Hey all..
Not often I ask for thoughts but really a bit stuck on this one..
As some of you may know im planning on changing my wheels to 17x8 and going to a 245/40/17 tyre, so pretty extreme lol.. The reason for the change is to save weight, but also running a smaller wheel by only 1" reduces the MOI "Mass Of Inertia" by a huge amount, so the feeling of weight saving is multiplied..
Thats why those Carbon Dymag wheels are so effective, there not a huge amount lighter than any other forged alloy or Mag wheel out there, but the barrel of the wheel is Carbon, so super light, hence the MOI is very low!! Enough of that anyways.. :grin:
The thing is im not sure what wheel to go for, there are a few options. Some of which look pretty similar.. Just to note, all the wheels would be done in Matte Black so ignore the colours in the pics below..
* Speedline type 2021 (looks like the Turini but its cast Mag)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo304%2Fjonnnny28%2F2021r.jpg&hash=d06f5ed2b83d09e6a5a734ec092228e4754e798b)
* Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2s (just like the wheels I have now but without the branding)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fkk265%2Fattaboy_2008%2FTeamDynamics.jpg&hash=035740f579e0ae4e13398138b1238bdd5e208efe)
* Dymag Mag wheel (not the carbon version, thats only in 18"+)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo304%2Fjonnnny28%2F17DiaCastMag.jpg&hash=b9d6acd492ecaebe7f05aa9951edd249748e2d29)
* OZ Racing Alleggerita
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo304%2Fjonnnny28%2FOZ_Alleggerita.jpg&hash=0d5c4180df30cf5b7420b113f10a1c3bf4c9f464)
* OZ Racing Ultraleggera
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo304%2Fjonnnny28%2Foz-ultraleggera-gs-3-2.jpg&hash=7e5ff5d51a7ad35c4222b2910f03b3ba6e3bc0d5)
* Compomotive MO1782
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo304%2Fjonnnny28%2Ftyre_008w.jpg&hash=b8083f411815ab53f0730ddb727b271e20cd1d62)
I have done a couple of Photoshops, just of the Compomotive wheel, and the Speedline, as the OZ wheels and Team dynamics are a very similar multi spoke design, and the Dymag wheel looks very similar to the Compomotives!
Compomotive MO1782
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo304%2Fjonnnny28%2F17compMO2.jpg&hash=3e758763fa8d5dc4242c1ae390b7671aa9e83615)
Speedline 2021 (Turini in pic, 2021 just has a slightly flatter spoke)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo304%2Fjonnnny28%2F17speed.jpg&hash=41ed64daeb5e0d7f211701f8a62b0182e9b8a944)
So what do you think?
I really like the MO's actually, think it would completely change the look of the car! The old 5 spoke design looks pretty nice too..
And yes, I would aim to be running it that low too!! Fully skate board spec! haha..
So let me know what you all think!!
-
I think the speedlines look really good!
-
My choice and wheel id love is the OZ Ultaleggera.
:happy2:
-
Go for the lightest :happy2:
Do all these have 8" wide options?
Do you have all the weights?
I'd still be tempted by the Alleggerita's, but the Dymags also float my boat :smiley:
-
Dymag's gets my vote. I think our american cousins would describe them as "sick!". 8)
-
the Alleggerita's,
:happy2: :happy2:
-
I quite like the look of the compomotives, bit different!

Yeah, all available in 8" wide in a 17" diameter..
Heres a little more info on price and weight..
* Dymag / 6.5kg / £650
* OZ Alleggerita / 7.2kg / £225
* Speedlines / 7.5kg / £400+
* OZ Ultra's / 8.5kg / £200
* Compomotive / 8.5kg / £180
* Team Dynamics Pro race 1.2 / 9.0kg / £112
-
OZ or speedlines for me :happy2:
The MO's would look even smaller than they are if you know what i mean. Evo9 fq360 came with a similar wheel design to the MO and it just didnt look right IMO :smiley:
-
For you it needs to be the lightest :happy2:

I'll stick with my first post then. Alleggerita's are probably the most cost effective and with the £1,700 you'll save over the dymags you would be able to make a better weight saving elsewhere :happy2: Rotational mass saving would be around 11kg, but I'm sure £1,700 spent elsewhere would kill that (swapping out stock screws/bolts/wheel nuts for alloy ones comes to mind, or adjustable front CF splitter for extra downforce/grip) :smiley:
-
compomotive
-
I posted up the wrong pic for the Compomotives.. :ashamed:
They are this design..
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo304%2Fjonnnny28%2Ftyre_008w.jpg&hash=b8083f411815ab53f0730ddb727b271e20cd1d62)
And NOT this one..
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi344.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp343%2Fshuntem%2FMY%2520SAFF%2520COSSIE%25204X4%2Fcompmo.jpg&hash=eea94b784039a5291c7751c2c6f306593c32acf3)
I used the correct wheel on the Photoshop though..
I have changed the pic in the top post now too..
-
Still like the compomotives!
-
dito.
-
Id used the 5 spoke for the pics too!! Arrgh..
Fixed now..

Looks even better I think.. Really heading towards the Comps at the min!
-
For you it needs to be the lightest :happy2:
.... x2 !
Though eye-candy always plays a part too.
All those you've posted look good in their own way. Too hard to tell from just a straight-on side view in not so good lighting.
-
Here are some more to think about. (NOT all 17's) :happy2:

And maybe a CF splitter :smiley:

^^^ PORN. FACT.
from the original selection though it would be the compomotives for me, makes the car look as hard as nails :evilgrin:
-
OZ seem to be the winner for price against weight but if money is no object then only the lightest will do based on your project thread.
Shame these dont come in smaller sizes.

Off topic but the guy who owns Khan Design has loads of nice cars for sale if anyone wants a nosey http://www.v12online.com/
White SLR :jumping:
-
Hi!
I think that from what you are looking to achieve you need to go with the lightest option as anything else is a compromise to you and you'll probably end up wishing that you went lighter anyway!...
-
OZ Ultraleggra :evilgrin:
-
im going to go with comps ;)
-
well in terms of quality and strength the MO's get the :happy2:
I had a set of 18's on a new Mini and they were ace
reminds me of this photoshop i did ....
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.johnoldfield.dsl.pipex.com%2Fimages%2Fweblog%2Fed30_mo_compomotive_wheels_large.jpg&hash=6c3b85ff7dc04195efc4b406aa1516c353688569)
However.........you are chasing the best of the best in terms of dynamics so wheel low weight and strength are utmost, so in essence get the lightest wheels you CANT afford :signLOL:
-
Looks - Compomotives
Sense - Speedlines
I think you've gotta go forged or high Mg content if you're going super-light, sadly due to the state of our roads. They stopped making the superlegs because they just fell apart when potholed.
What wheels are on Mike Kurton's 'Rocco race car??
-
OZ Alggerrita for me :happy2:
-
you should keep the TD's for santa pod and put some nice BBS on there for the summer :wink: you know you want to :party:
-
All very good suggestions up above, the HRE wheels are like telephone number pricing though haha.. And not especially light, those Volk wheels are again very nice but they dont do a 17" in our fitment. The Work full carbon wheels are amazing, but I know for sure Im not going to spend that much, and there only a prototype at the min as far as I know.

Speedlines only available if you buy 10 sets haha! Erm.. Group buy anyone lol?? :sad:
The Scirocco uses some wheels I have never heard of before, they look cool but they are 18x9 and a low offset too, don't know what type of weight they are..

Lol, so your saying I should get a set of heavy 19" bling wheels! haha.. Get outtt! :grin:
OZ Alggerrita for me :happy2:
I was set on the Alleggerita's until I saw a set the other day, they just look cheap.. Honestly, thats the only thing that puts me off.. They look really cheap, and there bloody expensive haha..
Just spoken to the guys at Compomotive and the wheels are £190 each and come in at approx 10kg.. Really not sure what to do, the problem with the Compomotive wheels is that there built for rallying, so they are not the lightest, but there incredibly strong! Hmm..
-
yups, some heavy 19's glistening in the sun :drool: + you then can easily swap back over for speed. :innocent:
-
OZ Ultraleggra for me....and not black!

What's the weight on a 17" Turini?
There's a good list of wheels on this site, have a search on the light 17x8's and see if anything comes in a useful size?
http://www.wheelweights.net/
But these get my vote...
BBS RG-R 7.7kgs

^^^^^^ Now I do like those! :drool:
(probably doesn't help you though Jonny :ashamed:)

They are classic and suit the GTI. BUT, they aren't quite Jonny's style in the context of his whole car perhaps.
-
Ha ha, I'd beg to differ RR...
They're forged however, so they'll cost a bloody bomb!
-

£700 each.. Errrr I think not lol..
I can get a set of 17x8.5 ET55 LM's though.. They need wobble bolts as there 114 PCD (BBS do a TUV approved kit apparently) and would also need a 10mm spacer all round..
£1200 for the wheels + would need to buy spacers and bolts, so another £200 say.. Pretty pricey again I think!
-
MOs for me in 17s car slammed wheels in black whith black wheel bolts so it looks evil :evilgrin:
-
OZ Alleggerita for me! One of the lightest on the list, and a classic design :happy2:
-
I have say that I think I'd go with OZ Alleggerita myself as well. But I've always liked the Pro Race 1.2s and I think these are what I will get, despite being heavier especially if you can now get them without branding - of is that a special order?
IMHO, I dont like the Compomotive design with the spokes tucked into the rim - I know its purely aesthetic, but it makes them look tiny. Same as the old OZ Chronos.
I'm sure its been covered before but can anyone post Monza weights for comparison please?
Jonny, have you had to make any modifications to wheel arches to get 17x8 fit on a GTi? What width are the standard 17/18" wheels?
-
what about these in black

Alleggerita's every time imo :happy2:

Not shure if it's just me BUT i think any rim smaller than 18''on a MK5 looks lost in the arches ?.

Im sticking a 245 profile tyre on it though, so its going to be pretty fat, with the car as low as I intend on running it, I think it should look ok.. For sure 17" is getting a little small, but it will make a huge difference to the performance, which is what mine is all about.. :smiley:

The Re30 is stunning, they are pretty expensive, would be interested to see what your mate says about the price etc..
Cheers
