Title: What replacement OEM unit?
Post by: screech on November 23, 2011, 11:19:52 pm
Hey guys,

Pick up my mk5 on sunday, and one of the first things i want to do is change the headunit to something a bit better, im thinking a touchscreen one that can have ipod/iphone control?
From reading previous posts around im guessing the unit iv got is an RCD300..?

Its in a 2008 GT sport TDI 170 if thats any help..?

Any advice?

cheers

Yep the rcd300 was fitted as standard and is a particularlly lousy head couples with equally lousy front door speakers. Low and high only with no mids. I would suggest you consider a plan for the whole system. I upgraded by door speakers with the Vw upgrade pack which was a total waste of time and money.

The rns510 Isthe daddy if you want nav or just a lot of things to play with and upgrade in the future?  It has the best support and tinker optoons  The rcd 510 If you don't. I would avoid Chinese units with your life.

Any recommendations on replacement door speakers?

Also rcd/rns510 is 4 x 20w.  Most aftermarket units are 4 x 50w.  Can you still get reasonable sound quality from head unit power alone?

That's great thanks for the replies.

Il keep a look out on eBay etc. the cheap copies are a definite no no for me!!

I do plan on upgrading the whole system eventually, once I get it I can make a good plan for the doors! Watch this space!!

Cheers.
