My 56 plate 170 TDI idles at about 1k even once warm. When you pull upto traffic lights she will idle at 1k for 5 sec then drop to 800rpm as normal. You can also bring it down to 800rpm by dragging clutch. Any idea what's causing this or do they all just do this and I'm being paranoid?

No idea what the problem is but mine definitely doesn't do that.
Some kind of speed sensor issue.

No fault codes on Vag com

Its the DPF regen thing oftern makes car idle at 1k Ive found out. Well I will sleep sound to night knowing thats another problem off my mind

. Yep it's the Dpf regen.... You can always tell cause your motor will begin to run lumpy then tick over at 1k and poss smell a little diff... Give it a blast on the motorway in 4th at about 70ish so your revs are higher that does the trick .... A blast a week up the motorway was all I did to keep it running ok... Poss look into Dpf off then remap to suit downpipe etc then your into 220bhp area and torque to die for..... They are a brill motor and don't deserve the bad vibes it gets... When it's in full flight it gives other cars plenty of shocks.... Ahhh memories

Cheers mate. Did your also smell diesel like when all your doing is small trips? Im not doing many motorway miles for next 6 weeks so think It could be that. Its starting to worry me the smell even though I have no fault codes. Maybe a blast 3 junctions up the motorway to my mates one night this week.

. Nowt to worry bout mate just leather it up and down the mway a few junctions and that will do the trick... Higher temp and that will burn the carbon soot particles in your filter.... Like any car it runs better after its stretched it's legs on a run but with the Dpf you have to do so more often ... But on the plus side you do have clean zorst pipes

Thanks. Its put my mind at rest.

ironic really as you buy a diesel to save you money on your mpg..... So now when it runs ropey you have to run it in a lower gear at a higher rev range---- thus using more diesel  a word of warning tho.. If its happening all the time now you will have to take it on a proper longish run to burn the crap out.. Short little blasts will only get rid of a certain percentage then the build up starts again. I had mine for 18months and only did 5mile round trips so not ideal but doing what I said will help but when show season was on and plenty trips down south it comes into its own .... Hope this helps as my fingers tired now :P

If it doesn't sort it out and you have VCDS login to the engine module via
Security Code 12233,
go into Adaptations and chose
Channel 06
look at the rpm in the second box and change the number but dont take it under 800 experiment with different rpm ranges until you get a good balance.
