Title: Heated Screen Group Buy - MKV Golf
Post by: malaroo978 on December 02, 2011, 11:29:35 am
Hey everyone, I've been looking into getting a heated windscreen fitted to the MKV golf. Obviously not an option but companies can make them.

I've been missing a heated windscreen as I've just changed from a Focus with a heated windscreen to the Golf GT Sport. I love the golf so much more! But it doesnt stop me from missing the heated windscreen. It is so useful, it clears misting and ice so much quicker than A/C does and in my opinion safer as you get quick clearing when you need it.

Anyway, I've had a response from a company I contacted ( http://www.heatedwindscreen.com/ ) saying they have previously made heated windscreens for the MKV golf but for the german market. They will be able to make some for £205 + VAT (£246) for a minimum run of 5 although I'm sure if we got more numbers it could be less. There is a lead time of 7-12 weeks for production so unfortunately it does mean that we wouldn't have it in time for this winter. But if we looked for getting it all ordered and sorted for next summer then we could have them in time for the next winter.

Before looking into it further I want to see if I could at least get the minimum number of people then look more into sorting out a garage that would fit and wire them in (maybe somewhere central for a meet and get more discount on fitting)

So I'm really hoping some of you guys are interested! Please let me know if you are and I'll compile a list. The more we can get the cheaper it will be I'm sure.

If you havn't tried a heated screen before I can assure you they are so much easier to use than normal clearing and its definitely a must have if you use your car a lot in the winter!

Cheers all, James

I have had a screen made from them before and it was great.  Well worth the money.  Fully cleared in around 15 secs and fairly straighforward to wire too.

I'd be interested, but would like more info too re top tint etc.

I need a new screen anyway, so this must be worth a thought. How much is a normal one?

I'm sure one of the higher spec cars has the heated windscreen?? Not in the golf but maybe passat or something, wiring should be straight forward and i'm sure we can find a proper vw button to go in the center dash.

I'm very interested...need a large enough stone to hit the screen  :signLOL:

I'd definitely be interested although would want the wiring - route, switchgear and connections clearly explained and illustrated, preferably on a demonstrator we could all see.
One problem I presume has not been overlooked; that of the auto headlights and rain sensors. Would the tiny filaments in the heated screen confuse this system?
I've an Edition 30. Would the correct tint colour green be available?
Thanks

The auto rain/light sensor would not be a problem, I had it on my focus st and had the auto sensor in that.

A few other manufacturers have heated front screens, i was in a mini the other day that had one, and a Passat in the dealers i wne in the other day had one.

Heated screen on my CR 170 Elegance Yeti - £215 option, bargain!

(also available on Superb, but not Octavia!)

You can see the elements in certain light conditions but it's not a problem - clears screen VERY quickly.

I'd buy it again every time!

I think Ford did have an exclusive patent but presume that has expired or they are allowing others to use the tech under license.

At this time of year I can't think of a more genius invention to have on your car but I'm not going to register formal interest in this GB.

Hi Guys sorry I'm just replying. Havnt got notifications switched on so didnt realise anyone had replied!

Glad you guys are liking the idea, other places I posted up about it havnt really been interested

Anyway to answer a few questions (from what I know at the moment)

As for wiring, it would be wired directly into the 12V battery with a switch in the dash (as someone mentioned, I'm sure we could find a button or get one made to fit in behind the gearstick)

The Passat does have a heated screen available (dont know why they dont do it in the Golf?!) and others as mentioned by members, obviously no longer just Ford! So there will be some bits and pieces from VAG cars to help wire it up with an OEM look (which is what I want too!)

I think it might have to be fittet somewhere else though (as mentioned if we could get somewhere to do a deal then possibly even cheaped but I'll ask the supplier if he knows anywhere or if they can do it) and I'm sure the auto sensor can be worked in somehow (I want to keep mine!)

As for colour tinting, I'm sure they could do some colour alterations to the glass. I will try and get some more details regarding what they have done previously for the MKV (did a batch for the german market)

Cheers for the interest! Keep it coming!  :happy2:

Trying to get more info at the moment. Another supplier possibility is uroglas (http://www.uroglas.com/) who I'm waiting for a price from but says the minimum order is 25  :surprised: but I'll see what price they can come back with :)

I can appreciate that there are no current examples but hopefully if we can get enough people together someone might be willing to supply a demo!  I'll keep getting the info, but please keep showing your interest as I need to show the suppliers that we want it!

Great idea !!

I'd suggest connecting it just to the heated rear view window.
Easiest way without huge compromise and no additional knobs
necessary.

Hi guys, I'm just going to contact the guy again. He says the screens are the same as OEM except heated (I'll ask about tints). It will need wiring up via 2 relays and a dash switch (as mentioned maybe into the rear screen heater to keep costs down, although I did find these... http://carstyle4you.com/index.php?cPath=16_22_33_47 lol)

What exactly do people mean by the green and blue tint? I.e. is it the whole screen or is it a strip at the top?

LOL,

http://carstyle4you.com/popup_image.php?pID=306.jpg

The colour of the glass on GTi's are blue tinted where as non GTi's are green so some members will need green screens and some blue.
Green with a blue top tint would look  :happy2:

Sadly german GTIs from 2006 on only have the green tint
as VW thought they need to save some money.
The R32 still had blue tint till the end of production.

Heard back from the guy again, he's probably thinking I'm a huge pain in the ass after all my questions!

Anyway, the screens as provided in an OEM Green tint (no blue available from what I can tell). The system could be wired into the rear switch but it would need to be used to activate the relays "as the switch would not be man enough"!

For the people with the sensor (like me!) it would apparently be an additional £13 per screen. Not sure why but I'll find out. I'll ask about leon screens but may be best to email him yourself (as you will need 5+ and I'm sure they'll be loads of people on SCN)

If we need to put down deposits to further this are people willing? Pending more info and items needed and approximate fitting cost obviously. Hopefully after christmas too!

Right, I'm going to make a list of interest. I want definites and maybes please (definite being willing to put a deposit down)

Definite:
1) Me

Maybe:
1)Kregiel
2)Stevenebm
3)TonyZed
4)mortygttdi
5)galaxie500
6)JoeDarKa
7)blackmagic
8)big al
9)G-Lader
10)Comms

If I've missed anyone/you dont want to be on a maybe list/you want to be moved to the definite list then please let me know. We've got more than enough for an order though!

To sum up, £246 for the screen (comes in green tint, no blue option sorry) + £13 for those with sensors. It will need to be wired into the 12v battery via 2 relays which could be activated using the rear heated screen button (or you could buy another stand alone button but more £££)
The lead time is 7-12 weeks from ordering and fitting can be done by a windscreen fitter and needs to be wired in by an automotive electrician (unless you are handy and can do it yourself) delivery £60 + VAT for all screens to one location.

Lets not miss out on getting this! If we can get the minimum of 5 orders maybe we can showcase ours to the rest and they may be more tempted in the future :)

Hi Guys,

Thanks to malaroo978 for organising this initiative!

In terms of payments would paypal be an option here? If not I think for our all peace of mind could one of admins or a senior member of the forum take a lead along with malaroo978 on this one?
Maybe I am a bit paranoid but since it's a public forum I think for all our sake it would be reasonable before any of us make any payment.

Also malaroo978 can we get more details regarding the supplier?

I welcome all your thoughts
Paul

Hey guys, I'd be more than willing (and grateful) for any help. I'm not a particularly hands on person so I'll definitely be needing to find someone to fit the windscreen and wire it in for me. Where to do this and how much this will be... I dont know. Any suggestions?!

As for the actual supply of the glass it would be £60 + VAT for delivery of all windscreens to ONE location. Not particularly helpful since we're all probably from different parts of the country. I can find out how much individual postage will be but probably not cheap.

Maybe the best way is to find a central location with a garage willing to take delivery and fit and wire up all our screens for us. Saves on postage and will surely save on fitting (although depends on where people are from as distances may be huge!) but again, I dont know anywhere so any suggestions welcome.

As for payment for the screens, it would be a deposit until the glass is at the location for delivery. I'd be more than happy for someone else to take on receiving/handling the money. Over on SCN.net the way they managed to get a group buy for the screens organised was through one of the site sponsors who was also a trader. He took all deposits and ordered the screens. Then final payments were made when they were shipped. Not sure if there are any traders out there willing?!

If someone took on a stock of 5 screens say and we gave them deposits and pay upon receiving them then that may work out best.

As for details on the supplier, they have been mentioned by a couple of people and are meant to be decent quality (anyone who has had one have any pics?) The link is: http://www.heatedwindscreen.com/index.html
And he sells plenty of other screens on a regular basis to other car owners.

Other than that I'm as much in the dark! So I'm hoping for some help going forward in finding a place for fitting and a means of mass payment (failing that we could indiviually pay the supplier)

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks, James

Hey guys, sorry that no blue tint is available :( But for those still interested in Green... Sign up! Need some more definites with your location then I can look at central location to try and get fitting. The windscreen supplier is in the midlands (Tamworth) so if people were happy I could look around the midlands (maybe in the middle of everyone unless some are from the far reaches of the country?)

I just want to get together a couple of quotes for fitting so we can get this rolling.

I've asked about individual delivery and I'll let you know what the response is :) people will have to sort out installation etc. but its exactly the same to install as a standard windscreen (apparently) although I'm not sure where the wires come through.

Hey Jussa, sorry I didnt reply earlier on. I havn't asked him specifically but again much the same as with the leon it would have to be its own group buy (which again im sure wouldnt be too hard with the amount of A3 owners there are out there!) The 5+ isnt for any order from them, its for something which is a bespoke order so they do a run of 5 of the same type of screen to make it worth there while. So for example they couldnt do 2 MKV Golf, 2 leon and 1 S3 screen unfortunately :( although it would make it a lot easier!

Best to contact the guy yourself and have a chat :)

Title: Re: Heated Screen Group Buy - MKV Golf
Post by: malaroo978 on December 12, 2011, 01:20:06 pm
Hey guys, bit of an update from the other possible supplier. Problem with this one is that it needs 25+ orders and all have to be same spec (i.e. all green with sensor) They can source blue screens but not heated (green are only with heated) and the price is £181 + VAT for basic green without sensor (but only adds a bit more for sensor) and delivery for all to one UK free or £50 +VAT to individual addresses.

For what we want I think the original supplier will be better as we can get away with 5+ orders for the green heated with sensors and works out about the same price. I'll email to discuss fitting but doubt they will be able to offer but worth the question.

What are peoples feelings here? Approx £270 per screen delivered to one location or £310 delivered to individual locations. Then fitting + wiring costs on top.

The Skoda Superb talks of a heated windscreen as an option.

And very good it is too  :happy2:

FYI, heatedwindscreens.com (the 1st supplier contacted) is owned and run by Ricky Evans, who developed these many years ago for use in rally cars, I know of several people who have used his screen without any bother, Ricky is also a top bloke! (and can certainly 'pedal' a FWD rally car  :jumping: )

The extra £13 for the sensor mount is because these are bonded onto the screen like your OE one.

Finally Ricky also owns Tamworth Mobile Windscreens so he would be the ideal person IMO to fit the screen for you and would remove the possability of the screen getting broken 'in transit' by the courier company :happy2:

The wiring looms on the OE screens are bonded to the bottom corners of the screen  :happy2:

For the benefit of the whole group buy, would you mind saying how much to fit and wire inc. Sensor etc? Is be willing to make the journey if you could fit for a reasonable price. Another auto electrician mentioned possible complications with can bus?

I will have a look into a switch first and get some prices together.  There won't be any can bus issues as it will be on a separate wiring loom to the car.
