When Volkswagen fixed the GTI badge to the original Golf in 1976, its engineers hit on the perfect formula. The arrival of every subsequent GTI has been eagerly anticipated ever since.
After several years in the doldrums, the superb MkV firmly re-established the GTI as one of the most desirable, charismatic and enjoyable hot hatches money can buy. So expectations of the new MkVI are higher than ever. To see if it can live up to the legend, we decided to put it to the ultimate test, by taking an original MkI GTI to the car’s launch.
It is smaller and slower than its modern day counterpart, but the first GTI firmly established the hot hatch template. The new GTI hits showrooms on 22 May, and its revised 2.0-litre engine produces more power and lower emissions than before. It’s also available with a few hi-tech firsts, including VW’s Adaptive Chassis Control system.
Class-leading safety and refinement also ensure the latest GTI promises to be the best yet – but how does it rate against the daddy of them all?

i must say i do really like the look of that on the left! its the xenons that make it nicer for me!
-
I'm not too sure about the new GTi... doesn't look as aggressive as the MK5.
-
Yeah I know what you mean Jay the Xenons make it look a little evil!
-
i really do like the mk6 gti now!
-
as top cat has said before, it would look miles better with bump strips!
-
im no fan. mk6 gti r20
-
I am sure it will be a great car, but the styling and lines of the lesser model's on our roads at the moment really dissapoints me, i was coming back from Bristol yesterday and there was a Mk 6 directly behind a Touran in the middle lane and it reminded me of a golf and a golf + very similar to each other.
Its natural for 95 % of us lot to give the new girl a bashing all previous marks do it, even if it looked like a Alfa 8C we would find some way of moaning about it or the snobs who will buy one  as we get called
I really hope the GTI looks better in the flesh than whats on our roads at the minute. :chicken:
-
the inside is a bit ming...
see the made the rear more agressive tho
-
admittedly, i am not a fan of the boggo mk6s knocking around at the moment!! at all!!
but then again, i hate boggo mk5s!!!!
-
It is starting to grow on me a little. I will have to see one in the flesh I think first. Auto Express said it was subtly better in all areas than the mk5, sounds good :happy2:
-
I have a feeling it will look better in the flesh ..... though the MkVI's I've seen so far don't IMO look anywhere near as good as the MkV ....
-
It looks much better in the flesh! Especially in white 8) 8)

Don't !! I don't want to see one in white .... it could be expensive :scared:

+1 I can confirm that seeing it in the flesh will only confirm your 'need' for one if your already hankering! :happy2:
-
do any of you actually like a bog standard mk5? i certainly dont.
same goes for the mk6.
but the GTi, well i love both the mk5 and the mk6 gti!
-
i really really want to like it, but too much plastic on the front and the back still looks too peugeot for me.
VW have messed up the MK5.5 MK6, like they did with the MK3 imho

all the lesser ones i've seen in silver and candy with 18'' wheels look cracking and have a real presence, the dpb on 16''s didn't tike that box today

Why do you have such a bee in your bonnet about it being a face lift? The mk5 chassis was/is years ahead in terms of quality and build, it doesnt need to be changed.
IMO it looks the most aggressive out of all the previous marks, its the interior Im not as keen on.
-
It looks droolworthy, I love the front light clusters, and although the perceived quality is improved, but it's using cheaper bits, and if you're an obsessive like me you'll be able to tell.

less of a bee... more of a gnat. just a bit disappointed with the styling, not a hater though, it's a cool car :happy2:
-
I like the front and side, but the Touran-esque rear lights look even more dated than the MK5! Good for us, I guess :)
I'm getting some of those skirts for mine, they're very nice!
-
What I'm disappointed about is that none of the Golf VIs get LED lights (front or rear) as standard. By now pretty much all automakers should be using LED-based light clusters but many still see it as a prettification option. LEDs are much more resiliant, longer-lasting, and above all safer.
-
Funny you say that...I had exactly the same thoughts... I suspect they will do the LED thing when they go for a minor facelift 3-4 years into the MK6 lifespan.
-
or they just want to give you modders the opportunity to mod!
i bet the European version gets LED's, and its just the UK that doesn't have it!
-
I also think the MK6 is one of the nicest looking standard MKs for a long time.
Drop + nice wheels = Win.

....Yet again I agree with you! Do you think it's because we are both 'Creatives' and so apply similar design criteria/considerations?
I also think that Jay has a good point about boggo versions. But I can't see myself liking the Mk6 GTI rear from the boggo ones I've seen. Mind you, I don't like the Mk5 GTI black plastic Ford Ka rear bumper either.
I really don't like the ACC cr@p - It's just a marketing tool (I've driven the Rocco and tested it).
-
Robin I think its more to do with personal preference , I have a 2:1 in MM and Graphic Design, and consider myself to be creative.
-
to be honest - am much more of a fan of the looks of the MK5 than the MK6....
But i love the Facelift S3 - think its a stunning looking car, especially in electric blue (dont think thats the name of the color)
-
I guess i was the only one looking at the mk1  Wish they had used a better one
I like the mk6 from the front (with xenons with AFS) and also like the rear in certain colours (still not sure why at the rear the defuser does not seem to fit maybe its just the angles i have seen photos from) its the side profile im not that keen on and much prefer the mk5 from the side. I think its those door handles and lack of side strip.
-
I like the MKVI, but there are some places in the design execution that are just plain wrong.
The door handles are just plain wrong - they stick out too far and the MKV ones look much better.
The rear light clusters look like they were designed by my 6 year old nephew. The MKV ones are bad enough, but the MKVI looks like it took a leaf out of the "how not to design...." book.
The rear windscreen has a gap at the top of it that is only just a little narrower than the Panama canal - I showed Matt this at Ultimate dubs.
The MKV is far from perfect, but I can see where the cost cutting has been done.
The upsides to the MKVI are that it is now fully colour coded at the front and rear - big bonus.
Some of the extra technologies are an upside - but I still get the feeling they maybe a bit "gadgety" rather than do much for the driving enhancement.
The front light clusters on with the Xenons are growing on me and are an option I would have to choose next time around (assuming I go for a MKVI).
I'm probably one of the few people who like the fact that they have removed the bump strips - although it is definitely part of the VW cost cutting regime.
I'm just hoping that VW can blow us away with the R20 design. :jumping:
-
^Do you think the gap maybe there for the spoiler to locate into on models with one or simply an oops.
-
I spotted my first 3 door MKVI today and it looked very tasty. It was a black TSi with big 18" rims, if the GTI looks anything like this it will definately be a winner for me! Even the rear light clusters seem to look better against the black paint work! :happy2:
-
I was just saying to the chaps at the meet today that I saw a dark blue MKVI and the rear clusters did look pretty good lit up...
