I saw something on a forum that got me thinking, the poster wrote :-
They're used as getaway cars and stolen because they security is terrible and has been since the mk4 (in and away in 2 minutes - no damage and no noise)
How easy is it to take a mk5 ?, he emailed me how they do it but i dont think its possible, thoughts ?

Very easy i'm afraid :sad1:
-
even with REVO / APR throttle pedal kill?
-
If its that easy... why are there not more stories on here about ED30s and R32s been stolen?

I don't think so Mike, but the example was a stock car to my understanding, but every little helps
-
Is now thinking how to make mine more secure as its stock :scared:
-
Very easy hence why mine sits in my grg with Revo anti theft on
-

Activated with the SPS+?

or cruise stalk on APR

same story for the 8P unfortunately!
-
Yeah sps switch
-
You could always put the car in transport mode if you have vag com
-
I read the same on that forum too. I've always thought that the MK5/MK6 Platform was up there in terms of security, there is not much on it in the Motoring rags unless I am missing something?
Alex
-
Seriously? I thought an immobiliser made it impossible. Why are there not any more stories about MK5s being stolen?
-
Seriously???? Surely its not possible without the key? :surprised: :surprised: :surprised:
-
Very easy...
Had my car security uprated within a day of getting the car home..
Clifford Avantguarde...
-
If you have polar fis I can tell you how to disable your car straight away, Some scally is not going to look for why its not going to start up and will leave it...I hope
Darren
-
I have the Viper 5002 2 Way Car Alarm ,this alarm is instaled in combination with SMS commander ,so full protection is 99%
Here is the YT link about SMS commander ,the subtitles are on English
-
You could always put the car in transport mode if you have vag com
what does that do for security. Transport mode shuts off most of the comfort electronics, probably the alarm too
-
I thought you could set the car up to only rev to a certain point with vag com like a service setting so the cant be booted when in for a service
-
Have any been stolen with no keys?
-
I would like to know how they steal them. An insurance company will not pay out if you still have the keys. I believe that they cannot be driven without keys. They can be stolen by towing lifting etc but not driven. Can someone enlighten me ?

Thats what worries me to no insurance payout, i cant belive its 'easy' must require quite alot of time to get around the imobilser?

Thats not true, my mate had his car stolen from a car park at work (his keys were in his pocket!) not sure how they got it away but his insurance company paid out in full to agreed value.

Oh at least they have to smash the window to attach the cable then which should set off the alarm. So you have some chance..
VW will have to do something terrible for there reputation.

Oh right ok so they need to get in to attach the cable which will mean a smashed window and alarm going off. So not that easy. :surprised:

i thought you needed the key also, hence why people brake into houses to get them? looks like revo switch is going to be used a fair bit more...

No need to smash windows apparently, they can get in without setting alarms off :scared:

Are we sure these people are real and not from another planet? They can get inside the car attach a laptop and steal it within 2 minutes? This is starting to sound a little unbelivable. :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

Yes i thought this, hence my post, but it looks from the replies that its possible.

Makes no diff if you use a disklok like myself and the other chap who posted the same thing.
-
Pm me how they think its done and I will look into it.
-
I would imagine that it is technically possible for highly skilled engineers to do in the right enviroment, but if we are talking about your average chav scum with a dell laptop and cheap ebay cable then its time to get shot...

I cant be arsed with one you to much bulk to carry around. Plus they probably have a way of removing them in less that 30 seconds using magnets.. :signLOL: :signLOL: :signLOL: :signLOL: :signLOL:

Its a SILVER version sized "small" (upto 39cm steering wheels) and fits ED30 steering wheel perfectly (used on my MK4 previously).
Its not much of a ballache to use, and it fits easy enough behin passenger seat n footwell where i keep it, its vertainly easier to use than filling out insurance forms anyway. Its more of a deterrant as a determined t-leaf would get it if he wanted but im sure there are easier targets out there without it.
-
can someone PM me about this so i have the best chance of this not happening to my golf??
-
Same here - can someone PM me the details?
This has me concerned!!
-
the tool in question cost a few thousand, so your average run of the mill toerag isn't going to have it.

i found the small size up to 39" rubbed on the leather steering wheel so better of going medium

What worries me is the ******* breaking into your house while you sleep to steel your keys.

I can accept them stealing with keys as they will need to break into the house... But if they can just nick of the drive in 5 minutes in the middle of the night with no alarm going off!!!
VW will have to act...

Factory security is rubbish!! Simple!!
The use of a 'scanner ' aka code grabber allows easy access into a car... A theif with these special scanners simply waits for a person to lock/unlock their car from a distance... once you press your keyfob the signal is picked up by the scanner and copied... once you've left your car the theif simply unlocks your car with the copied signal...
Dont know about other alarm systems, but Clifford use a scrambled code/ code hopper programme... everytime the keyfob is used a different code is used..
-
Surley the mark 5 uses a rolling code!!

what car and what year was it manufactured ?
Code grabbers have been around since the late 90's , if it was easy there would be thousands of cars stolen even if the equipment cost thousands .

can some1 pm me the details how they did this plz as im abit worried now that they can get in2 ur car without breaking windows :scared: :scared:

lol Clifford wont save you... but whatever delays the theif is a result..
It does feature an additional pin required immobiliser tho... So even if they do get your keys they still wont be able to take your pride and joy..
If you're confronted by the theif.. simply let its blaxjax feature kick in... :happy2:

This is a complete load of bollocks, they would not be coming in through our patios with bats if they could just use a little device. :fighting2:
-
Stolen mk5 gti or r32 normally equals a robbery of somesort in the near future, thieves favourite get away cars at the moment.
-
who says?
-
Cumbria police!
-
So what about the Revo Switch???
I use mine every night!
I suppose all u can do is slow the ba${^*€$ down. It's like they say, if they really want the car they will get it.
-
Cumbria police!
Can you please direct me to where they have said this ? It has an effect on all our Insurances and has to be backed up with accurate figures. So please for the benefit of all of our insurance premiums tell us what they have said or where we can read it for ourselves.
For your information most get away cars are not fast or performace cars .
-
Unfortunatelyl I cant do that and what I've just said on a forum isn't going to dramatically change everyone's insurance premiuim but take it as a given that I know its a fact the mk5 especially the R32 and Gti are obviously easy to steal and because of their performance are favoured by armed thieves for cash in transit robberies and ramraids, normally its due to car key break ins. I can't speak for the rest of the country but this is a real issue that I have experience of in the North West.

The quote on the forum will obviously not increase the insurance premiums but you stated Cumbria Police stated such and police statistics go towards underwriting car insurance. How are the MK5's obviously easy to steal then ? Then you state its because the keys have been stolen in break ins , well i'll tell you one thing i can steal any car if i have the keys . If MK5's were easy to steal the insurance ratings would leap and they haven't , they are still rated the same since their release dates. Ask Flying squad officers or SO19 officers what cars are favoured by these scum and they will not tell you the MK5 GTI/R32. What is your experience in the NW then ?

At the end of the day 99.9% of what people post on internet forums can only be deemed as "opinion" so you either believe it or not, thats up to you, I cant directly say where the info I have has come from but it's not exactly Mi5 material and can be found trawling the internet, reading papers or just following the likes of GMP/Cumbria Constabulary etc on twitter.
The point I'm trying to get across is that (In my opinion???) mk5's especially 5dr R32's and Gti's are unfortuantely the current favourites with certain types of thieves for use generally in shop robberies or cash in transits, preferred method is obviously car key burgularies but there are still a number taken keyless so there are clearly ways and means.
Obviously other vehicles are used and maybe it's more to do with fashion that Golfs are taken opposed to how easy they are to steal, who knows? only the thieves themselves maybe but there is certainly a definate trend of the events to follow when a car like this is taken.
Litterally only a few weeks ago a gang robbed a local COOP of all its cigarettes and a chunk of booze, they initially used a small van to get the booty away from the shop but then used a lovely 5dr R32 that they'd left only yards away from my parents house to get back to Liverpool, Manchester or wherever they'd come from.
-
We keep hearing the Mk5 is 'easy' to steal without keys. Have we got any examples? I dont belive its so easy...

They are not easy. If they were the Insurance rating would have risen . It hasn't so that gives you all the answer. Insurance companies don't miss a trick to increase premiums so we should not be worried. It has been said before if they want it they will get it but that is the same for every car from Kia to Koenigsegg
-
OK, there seems to be an awful lot of emphasis on the word "easy" here, obviously not every Tom, Dick or Harry can walk up to one and steal it "easily" but you're not going to tell me that every golf stolen has to have the keys so it IS possible IF you know how, and maybe there's quite of few people who do.
The point I'm trying to make is that whether you like it or not they are a popular chioce for thieves at the moment be it through Key burglaries or otherwise. I guess how popular and how easy will become clear going forward through any insurance amendments.
-
I'd have thought that if a thief really wanted a car, they'd take it key or no key.
Perhaps we should ask the insurers about their opinion on this?

-
Has anyone got an example of a mark 5 being stolen with both keys present?
Not a Golf but a member on here had their S3 stolen in a odd series of events !
-
I bought a key safe not long after i got the golf and keep the car keys locked in when not in use. :happy2:
-
I wouldn't be any more worried than normal to be honest (and I've had a Focus ST nicked previously off my drive - they had the keys via a burglary).
Every forum is paranoid that their cars are going through a spate of thefts - it'll be the same on FFOC, the same on the Scooby forums, etc. The majority of thefts can be blocked by:
- Garage your car if you have the option
- Lock your front door with a key even if you have a uPVC door (this was my mistake as it was opened using some funky implement through the letterbox)
- Don't leave your keys downstairs/near your front door & certainly not within sight of a window/door. This one takes a bit of debate as some people would say it increases your change of a night-time fight if someone does get in
- Always make sure you hear your car lock and the lights flash when you blip the keyfob
A serious car thief isn't that likely to want an MK5 for sale/export - we're not talking an £80K Rangey here. Some idiot kids hooning up and down your local estate or nicking a load of ciggies and burning off in it are much more likely - and a few locks in their way will most likely stop them.
Keep em safe, :-)
-
There are only a few reasons why a car will be stolen
1.Joy Riding........MK5's can only be driven with keys and most post 2001 cars aswell hence joy ridden cars tend to be old cars
2.Stolen to sell on .....organised crime and involves alot of effort knowledge contacts etc....or steal the keys
3.To perform another task...get away car,ram raid etc......again keys required for a decent car
4.Stolen for parts.......usually involves a tow truck/grabber etc no need for keys etc
So keys are really important to the thief. Keys can be gained with a "friendly" main dealer/ man on the inside
Don't put keys in a key safe as thats where the keys are...quite obvious to a burglar
Keep the keys safe and car is generally safe nowadays.
I have been involved in the investigation of thousands over the last 30 years so happen to know a bit about it :innocent:
-
MK5 GTI / R32 - The same reason why most of us have bought these is the same reason why most theives will target these cars.. Safe, fast and practical! Oh and spacious!! Get quite a few money bags in those big old boots!
you could argue why not a Type R, M3 or scooby or any other car? its through their own Legendary status as the Original hot hatch thats led to their popularity amongst theives.. Plus theres loads more GTI's out there than M3's etc...
When i spoke to my insurance company regarding a quote on a standard MK5 1.6 Golf it was 3times as much as my previous car which was 200bhp+ with a whole list of mods!!
Why..? The Insurance lady helpfully explained "... The golf is simply more desirable to theives"
-
3 times more ! I doubt it for a 1.6 mk5 compared to a multi modded 200 plus bhp car. Mk 5 1.6 is Insurance group 6 ! So your saying your modded previous car with 200bhp was about group 3. I think your making it up , but for what reason?
-
How many of the thousands were without keys or 'inside men' ? :happy2:

Cost to insure... Previous car was a group 14... With everything declared on the car the total was under 700!
Insurance on a standard MK5 1.6 under the same conditions -postcode.. etc was just over1800!
-
Proving your keys have been stolen is the first problem most people struggle with when making a claim. I have dealt with one fella who claimed the key fell off his key ring ! He still had all his other keys on the keyring. He had set fire to his car and left the key in the ignition which was recovered and showed no sign of it being worn or damaged allowing it to fall off. He eventually admitted he had lied , but only half way through a Court case.
Burgled homes and keys stolen together and cars stolen with inside men probably makes up less than 5% of total car theft , probably less than that . Alot of car theft is technical theft rather than someone actually creeping up to your car and stealing it. Large majority now are old bangers under £2k due to alot better standard security
-

Well whoever quoted you got it wrong or they didn't want your business. The group 14 compared to group 6 would never be less , that is the whole point of car insurance groups.
-
I'd have thought that if a thief really wanted a car, they'd take it key or no key.
Perhaps we should ask the insurers about their opinion on this?
Car insurance group ratings are monitored and adjusted on a very regular basis and insurers like bookmakers don't like losing money when there is opportunity to make more. Very few Ferraris and Lamborghinis are stolen but they are still top rated insurance risks. Very few Peugeot 106/Citroen C1 's etc are stolen and infact i have never heard of one. They are the lowest group rating ..... why? Expensive cars are rated high to get more money as there is a big loss to pay if one is written off/lost/stolen etc cheap cars rated low as losses will be lower. Very complicated process to get Insurance ratings....there used to be about 15 now there are nearly 100 !
If MK5 GTi/R32's were easy to steal their ratings would have been increased. They haven't and that is the answer Stealthwolf

Thank god someone is talking sense in this thread. Nice one Garrard. :congrats: I guess we have to live with how the internet works. It amazes me how powerful a post can be in certain context, without any proof or statistics to back it up. Just chinese whispers/rumors followed by mass panic. :fighting2:
