Title: Mk6 leave you cold?
Post by: Mk5 GTian on November 24, 2011, 07:37:35 pm
Seen quite a lot of these on the road now, and I have to say, they're not as good looking IMHO. It doesn't look as special.

I also got to drive one the other day. It felt a little bit quicker than my Mk5, but I didnt feel as connected to the road. It's not as raw, if you know what I mean.

I have read really good reviews on the Ed35 though, presumably due to the use of the MK5 / Ed30 / Mk6 R engine.

I'd be really interested to hear what others think.

i love everything about them personally, tho the car of choice would be the Ed35 for the engine!

I have to agree with the op. If I had the choice between my ED30 or an ED35 I would choose my ED30 everytime. I just think it looks better , a real ''drivers'' car  :driver:

Then you see a Golf R, and then you think I'd rather fancy one of them!

I would take a MK6 tomorrow over my Ed30.

Really like the look of them.

I would defo only keep it at Stage 1 too.

Far to many issues further up the Mod table.

I had a Mk6 as a courtesy car and it felt really cramped inside!

I had a golf r as a courtesy car for the day, was quicker than my old r I had at the time but just felt boring, soft and not connected to the road. I think my mk5 Gti is a better drivers car. R sounds nice when changing gear tho :o)

I was in a new mk6 the other day, interior was rattly (especially in the back) and overall felt cheaper than the mk5.

I really like them, I think its my constant need for the latest model which makes them so popular with me.

The ED30 is still a fantastic looking car. The MK6 doesn't seem to be as good value as what the MK5 was.

Example..I paid 22.5k for a brand new ED30 and at work we have a second hand GTD (11 plate with 11k miles) for 22.5k

I find them so dull I sold my first mk6 GTI and bought another!!
They're a stupidly expensive (as are all half decent new cars now) but very accomplished product. Although the similarities of chassis and size are far closer, a mk5 and mk6 compare a little like a mk1 and mk2 GTI.

Yeah, the R looks better (to most people's eyes, some people prefer the GTI), but is a lot more expensive to buy and run. So it depends on how you use the car really. Mine is just a family car so mods will be kept to a minimum and I don't need 4wd.
The K04 engined car is going to be the modders choice, as ever, and actually offers good value for money over a new standard GTI but the 'normal' mk6 GTI is a very good everyday allrounder.
It looks good in the right colour with the right spec (LED tail lamps make a big difference and xenons make the front end look bang up to date), has an amazing spread of options if you don't mind flushing thousands of quid down the bog come re-sale time and has a very mature feel to it. It delivers the goods without you really noticing sometimes, so I can sympathise with the 'cold'ness a little. Once you jump into another car you appreciate what the GTI can do with its blend of talents. I drive vans and trucks a fair bit so it feels very refined to me!!

I agree with the sentiment that on first acquaintance the inside seems a bit more claustrophobic. It is all black plastic and seems very dark until you get familiar with it. The dash is a much nicer shape than the mk5 one. The other bits of trim are just 'different'. But it does feel more expensive until you really look closely.

Both of mine have been treated to stage 1 software. The first one had REVO and the second has been given the Bluefin treatment as I just fancied a different angle on this one to compare. The engine is good, it sounds and goes a bit better than the mk5 unit & is quite a bit better on fuel.

I owned two mk5s previously (and at least one example of every Golf from a mk1 GTI, several mk2s, a couple of mk3 VR6s and even a mk4 1.8t and it's Cupra sibling). The mk6 GTI reminds me a lot of my mk2s; just not as well engineered!!
Like the mk2, the first time you test drive one it leaves you a bit underwhelmed. But for some reason you go back and have another go; then the subtleties hit you bit by bit. Then the cost hits you with a wallop!!

I do like the mk6 but could never justify to myself £26k for a new one! early used are starting to come down to £17/18k at main dealers, might consider when they hit £15/16k.

I like the front end styling and I agree the led lights brighten up the slightly bland rear end, although i like the exhaust positioning.

Good range of options available but the trouble with the more options there are, the more you want! making getting a used one with the options you want harder work or more of a compromise on whats available, or spend a fortune on retro fitting.

im not keen on the exhaust positions on the mk6, i had been looking at cars around the 18k mark and decided there was better cars but when my brother put his mk5  up for sale at 9k i thought why waste money its a lovley car for the money and now i have it im starting to love it,  however the new R really does float my boat , ive not driven one but would really fancy one in a few years

I owned a mk5 GTI for 5 years and have owned a mk6 GTI for a year and a half. Initially the mk6 seemed quieter but as soon as it got a few miles on it, it gets louder to similar levels as the mk5 is (I also drive a the mk5 from time to time). Don't feel much if any different to drive to me but then again same chassis they probably not alot in it apart from a few tweeks with ratings of anti-roll bars/springs/dampers. If anything the 6 seems more planted on its harder standard suspension over the 5. Cars fitted with ACC imo do seem to screw up the steering feel/weight.
Interior wise both my 5 & 6 had a sunroof and cloth interior and so are light and airy enough for me and no reall difference to me between them. I do find both 5 & 6 without, ie with dark leather and no sunroof a bit coal mine feeling. As for looks its a personal thing but i feel the 6 fits in with previous generations of GTI better than the 5 did but thats just a personal point of view.
As for rattles and squeeks both 5 & 6 when new suffered. I think i spent most of 2005-2010 on tyresmoke with RedRobin telling owners how to fix their rattles and squeeks on the 5. Then again on another forum for the 6 since then... But its the same with others, many owners have had non some owners have suffered badly. Some not so bad. I just am simply unlucky.....
Mine are/were simply daily driver so im not comparing modded or future modifications or power as they were bought as good standard alrounders.
