mrs candy decided to get cheaper car , put deposit on a 2.0 beetle ant thing i should check before handing over the cash ?
any one after a qashqui 1.5 dci tekna get in touch , cheers
-
Funny, I was going to put a thread like this up as toying with the idea of getting the mrs an older 'new' beetle, but it's hard giving up the 68mpg and £30 tax from her current HDi runaround.
Is it the 2.0 turbo version you're getting? Would be interested to hear what you think of it after a few weeks.
Will watch this with interest
-
I had one. Lasted about 5 months. It was terrible.
-
why , i drove it today and was well impressed with the drive, its a 2.0 8v , 02 reg , 1 owner 59 k miles
-
The 2.slow is a terrible engine, they drink oil and are very thirsty. My first NB was a 2ltr and there is no way I would have another. Check out here www.evvo.co.uk :happy2:
I went from the 2ltr to the 2.3 V5 and tbh the V5 was probably better on fuel and certainly didn't drink oil.

???

what are you comparing them to though , oil use varies from engine to engine , did nt feel slow to me and i drive one of the quickest hot hatches on the market

Sorry to thread jack, but you'd rule out the 1.6 and 2.0 8v? I was looking more at the 1.8T, 2.0T and 2.3 - what sort of MPG did you get?

I think the 1.6 is probably the best of the small engine, the 1.4 is just very under powered for such a heavy car. I know when I had my 1.8T that was thirsty but that's probably cos it was remapped to 220 ish bhp. They didn't do a 2.0T, that will be offered in the latest NB. I cannot remember exactly what mpg I would get from the V5 but I know with the excellent performance and noise it was certainly worthwhile.
-
Can only echo what Mark has already said, worst engine in the line up by a long way. If it was cheap, you now know why!
Ps, you did ask! :rolleye:
-
thanks for your opinions guys :scared:but what other vw could i buy for £2500 in immaculate condition 1 owner from new (they must be pretty happy with it )less than 60k miles with full vw s\h and more besides ?
-
Don't he the 2.0 it's shocking in the mk4 golf go for the 1.8t. I would never have the 2.0 again it's that bad

This is the opinion I have - could get a boring Polo for the same sort of money.
Surely as an A-B car for the missus the 2.0 would be fine, as she doesn't need/want too much performance?

exactly , the idea of the car is to buy some thing for the missus ,. she does about 5 miles a day to nursery and work 3 days a week i looked at loads of cars for this sort of money and its the best car i can buy , didnt want to get it a slagging just probs to look out for , its had the window fix which is the only prob i know about
-
my first choice was the 1.8t but i know they are not good on petrol , insurance is lots higher and find me one with less than 120k miles for sub £3k

This forum might be able to help you out a bit
http://newbeetle.org/forums/questions-issues-concerns-problems-new-beetle/
It's the most decent forum I've found for NBs
This link is for the 'issues' section, so it might give you a few ideas of things to look out for :)
-
my 1.8t new beetle was decent on fuel low 30s average mpg. Check under the sills for damage, either from being jacked up in the wrong place or by catching kerbs
-
cheers guys , read about beetles all afternoon 85% of there owners love them (2.0 version inc ) so cant be too bad

theres a v5 for sale locally but its double the money , double the miles and group 17 insurance , the idea is cheap but still cheerful , thats why the beetle came to mind
-
picked the beetle up this afternoon , top end speed is nt the best , needs a 6 th gear but apart from that really pleased with it its not a gti but for the purpose i want it for its great , build is good feels really solid , very quiet and smooth , power through the gears is nt outstanding but more than adequate
so any one want a pretty cool , cheap run a round for there missus (no normal guy would want one ) i strongly recommend the beetle :happy2:

I guess I'm not normal then as I've had 5 New Beetles in various guises! :signLOL:
-
Nice one :happy2:
I'll wait to see what your MPG is before ruling out the 2.0 for her indoors.
One came up on eBay again local to me, few hundred cheaper than last listing it was up with. Been running with EML light for a while and recently had a new head gasket, so I'll continue to keep one eye on what's available.

I never said they were sh*t, just the 2ltr engine is not the best and I wouldn't have another, hence why the rest were V5 & 1.8T's. Enjoy it I hope it serves you well. I've hung up my scissors now

Got my eye on a 1.9 PD100 Beetle, has a tad more power than her current car as standard.
Anyone got any tips on what to look out for on those engines? It's done 100k.
-
Got to say my 03 1.8T was pretty good on petrol averaged 33mpg and 40mpg on a run, that was with a remap and i was be no means trying to drive economically

-
:signLOL: we said it was poo :signLOL:
-
not at all guys i think its a great car , no motorway cruiser by a long way but for school run , shoping and general girly things i think its the best car to buy for the money
only thing ill admit drove up to harrogate in the megane yesterday and back this morning and vw dont even make a car in the same class :P
-
the other reason is the qashqai came back from the body shop and looked better than new so she s decided to keep that , well i ve got to pay off the finance !! women !!

I wouldn't expect you to say anything else seeing as you are now trying to selling it on! :signLOL:
-
i did think about keeping it tbh as a winter car for me but its just waste of money the 250 has done 700 miles in 8 months so the beetle wont get used
i honestly think its a good car , you guys are comparing it to your mk5 s im saying it as a stylish practical car , it drives really well , smooth , quiet and easy to drive
comparing it to a mk5 gti is like comparing the gti to a RS250 megane a warm hatch back to the best track focused hatch on the market !! :popcornsoda:
-
Your hatchback is not the best the trophy is better :P
-
Nope, never compared a 2.slow to a MK5 GTI, why would I. You asked if they were any good and I gave you my honest opinion as a previous owner of one. Simples! :happy2:
-

matt your right , but not when your 250 has been to RS tuning for a few hours

mark your opinion was good i just dont think the car is no where near what you made out as normal cars go i think the beetle is a good one you get a well made vw that still looks fresh for focus money , might not be great mpg but if thats what your after you d buy a aygo ! so do you want to buy it or not lol
-
I like em loads mate thinks I am nuts but I will always have a soft spot for em but I prefer the aircooled ones.

Mark clearly pointed out the 2.0 was the least desirable in the lineup, that doesn't mean it's a bad car........
-
nath , is that a fair price im asking ? ive seen w reg ones for this money
-
nath , is that a fair price im asking ? ive seen w reg ones for this money
Seems a bit on the high side to me, its a waiting game at this time of year fella!
-
cheers mate , got a bit of room to move :happy2:
-
All depends on which 2.0 it is. The 8v is not a good engine but if its the 20v then much better. I driven both as we've had lots of these at work over the years.
