Title: Hello and help
Post by: daz05 on December 18, 2011, 07:44:11 pm
Hi guys,

New member here, looking for some advice.  I have just bought a 2006 Mk5 GTI as our second car for the wife to use.  Enjoying it so far and wanted to ask a few questions.

I have noticed that the rear tyres are wearing on the inner edges, is this normal?  A quick google suggests it is a very common issue but was looking for some info from you guys.

Also, do they all sound ever so slightly 'dieselish' on start up.  I've had the cambelt changed at the local VW dealer in the past week so not to concerned about that and its just recently had a service at a VW dealer, it's on the annual programme rather than long life going by the history.

Is the clutch meant to have a spinginess to it on the first 1cm or so of travel.  The clutch is operating ok, is not too stiff and the biting point feels fairly normal.

Thanks in advance.

The 2.0TFSI engine does sound like a diesel, i'm sorry but like the rest of us your going to have to live  with it.

As for the wear on the tyres have you thought about having the tracking done, i will be doing this soon as i don't think the previous owner of my 2006 GTI did it. also check the pressure in each tyre

As for the clutch i wouldn't know i have the DSG version

I have a manual and the clutch pedal is very light (easy to compress) as are the gear changes. Your clutch sounds good to me  :happy2:

Saw toothing is a common problem on the Octavia mk2, particually on the vRS which shares the mk5 chassis.  I went through a pair of tyres in just over 5k until I had it laser aligned.  After that it was fine, until I fitted new wheels, think it needs looking at again.  :sad1:
