Hi all, after getting my car back from the vw body shop for rusty wing warranty and coil packs replaced under the recall i have noticed a squeak when starting the car in cold mornings, i haven't had the car for a month so wasnt too cold when i last had it, i cant imagine it being anything to do with coil packs anyway, but it sounds like its coming from the cambelt area, i had a little search and it looks as if its quite common, my problem is the car is an 05 plate with 72k on the clock, so it wouldnt be covered under warranty, But the belt was only changed 14k ago, anyone have any other ideas? and do i have anything to stand on against VW?

VW offer a 2 year guarantee on any parts fitted so I'd first try that approach but it will depend on which part is causing the squeak, mine was due to a failed water pump bearing so VW may try and wriggle out of doing it FOC if they feel that it is not down to any of the parts they replaced during the cambelt change..
If you have a VW FSH that will help enormously in getting some goodwill payment from VW, first port of call would be my dealer to have a chat to the warranty manager to discuss your options :happy2:

It has full vw service history up untill the garage i bought it off, who serviced it before i bought it as it was due, i'll check how long ago it was done.

If the belt was done at VW then try and find out via the dialogue service system whether the waterpump and tensioner rollers were replaced along with the cambelt as it is these parts which cause the noise, if so and if under 2 years it should strengthen your case for repair under the parts warranty :smiley:

It was done at vw thankfully, will check my book on my lunch break and ring them!

Just phoned the dealer that done it, the waterpump, cambelt and tensioner were all done, they are faxing me the invoice.
Would i just speak to the service department or will they have a warranty person there to speak to?
Its Heritage Bristol if that makes any difference to staff!

Most dealerships will have a warranty manager so pop in and ask to have a chat with him, seems that all the known causes of this noise have already been changed so I'd defo be pushing for a claim under the warranty on the parts, only exclusion to this I believe is when the job has been done under the original warranty, in this case the usual 2 year warranty doesn't exist and any guarantee runs out with the factory warranty..
So as long as the job was paid for rather than a warranty claim you have a good case imo :happy2:

Just spoke to them, i will have to pay the initial £90 diagnosis charge, if it is the part at fault i will get the money for diagnosis back and then the part willb e replaced, i also asked if the camelt will be done as well and he said he thinks they have to, does this sound about right?

Whats the odds of them saying its not the belt, charging you for something else and sortingt he belt at same time if it is that

Im going to leave it in work overnight 1 night these week and let 1 of our master techs take a look in the morning so i can go in knowing the fault already

Ultimately i had to do the same with mine @ VW, left it with them overnight so they could hear the noise from cold, tbh they didnt seem surprised by the budgie noise under the bonnet as it's quite a common fault, fingers crossed for a good result for you mate :happy2:

I started the car today without the auxillery belt today to eliminate that, our master tech said its definately coming from the cambelt area, dropped it to my local vw this evening, hopefully it all goes well! Everything was replaced and i have a copy of the invoice so lets hope they do the job!

Did you fix it? I get a high pitched noise from cold that rises in line with the RPM. Had cambelt done 6k ago

It doesnt really rise with the revs, seems to die off, will find out tomorrow though, yours sounds auxillery to be honest, my 306 was a nightmare for it

Does it sound like a Budgie chirping? Mine did and he even had a name, it was Dave btw... :grin:

Mine sounds like Budgie chipring until its warmed up (about 2 mins) then all is quiet

Thats what mine does, only in cold though, definately coming from cambelt area on mine though, lets just hope they dont worm out of it because i dont have £90 at the moment :signLOL:

Just had a call from vw, the water pump has gone which is warranty, but the tensioner was tensioned the wrong way so it needs a new belt and tensioner, so really the previous garage should be paying for this?

Just been speaking to my dad, he owns his own garage, he thinks they are trying to get a bit of money out of me, he said if you tension the belt the wrong way it would be touching the cover, are they trying to have me over here then?

VW are now saying its not warranty and i am liable to pay, my options are pay for a cabelt change or pay for them to put used parts back on, my arguements is that they stripped it without my authority, and did not take any photos of the over tensioned belt, they also told me 4 different stories about the tensioner, if they had phoned to gain authority from me i could have turned around and said no thats ok i'll pay the £90 diag charge and take it to the previous dealer to rectify, anyone have any advice on where i can go with this?
