Post by: ED30_jase on November 07, 2011, 09:23:15 pm
Basically just curious as to which has the better engine....my ED30 the 35 or the R?

I know there's maybe a lot more too it than a quick answer but people's opinions are welcome!

I suspect the R will have the S3 IC and the ed35 the standard gti one.

So same engine, just poss diff intercooler on the R model then, nice that they know a good unit when they have one and re-use it

as stated above.

In all honesty I would rather mk6 TSI GTI engine. seeing TSI engine with APR K04 kit already makes 366WHP. no internal change. New Stage 3 kit is around 450HP. Stage 4? well will have to wait and see.

The TSI overall seems a better engine for maintenance and no stupid camshaft bucket and fuel pump crap issue. I drive TFSI engine, so know these stupid issue's all to well.

Surely the "R" engine would have EVEN STRONGER internals than the ED30?  :innocent:

Why if it's effectively the same engine??

To cope with the extra 30bhp (ish) they gave it. Vw like headroom (along with other manufacturers) so they will always leave so many % headroom. They will have increased the strength of the engine to match the headroom of the ED30

VW chose the EA113 over the EA888 for the Ed35 for a reason! Brilliant unit. Check out the Car magazine Sports Car of the Year feature in which the Ed35 beats the 1series M, 370Z, Mini coupe JCW, RS3, DS3 & comes joint second with the Megane Trophy, losing out only to the Cayman R.

Which you think is the best unit depends on whether you want 2 or 4wd. Personally it would be the Ed35 for me. I love the unit in my Mk5, and will skip the standard Mk6 based on a recent test drive which confirmed what Car says in this article; "using the EA113 unit........the rawer character so far missing from the MK6 GTi is back"
