Yup, on my way to Katate and the car felt different. Stuttering at 1500rpm in 4th then clearing with a prod of the throttle (Put this down to having an emergancy fill up of BT super) carried on and the juddring suddenly got worse and i coulddnt use any throttle without a shake, started to slow down and the engine light came on and started flashing, pulled up at some lights and LOADS of smoke started to billow from under the bonnet!!! turned the engine off straight away and got out to have a look, thick smoke coming from the left side of the engine cover, wasnt steam definalty smoke (had that burning smell) After a few mins waiting for international rescue to come and save me, noticed a fluid leak, wasnt oil though..........
Will have to wait till morning to have a better look at whats low.
Any ideas?? The engine light is supposed to tell me there is a fault in the exhaust system......
Thanks
So looking at the manual, seems to have been a mis firs causing fuel to enter the cat. Sound about right??
Ben
-
Not good, hope its nothing major mate
-
Woah that sounds bad!
Do let us know what happened.
-
....
That's seriously depressing - I bet your heart sunk.
Does sound like misfiring and then the rest but your dealer will be able to diagnose what happened.
-
Can you believe that my warranty ran out on Saturday
If the cat is knackered then it could mean a Miltek! (trying to look on the bright side)
If its really bad news then i will try and get the dealers to help with the cost.......
Do you think it could be anything to do with the fuel??
-
have you checked your oil and your coolant

Definatly burning, i can still smell it now....... and it was coming from under the engine cover (left side) but none came out when i took off the oil cap.

Ouch!!
Unfortunately it sounds like it may cost a bob or two.
Left hand side - it could be turbo / zorst related.
Hope you get it fixed soon

Ben that really does suck mate!!
It probably seemed a lot worse than it is, especially when there's smoke involved! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, but if there is any issues with VW not covering it let me know as I have contact's within VW  :happy2:
-
Keep us informed Ben hopefully it is not as bad as it seems.
We are all wating for good news.

What an amazing pic - The cars look like toys at first!
-
If it's what I think it is then it's reasonably cheap.
I think you've had a coil pack burn out, it may mean having to replace another one too as they seem to go in pairs as for some reason a failing one stresses another.
I wouldn't drive it though.

Thats what i was thinking, it happened on my 1st Gti one week into ownership.
Did the car sound like it was misfiring ( like a suburu flat four ! ).
Hopefully a week out of warrenty the dealer should do a goodwill act.
hope its nothing major fella.
not sure about the fluid leak though !? ?

Happened to one of the guys with an Octy RS, luckily he was running an EVOMS without the engine cover at the time and used the Fire Extinguisher he also carried to put the 'flames' out.

As has already been said, i'd be awazed if VW didn't honour it. Especially as it was only serviced recently.. :happy2:
-
Scary Pics there Phil :surprised: :surprised:
That would bring me to  if that happened to me! :scared:
-
the fact that you said you had it serviced worries me ?
who serviced your car ? Leicester VW ?
My coil packs caused a juddering/misfiring and the car sounded like a suburu flat four, when hooked to a diagnostics machine the car only said it had a misfire/ignition problem.
When the VW breakdown reeovery technician came he looked at the engine bay and immeaditaly noticed the problem,
THE COIL PACK WAS 1/2mm upwards, ie not fitted correctly ! This caused 2 coilpacks 2 fail, lucky it wasn't worse.
The thing was I just had the car serviced and it was a week old in my hands !!!! Leicester VW did the servicing, the tech looked at the engine bay and checked the plugs and coils, he said the car hasn't been serviced for atleast 5 months !!!
Leicester VW suck balls. :angry015:
-
Hope it does turn out to be the coilpacks and not anything more serious. Good luck mate, hope all goes well :happy2:

Not what i need to hear!!!! Its being collected in about an hour so we will see what happens later. this has been a s**t week, need the front screen replacing as its goning to fail the MOT that is tomorrow too... This is hurting my pockets
Where in leicester are you E30M3
-
Ben im near Houghton on the Hill, but am at other places in Leicester sometimes, most of the time however im in Lutterworth or London.
You say you car was serviced 8 weeks ago, if it is a coilpack, ask was it not possible to spot the fault at service?
I hope the dealer sorts you and looks after you under goodwill.
Also i wouldn't worry too much, i think the service dept now at Leicester VW is alot better than before, but i would not touch Leicestr VW's sales dept across the road. Hopefully Ben it should be cheap fix with no major worries or cost ! :)
I always use Arthur prince now for any work, maybe far and there courtesy cars are a bit long, but they have proper customer service and qaulity work.
about the Window , you can get it replaced on your insurance for whatever the windowscreen excess is, mines was £50 direct line.
If your not sure ring your insurance company and tell them where an you get your windscreen fixed .
again Ben hope it all goes well with minimum of hassle and cost.
Raj.

I wouldn't think it would be seen at service and wouldn't have been damaged as a result of service unless the plugs were changed.
They are simply coils that can, and do, break down and fail. When they fail they can draw a lot of current which is what causes the small fires.
As the pics that Steve posted show, if the coil manages to burn enough to catch the engine cover then that's when your problems will start.
-
As the pics that Steve posted show, if the coil manages to burn enough to catch the engine cover then that's when your problems will start.
....So changing the stock plastic engine cover (with fat flammable panel filter inside!) to one such as the aluminium EVOMS one might just reduce the spread of a coilpack fire?

Yes it would Red but it is very rare for that to happen, thats like saying if i wrap my fuel tank in kevlar will this reduce explosions. :chicken:

As soon as the pics came up, there should have been a warning sign. Some of us might be very upset at seeing a burnt GTI!

Any news yet?
-
Just got the call from VW. It was the coil pack and they are do the work under warranty!!!!!!!!
Very chuffed although it will be tomorrow before i get the car back...
All in all not too bad, ive been stressing about what else went wrong and could see a bill of 1K coming my way......
Thanks for the info though guys, i mentioned that it sounded like the coilpack and mentioned that there seems to be lots of problems with this and it seemed to make them pay attention to what i said.

Holy crap, just seen those nasty pics....
I had a couple of coil packs go on my mk4 1.8T but never thought that could happen. Is this possibly catching fire a mk5 trait a general risk with coillies?
Glad it was a simple fix and free!
-
Glad to hear the good news and while on the topic of flavoured cider, has anyone tried Jacques? That's really nice stuff that, tastes like fizzy ribena :happy2: :jumpmove:
-
not many reports of mk5's catching fire, the one i posted the pics of, i bought their ed30 off them, VW as a good will gesture gave them the ed30 because of the fire in that white GTi photo'd.
I wouldnt worry.

Well i knew it was too good to be true!! Driving home last night and the engine light came on flashing and also the tyre pressure light came on. All accompanied by a mis fire !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not happy!
Called VW this morning and they diddnt seem to surprised and just said "better get it down to us so we can take a look" Woulddnt say if the other 3 OK coilpacks were checked when number 2 was replaced. So thats another £50 lost on getting the car there and half a days pay.....this is getting VERY annoying!! Im asking them to replace all of the coilpacks this time
pissed off.
-
Thats a bummer, but as you say it was to good to be true. :chicken:
-
Thats not good at all. On the other hand be happy they not replacing the entire engine though like we had with another member a while ago. . . Good luck this time
-
oh my god! sometimes the dealers really dont know whats best for them?
shall we let them into a little secret??..................
.....the cheaper way to do it, is to spend more time and effort the FIRST time round! its easier and will cost them less! MONKEYS!!
-
hmm, not good, has anyone with an 08 car had these issues?
-
Sorry to hear this matey, hope it all gets sorted :happy2:
-
Thats not good at all. On the other hand be happy they not replacing the entire engine though like we had with another member a while ago. . . Good luck this time
At least i would know its not going to go wrong anytime soon. I cant afford to spend £50 having my car delivered to the dealers each tiome a coil pack goes wrong......
Lets hope they do the right thing!! Fingers crossed all please!!
-

Establishing which coilpack has failed is, I'm told, a tricky process. The approach of trying one at a time step by step is not unreasonable. Not necessarily so convenient for the customer though, I grant you.
-
VW just called, to say, i love you. NO they diddnt, they called to say that coil pack number 1 has now failed and will NOT be covered under warranty. They haver also advised that i pay to replace coilpacks 3 and 4 as they are likely to fail due to the extra load / stress the failure of number 2 and now number 1 packs has put through them. Can you effin believe it!!!!
called VW customer services and explained my dissatisfaction and they will "look into the case and give a decission within 24 - 48 hrs (meaning that i am without a car till Monday as they do not ahve any curtesy cars available) Thsi is a Joke, they know the problem is caused by a fault that was within warranty, fixed that problme without any advise that this could happen again and now want me to pay £190 to ahve 3 coilpacks replaced.
this is not what i expect from a VW and in now way can you call this customer service more like customer disservice!!!!!
Anyone else had this problem?? Any suggestions how i can get the to pay for what i believe is a known (and avoidable) problem?
Ben
-
Was your car ok for a while when you got it back from them or was the misfire there straight away.
-
....
Why isn't coil pack #1 not covered under warranty?
-
I'd buy the replacement for the defective one for now and maybe one other as a spare to get yourself mobile and wait for VW to come back to you.
Oh and -
If it's what I think it is then it's reasonably cheap.
I think you've had a coil pack burn out, it may mean having to replace another one too as they seem to go in pairs as for some reason a failing one stresses another.
I wouldn't drive it though.

this sounds mad but you can smell them !!!!! i had one go on my mk 1 octavia only drove with it for about a mile ,( was close to dealers ) but i can easy see why if you drove any further they can catch fire , its an experiance worth having cause if one went on me now i would know what it was , only thing in the gti cant get stupid engine cover off

Would a Naturally Aspirated 3.2 litre Mitsubishi pajero have a coil pack?
If so... What smell does a coil pack give off when it starts going screwy?
Answers soon would be great. Sorry for the off topic.

Sorry to hear this Mike !
Leicester VW stilll seems the SAME then, doing crap work !
took my Ed30 in last week for the DSG gearchanging problem, they said all fine ! Next day at Arthur Prince, DSG mechatronics need changing as does 2 other things ! :ashamed: :angry015:

Why isn't coil pack #1 not covered under warranty?
Because this has happen out side of the warranty ( by just 9 days) They evebn admitted to knowing that the others would probably fail!! Anyway, ive asked then to change the remaining 2 coils as i dont want this to go wrong again. VW Customer services have said that they are putting 50% towards the bill.....
-
Thats a good result all in all you cant really argue considering it all happened outside the warranty
Its just a pity it didnt all get sorted first visit.
-
Not a bad result in the end. Try and forget about this and get back in your GTI and enjoy it! :happy2:

Technically, they don't have to pay anything at all - The warranty period has expired.

I agree entirely with you Robin, maybe because I deal with the likes of VW as suppliers my expectations are higher. Not that they should be, if they hand an ounce of customer loyalty this issue should have been dealt with FOC! IMHO :happy2:

In the end i am happy with the result, although in a perfect world it would ahve all been done under warranty. My grievance was the fact that they advised me to replace the remaining coils only when i was footing the bill and after i ahve another problem. If, when the car was originaly in the dealers, they advised me to replace the remaing 3 units with a 50% donation then i would have been very happy, but "se la vie"
Thanks for the help / info & links guys. A perfect example of how the internet helps all :grouphug:
