yourself.
