Title: Sideshowfreds GTI - Stereo Upgrade :-)
Post by: sideshowfred on November 19, 2011, 05:29:12 pm
After a truly awful 6 months of driving around in a Polo 6n2, i'd finally had enough of it. I was really dissapointed as i had (wrongly) assumed the quality would be on par with my old mk4 Golf, it couldn't have been further from it. Also, the fact i went through 2 gearboxes in 6 months didn't help either!!!

But anyway, the search was on for a new car. after looking at Megane 225's, Mk1 Focus Rs's and a Mk4 Golf Anniversary 1.8t, i still wasn't really feeling any of them. So I decided to test drive a MK5 GTI. I loved it straight away. So last weekend i picked up this beauty. It's done 71,000 miles, fsh, 1 owner from new etc etc.

I promised myself before I bought it that I wouldn't modify it atall, but already i'm thinking of things to do for it. Only problem is as i'm 21 insurance is a killer anyway, let alone declaring mods too!! I've decided though, as I want to do things properly to save up and not rush things. Wheels will be changed (in the summer months at least) by some BBS CH's or similar 18's (any suggestions welcome). Maybe coilovers to make it handle even better, exhaust for something that sounds even nice and maybe a remap when I get bored of it's mere 197bhp  :driver: (i've only had a PD130 engine as my most powerful before this so it's quite different!)

Also going to put some yellow lamin-x over the foglights to make it stand out a little bit. Interior wise, it's all going to stay pretty much as VW intended. I might upgrade the head-unit at some point for something I can stick my sub onto but other than that it's just a nice place to be. I'll get some better pics once i've properly cleaned it and the sun's decided to show itself.

cheers fr the comment guys.

SUB39H, i'd have them if i had the money but buying this means i gonna have to wait for wheels  :sad1:

I decided to have a look at the broken foglight today, i'd assumed the bulb had gone so didn't think the much of it. Took the grill off to find that there was no bulb in the foglight unit, infact, there was no holder or anything. I also noticed that one of the foglight brackets had snapped so it was wobbling a little bit. So I whipped the light out and rummaged around behind it to find the bulb and holder and the horn were both loose. After a quick inspection the bits that hold the bulb/holder into the light unit were snapped. So i need a whole new fog light unit  :fighting:

TBH i wasn't too fussed at this point, i could live without it for the moment. So i went to put the grill back on and couldn't screw it back in. After much confusion (and checking the other side), i found that the bracket that the screw goes into has snapped off the bumper. As if this now wasn't enough to annoy me, i found that the bumper was beggining to crack heading towards the number plate.  :fighting: :fighting: :fighting:

So basically, i need a new foglight AND bumper. And i've had to bodge the grill around the foglight to hold it in place. Other than that though i'm still really enjoying the car. Just want to get these little bits sorted as there always going to annoy me!
Title: Re: Sideshowfreds GTI - And so the mods start, small and slowly though
Post by: sideshowfred on January 29, 2012, 06:42:48 pm
I decided that as it's payday tomorrow, and I wanted to do something useful to the car, i'd buy some carbon look vinyl so I can wrap my front grill and make it easier to get the smooth look as I can't be bothered to do it properly!! This then bit me in the usual way and I thought about the other thing I could wrap. Needless to say looking at some other people's cars on here made me do the most obvious thing. I had some terrible effect stuff already in the garage so out it came and this is the result.

It took me about 30 mins and tbh it's a rubbish job. But at least I can decide if I like it enough to do it properly. Roll on tomorrow so I can start sorting the grill out :)

not a very exciting update, unless your me haha. To go with the US spec rear bumper i bought, and am still awaiting delivery of, I decided the front needed to match. As much as I like the smoothed front look so many run, a previous encounter with the police for no front plate has put me off the idea.

Cue a long search for  on a US spec front plate holder. 2 months after searching Ebay.com came up good. So i ordered this on Monday (30th Jan), and it arrived at my front door yesterday (2nd Feb). I'm astonished it's got here so quickly tbh, but it has.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FT5Freddie%2FThe_GTI%2FDSCF3462.jpg&hash=711c258b3a7b51bcd96f6607d623621ca7c2b5cf)

tomorrow i will test fit it and order some US size plates

Also my proper carbon wrap turned up on tuesday so I re-did the steering wheel to better results, and also did the ashtray and surround

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FT5Freddie%2FThe_GTI%2FDSCF3456.jpg&hash=7bc19d5a97e35f06c03622f3c627d6aab1e311ec)

i lost the clips for the ESP button though hence it's sticking out :(

So just waiting on the rear bumper at the minute and then I can actually get cracking  :driver:

Yeah, i was just looking for something better to run a US spec plate on rather than screwing it straight onto the grill which just looks stupid in my eyes. So i though i'd go down the oem route. I got impatient last night so whipped the grill of and got the drill out.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FT5Freddie%2FThe_GTI%2FDSCF3472-1.jpg&hash=c01734b035da378305773fb9c171d8c051275738)

I just used the holes that were already marked so it was nice and easy for once  The grill went back on last nigt but it was too dark to take pics so i've had to brave -6 this morning to get these   :stupid:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FT5Freddie%2FThe_GTI%2FDSCF3488edit.png&hash=2e0b47505775337ef879c5ab325a80768386c4c6)

About an hour after i'd pm'd the guy I bought my bumper off, sods law happened and I almost missed it being delivered. I had my music turned up too loud so couldn't hear the doorbell. Anyway, managed to grab the driver resulting in this being given to me

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FT5Freddie%2FThe_GTI%2FDSCF3494.jpg&hash=70d6997b6520b659d258066874bb1ea22fa6f39c)

It's a bit scratched up but what can I expect for £85 lol. Gonna give it a good clean and polish and see if I can get some of the scratches out and weather permitting will test fit it next weekend.

My plates arrived on tuesday but due to long days at work i didn't get any photo's until this morning. I've got the front plate on but am waiting for some better weather before i swap the rear bumper over. I like the look as its just a bit different to what you normally see  Excuse the poor quality phone pics

Got round to doing my rear bumper today. I have however found out my fear that it would be a different shade of black. Anyway, some pics of today's progress.

and a couple of the difference in colour  :sad1:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FT5Freddie%2FThe_GTI%2FDSCF3528.jpg&hash=ecf06dc58735a03fed1d563e8afb0ef9b2459a53)

I also found out the Rabbit valance on the back isn't quite as deep as the GTI one. So i'm now on the hunt for a proper GTI lower half as well as needing the top half sprayed up.

Yeah, something like that!! It's annoying as it means i'm going to have to pay someone to do a proper paint job. If mine was a flat colour i'd have happily had a go myself haha

Shouldn't be too bad getting that done, your paint code should be in your manual or in the boot on a sticker by the spare wheel, not sure how many different black magic metallics there are but my paint code is LC9Z and matched my car perfectly

Nice to see a different take on the front and rear looks good  :happy2:

Cheers, and yeah, my paint codes lc9z aswell. It's just my past attempts at painting metallics have never gone well. Mind you, one was a beige/gold metallic pearl and the other was a bluey green metallic pearl haha

Yes you did see Weston Favell shopping centre. It's only 5 mins from me and the old Focus car park was a good place to take some pics

I think i bought the only one they had. But they've got this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Rabbit-06-09-License-Plate-mount-base-Bracket-Front-/230632524408?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35b2c50a78 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Rabbit-06-09-License-Plate-mount-base-Bracket-Front-/230632524408?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35b2c50a78) which seems to be the same part number so might fit.

Well today I thought i'd have a go at making my rear lights a bit more like the edition 30 ones. So I whipped them off and set about tinting them. First things first though, I thought i'd spray up the reverse light red so it matched the other side.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FT5Freddie%2FThe_GTI%2FDSCF3565.jpg&hash=02662518b25e870ec3567b933033b934606d1322)

then onto the tinting

before

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FT5Freddie%2FThe_GTI%2FDSCF3567.jpg&hash=19880a8f4f409c3d43aa762ff32a69898c8cb7e7)

after 2 coats

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FT5Freddie%2FThe_GTI%2FDSCF3569.jpg&hash=259eb05dbec2eba89b2b379dd75ec7f92a9d4de8)

I decided to give it a 3rd coat as I didn't want to go overboard and they were looking good. After the third coat was dry to touch I moved them upto the front bedroom which is currently empty and has the sun on the bay windows from roughly 10am through to sunset. So a nice warm place to let the spray set.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FT5Freddie%2FThe_GTI%2FDSCF3579.jpg&hash=aad41af178b4f67dd2b3ab9aabc191d5749c184e)

I was really pleased with them at this point, and thought i'd noticed a difference in the colour. So gave them 4 hours then waxed them and stuck them back on the car

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FT5Freddie%2FThe_GTI%2FDSCF3583.jpg&hash=d8c231e496287fc35c3a313c68d15833b90d030a)

I was still really happy until i compared them to some before pics with the lights on the car and I can't tell the difference  :sad1: So a day seemingly wasted, never mind. I also did some more carbon wrapping on the interior a few weeks back

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FT5Freddie%2FThe_GTI%2FDSCF3552.jpg&hash=f0799f7176cf5d0e47ea7273f3082c01019f6608)

Definitely need to give the interior a clean now the weathers cheered up a bit!

Well after I went to GTI Spring Festival last weekend I decided it was about time I did some other little touches to the car whilst I save up for some proper stuff. First off I swapped the standard filter for a Pipercross item. It's probably made bugger all difference but at least I feel like i've now done something. Whilst doing this job I thought it's be a nice touch to paint the centre bit of the engine cover. So I whipped it off and this is the result

The colour is Bugatti 4EU which i've had kicking around for a couple of years. It's not very well done but it'll do for now.

It may be the camera angle but your pipes look to be on the extreme side of protuding?  :surprised:

I just took plenty of time with the wrapping to make sure i got it as perfect as i could.

It may be the camera angle but your pipes look to be on the extreme side of protuding?  :surprised:

I take it you mean the exhaust? It's because the lower half isn't from a GTI but from a 'Rabbit'. So it's not quite as low or wide as the normal GTI version. I will get the proper lower half sorted at some point but there quite hard to find it'd seem.

Well it's taken me a fair while fore anything more to happen with my car. After ChristmasIi had some spare cash lying about so decided to put it towards a Rieger front spoiler. Took two weeks to arrive and decided to fit it in the snow yesterday. Really pleased with how it looks though

Cheers, well my next mod arrived last night. I only bought it because my engine cover and mounting points decided to break. So I thought I ought to upgrade it whilst I had the chance  :happy2:

Been a while since much happened to this so these are the latest things. Firstly back in March i decided i was bored of the carbon wrapped badges and satin black grill. So i bought some gloss black vinyl and set to work. The badges came out really good but the grill was very poorly painted and looks awful close up but it'll do for now.

After my birthday in April I had some spare cash kicking about and decided I wanted a new gear knob. The Forge one was the best looking one I found although the price put me off a little! But I bought one anyway and 2 days in i'm not regretting it  :happy2: excuse the crappy phone pics and chewing gum wrapper

Been a while since i've posted in here as to be honest not a great deal has happened. Thought i'd just give the thread a quick update though. Main real change is the stereo that arrived last week. Admittedly it's not the best unit out there but for the £160 it cost me i'm more than happy with it. Also the sat nav seems pretty decent which was a surprise!

Other small changes are some floor mats with red edging and gti seat inserts

Was it new or second hand? general opinion of it, Pro's/Con's,
Just trying to do a bit of research on them first before deciding on one of them over a genuine unit.

was brand new and arrived quickly as it was in the uk. Opinion of it so far is that it's really good. Especially considering how much it cost in comparison to a genuine unit. it can be a bit slow to read a disc sometimes. Only real problem i've found so far is that the fit wasn't mm perfect, but tbh it's only on the corners it's a bit tight and as i said, for the money i think that's fair.

Only real issue i can see for the future is updates for the maps on the navigation part. but i'll deal with that when it comes to it and it comes up with a web address in the info bit anyway so can always try there.

Hope this helps!

Got it from this ebay shop. Paid a bit more to get one that was at a UK warehouse but thought this a safer bet as the last thing i bought from Hong Kong never turned up! http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/erisin-eu (http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/erisin-eu)

I'm debating getting one of those CD players.
What are the like? Any problems since you've had yours?
Title: Re: Sideshowfreds GTI - Stereo Upgrade :-)

no real problems so far other than very occasionally the unit will stop playing a cd for no reason. It only seems to do it on really warm days though so might just be it's getting a bit hot and cutting out to save itself. Used the sat nav to guide me a few weeks ago and was really impressed by it! Sorted out routes nice and quickly, gave plenty of warnings and re-calculated quickly too.

Radio signal seems to be the only problem, doesn't seem to search for signal when it looses it, just makes white noise and you have to adjust manually but doesn't really bother me as i only really listen to cd's anyway.

When you were spraying the lights, how did you get a perfect circle with the masking tape. Is it just a case of a steady hand?

Where did you pick up your front spitter? It looks great!!

That intake looks like a massive red snake in your engine bay. I like it, reckon some red coil packs would be a lovely little touch.
