Title: Brother had a bump in the Golf
Post by: cmdrfire on November 14, 2011, 05:16:55 pm
Well, my brother got a puncture in his Scirocco a little while back, couldn't get a replacement tyre that day (was Friday) and as I was not using the Golf I let him borrow it. Big mistake, I thought he was just going to take it home, but he was driving to London on the Saturday and had a bit of a bump. Not too bad, but it's a new driver side wing, bumper, and new driver side headlamp cluster (the unit works fine, but it's been scuffed and the mounting points have broken). Was very upset to say the least.

Anyhoo, I was thinking, either I could get my friendly neighbourhood VW bodyshop to get all new bits (bumper, light, and wing; bonnet might be OK) and live with that, or (and to counteract any rust that may develop in the future on the arch) I could get the Seibon carbon wings, Osir carbon bonnet, and a US spec bumper with sidemarkers (will probably do this anyway). So I tun to the forum for:

a) thoughts on the front wings - I know a couple of people have them fitted (did a search and DanishMkV's review came up), just want to know how they are faring and did they have them painted etc, whether there's any rubbing and squeaks or wear problems? Fitment issues at installation or developed over time? Overall thoughts now they've "settled" in a for a bit? What did you do with your arch liners etc.

b) thoughts on bonnet - I know Robin's had his fitted for ages, no problems with that? Fitment issues?

c) US spec bumper - someone here had one fitted, GTI Mad maybe? Any ideas for part numbers/importer and sidemarker hookups?

Cheers all!

N.

Ooops! Sorry to hear this but glad it's not worse.

My OSIR double skin carbon bonnet is fine and has been for the long time I've had it. It is tricky to line up absolutely perfectly and some folks wouldn't be satisfied with the fit compared to the OEM steel bonnet but I'm not one of those fussy folk.

I've seriously considered the carbon wings but my financial circumstances don't currently allow. I'm told that the inevitable gap between the wider carbon wings and the OEM arch liners is nothing to worry about. I was told this by a trusted bodywork specialist who has no vested interest.

Sounds as if you might be thanking your bro in the longer term! As one door closes, another door opens   Always think positive  :happy2:

Thanks chaps  :happy2:

IIRC last time I saw your car Robin the panel lines weren't any better or worse than with the steel bonnet, though I wasn't looking too closely...

@ Mr Mad, can you dig out those numbers for me please? Where did you get the bits imported from? (BTW, are you going to make it to the next meet, whenever that is?)

... I <3 the US sidemarkers. Think they'd look rad on a laser blue.

I love the US look, so think that the bumper markers look ace as long as the connectors are in, though not seen a lazer blue one with them, so not sure how they would look.
Worth a try though if you want to make the most of a bad situation (is he paying? )
