Title: home brew induction/cai for mk5 gti - anyone tried?
Post by: jimk04 on November 08, 2011, 07:23:12 pm
Has anyone 'made' their own with ally pipes/silicone bends?

Apart from keeping the MAf section the correct diameter I cant really see why a home made one should be any worse than these £300 jobs?

Does anyone know if the MAF size needs to be kept at the OE diameter?

i would of thought so, due to map scaling?

Surely the link below would work out cheaper and better than making you own?

I think by the time you have bought all the components etc then you won't be far off the cost of the kits on the market. What about a Neuspeed P Flo if you don't want to spend £300+?

I think it will have to be a P-flo for me on the grounds of cost unless I have a crack myself.

Its just the MAF bit that need some looking at!

i have a custom cai on mine, aaron rj off here built it himself - but copied the BDM induction kit. My advice would be to buy a genuine product from BDM (as they are a good cai, very aggressive and flow a lot of air) and think they are cheaper than Twintake/Itg  :happy2:

They are made by alex... with the exception of the filter and hoses! I think all of the intakes are over priced to be honest, all they are is a few silicon hoses and bits of metal tubing, with a filter on the end.

another alternative is th BSH True Seal - it's DV relocation port is in an inconvenient place tho! the bung for mine was right up against the brake reservoir, so when the engine moved it sliced a hole through it.

Sounds like another BSH winning product.

Can the one on ebay be that bad to not even be considered for the price? Maybe with a decent filter on it could it perform as good if not better than some other 'Named' brands?

The one off ebay has a great filter so you wont be disapointed as i wouldnt spend alot of money as i dont think they are worth £300-£400 etc.

I have been running the ebay one for over a year now without dissapointment. Along side a Autobahn88 intercooler and Now a Toyosport downpipe, All for £70 less than a ITG CAI :scared:

Got any pics jaywoo?

Alot of peeps are out off cheap products because 9/10 times they use cheap materials to build them! Usual stories will be poor fitting, thin stainless and a low grade on downpipes/exhausts, low quality filters in induction kits, badly designed coolers.
These are all my thoughts when looking at cheap parts like your mentioning, but if it's working for you more fool us I guess?

First pic is not my car but exactly the same CAI as mine,

Only paid £70 for the intercooler brand new so was worht taking a chance on it.

Also will try and get a pic of my downpipe as the welding and material is better than more expensive items i have seen and purchased in the past.

For the money I have to admit that doesn't look bad!

Do you have any dyno readouts of how your car performs with it all on? Inlet temps?

Not yet but once the dwonpie is fitted im off to have a stage 2 map.
From the Liqiud 2 gauge the car normally runs 10-12 degress above ambient, but not done any logging,
Also a calculated bhp reading through the liquid 2 still sees 250bhp on a stage 1 map.

lol i think considering there aren't more horror stories like mine the fault is with me rather than the product! plus from looking at photos it looks like the 8P has it's brake fluid reservoir in a different place to the Golf

Yep ebay downpipe, But got for the Turbo_Revs one as the Clamp is better, and just to be on the safe side i got a new gasket and nuts from VW.

And also the intake is the £65 ebay one that i posted on the previous page.
