Here we go... this is StevenW007s front badge.
You'll need.
1 VW badge
1 Strong knife
1 Very sharpe knife
1 Hair dryer (or gas hob if your brave)
1 piece of vinyl wrap in your choice of colour.

First we need to detach the front. With a strong knife work between the chromed plastic and backing to prise the front away from the back.

You will get to the last one and it will be stiff. What you need to do now is flip the badge over and unclip the 2 clips in the centre of the badge.

Once you have done this the last clip around the edge will be easy to lift.

Get a suitable amount of wrap, in your preferred colour.

5 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/richwigley/6376585839/) by Rich Wigley (http://www.flickr.com/people/richwigley/), on Flickr
Carfully place it on the badge and get rid of any air bubbles.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm7.staticflickr.com%2F6211%2F6376586521_5708ac72fe_z.jpg&hash=bf09183bd1bf1272f59269eb82bba6bb9841f4b4) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/richwigley/6376586521/)

Now, gently heat the edge of the wrap so it goes soft and ease the wrap over the edges of the chrome badge.

Trim edge of badge to leave about 1cm surplus

Make incisions from the corners to the middle of each hole. Fold the wrap back over. Use a heat source to soften the wrap to make it easier.

Should end up looking like this. Getting the bit between the V and the W and around the edge of the whole badge to stick is a pain :fighting:

Press the wrapped VW badge back onto its backing.

Looks great, just painted mine instead! :happy2:

I painted my old one but I found that it just got stoned chipped really bad. Mines been wrapped for 25000 miles and looks as good as it did the day I wrapped it.
Of course you can buy a black badge but DIY is more fun!

All shall be revealed in due course. :-)

^
In all seriousness, very clean job you did. I did my prototype front badge carbon wrap in such a rush before that I didn't even take it out the rear clip casing :ashamed:
It was black anyway so nothing lost :rolleye:
-
Nice guide Rich :congrats: feel like i cheated now by just buying a black one and putting it on today :signLOL:

Does increases depend on colour used?
Great guide and looks a spot on job. May try this on rear badge :happy2:
-
Yes it does.
Matt black ~10bhp
Gloss black ~8bhp
Pink -20bhp
Other colours ~5bhp
-
I think i will be having a pink one then

Cool, great write up mate! Shouldve wrapped mine, but bought a brand new non white wormed one instead haha!

Tempted to do mine, but not sure whether it would look okay or not on black car. Looks great on red/white ones.

Ebay my friend :happy2:

Rich, between steps 10-11, did you trim the edges further or just fold the rest of the wrap around?

Yes luke... you trim just enough off so that it can be folded back, but not so much so that it won't stick. Thats the hardest part. :happy2:
-
Is it possible to do this without breaking every single silver plastic clip holding the 2 badges together, and also not have at least some of the silver of the badge showing once you have wrapped in between the letters?
If so, I guess I'll be sending a new badge to someone that can do it for me lol. As I just wrote off two attempts.
Edit: Just looked at the guide again and i can see that the Mk5 front badge is only a few mm thick. The Polo 6R badge is very thick and very 3d. It makes it so difficult to do. Just wasted an hour earlier doing this with 2 attempts. Grrrrr!!!
-
Boooooooo fail!
-
Looks so easy to do on a golf badge as well. :(
-
Good write up mate, just done my front and rear VW emblems and am very pleased, thank you for instructions. Just ordered a load of Brushed Alu effect vinyl for interior bits, bring it on! :happy2:
-
looks easy enough :happy2: well the guide makes it look easy
just need to order some vinyl now
-
Nice guide, cheers, bit of a pain I'm the arse the v and w gap!
