Title: Best wheel sealant/wax?
Post by: rich83 on December 12, 2011, 04:34:37 pm
What do people view as the best? Poorboys wheel sealant? or will my collinite 476 work just as well?

Rich

I use both - 2 coats of Poorboys, followed by 2 coats of Collinte 476s.

You'd benefit from using a wax on top of the sealant.

Just been recommended that Gtechnics stuff. Looks a good product, pricey though.

I thought Poorboys was poor, I gave it away, easy on / off but not that good on durability.

Swissvax Autobahn used to be my fave, again easy on / off, good durability, bit pricey but worth it and the little pot seems to last for ages.

Currently using the Gteqnic stuff so I`ll see how that fares up against the winter   :xmassmiley:

6 coats deserves some form of award!

My hands and fingers were done after the below............

I gave mine 3 coats of PB and then two coats of DJ Purple Haze and that seems to be working fine with 60 miles per day on the M1 and just mitt/water clean at the weekends.

Looking shiny as hell.......................

I like PB for ease of use but you're right in terms of durability. 3 months is the max that I can get.

Gtechniq stuff is supposed to be good.

How do you guys measure the durability of these products?

 :signLOL: 2am, good effort!!

I guess when they don't clean up easily after a quick wipe down with water/shampoo and a mitt then they need doing again. First time I've sealed and waxed wheels so I'm waiting to see myself.

In terms of all out performance, your going to struggle to beat Gtechniq. They need to be absolutely spotless plus you'd need to hand polish then IPA wipedown after doing all your cleaning. thats just standard practise for any Gtech product.

The others mentioned won't last half as long. Ive gotta be brutally honest, i really don't like PB wheel sealant, i just don't think its anywhere near as robust enough for areas such as wheels.

With Gtechniq C5 you can comfortably not wash the wheels for 2 months and still clean them up like new with just shampoo.

Maxitrol mentioned earlier he uses bilberry and they come up like new. Bilberry even though they advertise it as acid free is still pretty strong on the alkaline end of things, so thats A) doing quite a lot of cleaning and B) stripping your sealant no doubt. Its not that bilberry is a bad product, its just that its not something you should have to use with a good wheel sealant. You either use a wheel sealant or a wheel cleaner if you know where I'm coming from.

I say you use either or, because most wheel sealants don't live up to expectations and need wheel cleaners then your back to square one. Gtechniq bucks the trend with this though, its very good!

oh and if you've already got 467s, thats going to last longer than Poorboys wheel sealant will anyway ;0

Jay... I will be applying the product to freshly refurbed wheels so can I skip the polish/IPA part?

Ordering some gtech stuff tomorrow :-)

Dunno about sealants but when I spoke to A1, they said to avoid anything kn the wheels for at least a week.

Oh right.... Ideally want to seal them before I put them on.

Do you dilute the C5? I just don't understand how 15ml can stretch to 4 wheels...

No dilution. C5 will cover 4x18" alloys, maybe even 19". You just apply very thinly. If in doubt, buy the 25ml version.

My brother drove over my unopened bottle of C5  :sad1:

I can't wait for the new batch to get here

if its your first time using gtech it's quite likely you will use too much and run out of the 15ml

Everything has to be thoroughly iPa'd with Gtechniq. Even more so if they have just been refurbed as there is probably more grease on it than a dusty dirty wheel

I've always sealed and waxed my wheels as soon as I get them back and never had a problem. Can't see what the issue would be as long as your not DA'ing them?

That's what I thought but when I had the pescaras refurbished, they said to leave them alone for at least a week. I wonder whether they were concerned re wheel cleaners/acidic/alkalis etc that might ruin the finish.

Cool. Let us know how coverage goes. I'm looking into this once I get my rims refurbed too.

As Jay said, it's the best there is.

I've never liked the Poorboys stuff at all either.  The CG 'slop' is even worse!!

You can't go wrong with C5 Rich, just follow Jay's instructions regarding application.

i found the PB stuff really good. makes keeping the wheels clean deal easy.

it was a bit hard to buff off though when applying but maybe i put too thick a layer on?

i did 3 coats when car was brand new (oct 1st) and its still working. I'm going to apply a couple more coats now the road salt is here though.

Thanks

Elite do it for £50. Price-wise you're not gonna get it cheap.
