The little metal loop at the top of the key has broken off and the buttons just don't work as well. Was planning on replacing the key. Can I just swap the blade and electronic gubbins over to a new key?

There's one for sale in Car parts cheap and offer to have it coded I think if bought :happy2:

Never done it before but I can't see why you can't simply transfer the internals of the old fob into a new one.

Certainly can, did it as soon as I bought my car. Just bought the case from eBay, took it all apart and replaced the inners and the key part with mine. Just need to get the spring in correctly otherwise the key doesn't spring out quite right, but easy to get right.
Key just prises in half using a small flat blade twisted 90 degrees in the slot under where the key rests when closed. The other other thing I had to do on mine was to put some glue when the little transponder thing goes (looks like a small tube) as the new case did not have a piece of plastic to stop it moving). There is also a small screw under the VW badge on the back which you need to unscrew to get the top half to separate
Dead easy though and came with a new VW badge for the back to stick on. :happy2:

Did you have to reprogram the key or the immobiliser?

Nope as just moved over all the inners so it's just a new skin
