I just drive it slow and normal until the temp gauge is at 90. Then if I've been hooning I make sure I let it sit there idling for a few minutes before turning it off.

I generally give it 5-10 mins after the water reaches 90 to allow the oil to warm up to a more sensible temperature.

Due to the winter weather how long should it take to reach 90 degrees? My car takes a good 15 min to get there and rises very slowly, Is this the same as others or something wrong somewhere

Yeah, it takes mine ages too. In fact most of the time, because my commute is only 10 minutes it very rarely runs at the correct temperature for very long. As you might guess, my fuel economy is terrible.

I leave near the motorway so if I drive straight there it gets uP to temp really quick. It if I go round the streets it takes bloody ages to warm up.

I love the oil temp display. Really handy feature

Me too. Either way, I always keep the revs below 3000 rpm until up to temperature despite the temptation to hoof it down the on-ramp.

Yeah defo. Always keep mine below 3k till its warmed up.

As there is loads of bottoms end on these cars it's handy!

I have a feeling the thermostat is stuck open, Depending on what other people say tough...

Thats about how long it takes for mine last winter...

For those that don't know, bear in mind that the temp gauge on the dash is the water temperature, and that the oil will take another 5-15 minutes to get up to full operating temperature after the water has reached 90 degrees. On my 6 mile drive to work, I don't 'give it any' unless I was being chased by the mafia or whatever  :happy2:

Is the oil temp gauge an option extra?  Mine doesnt have it unless its hidden in the digital display, where does it go?

+1. Driving a MK6 with a full MFD and it has an oil temp reading which takes ages to reach operating temp at the moment. Wish the MK5 had one.

Polar FIS+ will give you oil temperature on the full mfd on the mark 5  :happy2:

Hope I don't look silly....but I didn't know that the oil will take a good 5-15 mins to warm up after the water has reached operation temperature.  On a MK5 how do you find the oil temp and what is Polar FIS+ ?

This means I won't be able to give my car "some" on the commute to work........probably be good for me as it'll help keep my license clean....

I have been speaking to a few people about this warming up issue (not mechanics) and they did mention that German cars do take a while to warm and don't really work best on short journeys but on longer journeys.....though I'm sure this is probably true of most cars.

On my old car i had a aftermarket oil gauge that i plumbed in and i can say yes it takes a a good 5-10minutes after the water temp is up for the oil to be up.
