Title: TT alloy wishbones
Post by: Scousus maximus on November 09, 2011, 07:38:53 pm
I've just been browsing these in the " for sale"  section and need to ask a basic question which will probably draw a few chuckles,, but if you don't ask you don't find out.
Anyway it looks like the camber adjustment is taken care of by the ball joint having slotted holes so my question is can these ball joints be fitted to standard wishbones and give similar camber adjustment? I know it can't be that easy but answers from the experts are always welcome.

Regards,

John

Jon who is selling them tried this a long time ago with a little modifying but IMO I wouldn't risk it.

From the reviews it's a great chassis mods

John Im sure the arms and joints will be cast with very fine tolerances if you tried to modify a standard arm it will probably weaken the structure?? But Im no expert so the dynamics and knowledge are left to the likes of the bruce, rex and im sure daveb and the other engineering guys could answer this but think he's very busy at the moment...?

Hi Darren, don't worry mate I'm not about to try any mods, it was really just a "I wonder if" moment. I'm happy to leave all the springy, shocky, shafty, brakey and jointy bits to the experts. :happy2:
Regards,
John

can these ball joints be fitted to standard wishbones and give similar camber adjustment?

Hi there!
To simply answer your question: I don't know, I never asked myself this question...
The TT camber is adjustable within some limits (between ~ 1.5' to ~ 2.5'). So, by using the TT arms your minimum camber is greater than the stock one, which is not adjustable (it only changes in if the toe or caster are changed) and is about 1 degree. This is because the TT arm is longer than the stock one. So, looking at the bigger picture, I would say, even if the ball joints fit, having adjustable camber between 0.5 to 1.5 degrees won't help.
Here is a picture of my TT vs stock arm side by side. By looking at the picture at the biggest resolution I found no conclusive answers. Maybe you will see something I didn't.

The thinks that you must take into consideration:
- Are the wholes the same?
- are there any issues if the TT ball joint sits above the arm (usually the TT ball joint sits below the arm but some colleagues have fitted it above and they had no problem yet, and hopefully for ever)?

Good luck!

TT ball joints won't fit the standard GTi wishbones.

Alex are you familiar with fitting the TT arms onto a Cupra with alloy hubs?

The cupra hubs are the same as the s3 hubs and the tt wishbones fit slightly differently on the ball joint.

So yes to the question  :happy2:

Mike, it's a no brainer control arm has to go under ball joint as there's no room for it above ball joint due to your Cupra/S3 alloy hub  :happy2:

So long as its a safe reliable solution  :happy2:

Mike, TT arms look similar to S3/Cupra/Passat arms, but are slightly
longer and have a different bolt pattern to fit the also different ball
joint. This is the reason why TT ball joints don't fit S3/Cupra arms.

The result is more camber and the adjustability of camber. The weight
remains the same (compared to S3/Cupra) as these are all made from
forged aluminium.

With new Audi ball joints and the list of parts in a long thread they work perfectly. They add track and camber and lose valuable weight. The final result is effectively a slightly longer lighter bottom arm that's adjustable.

a great mod for improving turn in, feel and front end grip. Read up on theMorego BBR modded GTi this was achieved by extending the heavy original bottom arms.

Maybe a silly question but:  do they give improved straightening grip?

IM not quite sure what you mean; but i think i can answer, the more camber the less rubber has contact with the surface in a straight line

Yes, no improvement in accelaration at all.
If you adjust a high amount of camber traction may be an issue without a LSD.
