I'm thinking of finally taking the plunge and ordering an RNS 510 unit from Tommy over on VW NAVI (thanks for the recommendation 182 Blue!)
Question is, although the unit comes supplied with an antenna for behind the dash can I get the shark fin style from the dealer and fit this to the car so it's a proper installation??
Has anybody tried this and if so do I need to order anything else from the delaer aside to the antenna itself??
Thanks
JD

i think you will need to get the cable too, and run it to the aerial, its a bit of a tedious job so most people just use the little plug in one like the one Tommy will send you

ps here are the part numbers (this is for the newer nav and radio aerial as in pic below)
Base- 1K0 035 501 F

the aerial tommy sends is perfect. Hidden under the vent and always has a great signal. Don't over complicate this part, it's just fine as it is :happy2:

true, plus it wont draw thieves attention to the fact you have nav in the car, this is basically what stopped me doing it

A thief will look at the aerial to see if you have satnav but won't look inside at the stereo? :chicken:

This is my ariel in the picture and to be honest its not that hard to fit the cable from the RNS510,most of the trim just pulls off :happy2:
-
what did it cost all in ?, and where did you run the cable
-
Tommy ftw :D
and RNS-510 ftw :D
I understood you had to take most of the roof lining apart to run the external antenna. But if it's easy, go for it.

Base- 1K0 035 501 F -£60
Rod Type Ariel- 1J0 035 849 A -£12
Gps Antenna Cable- 000 098 656 -£15
Ran the cable through the back of the clocks, then along and down the fusebox, then through the floor trim right along to the back boot,up to the rear airbag, take back trim of the rooflining of boot off then across to the roof ariel hole, connect to ariel base, tighten nut not too much, put rear trim of rooflining back on,connect rod type ariel and thats it!!!antenna cable was secured with cable ties all the way through process :happy2:
