Hi guys,
went to pick up a car today.
Originally the cars alloys were totally unmarked and when I arrived the wheels had been kerbed. This was freshly done as you could see the fresh poweder on the wheel. He denied this. We went back and forth on this for about 15 mins before he finally admitted he had clipped both! He would only take off £50.
Had a look through paperwork. There were two MOT's. The latest one had expired on 22nd December! (two days ago) He was visibly shocked and said he'd get one done again only after pressing him on the issue and pointing out it would be illegal and I wouldnt be insured. I also told him any cost would have to be picked up by him.
The car drove fine.
Back from test drive decided I didnt trust this guy so did a FULL HPI. Even though a member on here had kindly helped me out something just didn't seem right. So after entering VIN, mileage etc..A couple of things..the mileage ... came up with "the mileage you have entred is outside the expected range. Please ensure it is correct and click update to confirm. Note that the mileage will be recorded. Please suply the vehicle's V5 (registration document) details to be able to qualify for the HPI guarantee". I take this to mean they're not sure of the mileage? Also they mean I need to fully complete the rest of the form to qualify for the guarantee?
The main bugbear though is that the "V5 registration document issue date" just didnt match up on the system. I tried every date on the form. I then found a link on the website under the heading "Stolen V5 Document Check" http://www.hpicheck.com/what_check.html
It showed me exactly where to look (not that I didn't know in the first place) and the numbers dates definately didn't tally up. Called the HPI company theyre closed and not open until tuesday. Trader agreed to meet on wendesday. I mean even if things do work out well, I understand the documents may take up to four weeks to arrive? Is this correct or could it be quicker or longer. I will also speak to DVLA as well as VOSA. Or am I doing this all wrong?
Im sorry for so much dribble. I LOVED the drive, first time I'd driven one and I really wanted to take it home but dont feel these things are correct. I'd really like your views and help on this. I'm thinking of leaving the car even though I really like it. I may wait till spring time and get an edition 30.
Merry Christmas.

It's quite simple, if your not 100% then walk away, plenty of cars out there to choose from! :happy2:
-
100% Walk away. You will always be left wondering and worrying if you buy it.
Plenty of other cars out there!

^^ + 1, This is the only option in this instance imo :happy2:
-
If you don't feel happy, then walk away
-
Guess I'm walking away....I'll just keep an eye out.....Really gutted but better to find out now than later...Thank you for such a prompt and honest reply. It really is appreciated.
I really would be worried about the car even if it was a typo, don't think I'd ever be totally at ease with the car. On a lighter note still can't believe how amazing the car felt to drive....I know realise how bad my polo is!!!
I'll be keeping an eye on the for sale section...... :happy2: :happy2: :happy2:
Really can't wait and made me want my car even more....Is an edition 30 worth the premium?
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL!

Eddy is basically a GTI with marginally worse handling (due to something VW did to the spring and damping setings) but a bigger turbo.
Handling can easily be sorted with a set of springs. Having the K04 from the factory is priceless :happy2:
Worth the premium all day long if a Mk5 is what you're after

i thought the ed30 suspension shared the same product code as the gti springs...
-
Can only echo above, if not happy walk away..
Also if you've still got all the numbers of the documents handy you can check its MOT history so it would give you an idea what the mileage should be, just as a curiosity factor more than anything

I really dont want to walk away as the car was fine nut seems it would be best. It was just the paperwork and also the dealers lack of organisaton (are they all like this?) that got me. I still will call the HPI company out of interest.
-
There are several dates on the V5 form, make sure you get the right one , the hpi site shows the position. It is small from memory and not obvious.
I have seen before where people have entered milages incorrectly. If it was entered wrongly last time and you are entering a lower milage then it will flag up.
eg they might have entered 100,000 instead of 10,000.
As stated before you can check all recorded milages, not sure if it does it on the hpi site or the .gov mot site.
If you love the car then don't walk away right away but make sure that everything is right. There are enough places to check all of the info.
-
IMO you can't really trust the seller (why would he deny kerbing the rims and let the mot lapse) so I would walk away...
-
I did a HPI on my Clutter when I bought it.
It flagged up a V5 date issue.
The date HPI had did not match the date on the V5.
I did some more digging, and it seems HPI don't update the database as often as one would like.
I did a check on the following link.....
https://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/app/enquiry?execution=e1s1 (https://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/app/enquiry?execution=e1s1)
And it all checked out OK. You need the V5 Document ref number (on right about halfway down the page)
details as below, HPI still think the V5 was last issued way back in 2007......... :fighting:
Date of Liability 01 04 2012
Date of First Registration 09 10 2003
Year of Manufacture 2003
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1998cc
CO2 Emissions 194g/Km
Fuel Type PETROL
Export Marker N
Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
Vehicle Colour BLUE
Vehicle Type Approval M1
Date of Last V5C Issued 20 12 2011
Vehicle Excise Duty rate for vehicle
6 Months Rate £134.75
12 Months Rate £245.00

Walk away!
Plenty out there for saLe... personally i'd wait for an eddy...

What he said...........
Oh and yes the ED30 is worth the premium over the GTI as the engine has a bigger/better turbo and more desirable standard specification. :happy2:
-
:rolleye:
-
Wait and get an ED30 my friend. Not only does it have a better standard spec with all the colour coding/seats/wheels etc, but you get far more bang for your buck when you come to mod it! :happy2:

@ sub39h is the handling really worse? The GTI to me felt amazing Im still amazed and only now can do I understand why all my fave car mags and shows where in love with the GTI. Is the ed30 really that different to drive to standard GTI. What sort of springs would I have to get would they be just springs or full on coilovers? Also I hear the k03 is a detuned engine is that what makes it so priceless?
@ Nodz. Thank you think I'll have to let head rule over my heart. :sad1: Thanks for the link as well. Ill save that.
@ leslanos I did check the website. I knew where to find the date, myself, my friend and the dealer all agreed that the date taken was the correct one to use.....we the confirmed this on the website. I definitely haven't made I mistake on this as it isn't my first time of doing this. I tried every date on the form to be 100% certain. Thanks for concern
@ bacillus I couldn't agree more. Too many things. I mean he was trying to rush me and my friend. He told us we only had 15mins on arrival to buy the car. Later he had another hour as his "flight" wasn't till an hour later than he thought!
@ QD I'll have to wait till tuesday till ring HPI company. On speaking to friends they agreed that the HPI company can be slow. Time will tell. I really am curious to know.
@ MAT ED30 so there are no suspension differences between the ed30 and GTi?
@ E30DOM looking like I'll walk away to many things are just not right...what personally out of interest makes an ED30 more waiting for?
@ Greeners what in the specification makes the ed30 more desirable over a GTI? I heard the ed30 has more lag is this true?
@WhiteGTI my friend :happy2: must say when you put it that way almost seems like a no bailer to get ed30.
@ SteveP Im now confused so your saying ed30 has suspension as good as standard GTI? Or that the ed30 isn't worth the premium?
Thanks for all the comments! I'll keep you posted! I think its safe to sat that the general consensus is walk away and get an Eddy.
-
No both the same
-
The basic differences between GTI come down to cosmetic (eg body coloured skirt), interior (half leather, heated seats, red trim) and engine. Everything else is the same, including brakes and suspension.
-
Also with HPI's, never trust anyone elses HPI check/printout.
I went to look at a car once, the data on hpi was 2 days prior to me viewing, but the paper it was printed on looked like at had been kicked round the garden for a few weeks.
Having looked round the car & something not seeming right, did my own HPI.
None of the car details matched up on HPI database. Walked away. 1 week later phone call from HPI telling me it was a ringer :surprised:
-
No probs, hope you can find a decent GTI/Ed30 as it seems this seller is hiding something especially with his short viewing time and not being truthful about stuff.
Part of me wishes I never bought the 1st GTI I looked at but it is the 1st car So learnt quite a few lessons from that, but saying that the car hasn't missed a beat since owning it.
But as I said good luck with your search and hope you get a decent motor
-
@mat ED30. Thank you. A post said they're different.
@stealthwolf. You've doubly confirmed what I suspected.
@perky85 now that really is quite scary. Such things make me very weary of dealers. I will forever always perform my own HPI report via the website and never allow myself be rushed....
-
Edition 30 all the way, i looked at several Gti's and it was just blind luck i saw an Eddy come up 15 miles away from where i live and with low miles. This car when tweeked correctly is fantastic, if you can get one which is highly spec'd from factory all the better.
Mine had following extras
RNS510
MFSW
Highline
Lux Pack
Arm rest
Factory Tints
Phone prep
......only thing i wouldve liked which mine didnt have was Xenons but hey.
Manual or DSG it doesnt matter they both are great, ive driven both and wouldnt turn my nose up at either, you will pay more typically for a DSG and more for a 5 door.
Any car which doesnt sit right with you from the start is a no goer, just tell them to poke it! ive worked in and around the motor trade for nearly 20 years of my life, so have a very sharp eye when it comes to stinkers but always take care and listen to what your instincts tell you, remember its your money so never feel pressured and take your time.
-
I would suggest that if you're unsure if it's an honest car then be wary. If you're unsure if the dealer is honest, walk away. An honest dealer will sort out problems with any car, but a dodgy dealer will do what's needed to sell.
Your dealer sounds dodgy as hell.
-
Don't let your heart rule your head and pick the first car you view, keep looking until you find one that feels and looks sight
-
Im watching the classifieds like a hawk  want an eddy, 3 doors, DSG, MFSW and factory xenons....this isn't proving easy lol! But I'll keep looking thanks for the support and all the tips. I've learnt an awful lot.
-
How much do you want to spend?
-
I had similar problems in October, been looking for 6 months now, for the right spec
http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,35928.0.html
If your not sure then always walk away. Any decent dealer will always allow you time and answer any questions without hestitation, just make sure you do your homework. :happy2:
Id be happy 3 or 5dr, DSG, must have xenons, Highline, armrest, MFSW be great but easily retro fitted with it having DSG.

Wow. That post really did open my eyes. Seems to be a lot more common than one would like. Which is a shame.
I agree with your wish list, without armrest something feels missing to my eyes in the interior. I think all eddy's have am armrests, could be wrong. ED30 has red stitching on the steering wheel retrofit would look out of place with standard stitching. I forgot Highline display, again would want that.
I love the 3 door too not interested in 5 door. The most important thing to me is 3 door, xenons, DSG. The rest can be retrofitted as Ive come to learn via this forum!!
6 months is a long time to be searching for a car! I mean they're not exactly rare! Having said that I want my spec and nothing else so can totally understand and will probably take even longer as I won't allow myself to be rushed!

In a DSG car, the MFSW can be easily retrofitted - just need to buy the buttons. But should have highline.

Just being nosy. £8k - £9k buys you a lot of GTI, but not so much Edition 30. Personally I'd be looking for a cleaner, lower mileage car instead of going on a crusade to find the perfect spec car for the right money. I think I'm right in saying that Xenons, due to the huge additional cost, were not a massively popular option, so I wouldn't discount cars without them. They can obviously be retro-fitted, and who knows, you might even find the standard lights work well enough!
-
As I've always said, if in doubt, walk away, there are always others.
On that's note I've just stuck my wife's Very high spec Ed30 in the classified if interested?
-
defo walk away dude
still happy to help you with any more hpi's you need, with a possible dodgy v5 and dodgy dealer i would walk away, you would kick yourself if you bought it then found out there was something wrong with it.

i remember reading the settings had been tweaked for the Eddy in a review when i was thinking of buying one a few years back. took two out for a test drive just about back to back and felt the Eddy wallowed a bit more in the corners compared with the standard car - tho now that all you guys have confirmed the suspension is the same it may just have been because i was driving faster in the Eddy :driver:
bear in mind this was a long time ago and the 8P is my area of expertise/ownership. just trying to be helpful, i'm allowed to make a mistake! my point that the Eddy is worth the premium over the standard GTI still stands tho and no matter what the suspension differences/indifferences i'd still be buying it some stiffer springs lol

Hi,
Thanks for all your support. Ill patiently wait now before going to look at another car. Never thought getting a clean GTI would be hard work. This is my second duffer :fighting:

Its interesting to read peoples comments re: ED30 suspension settings being the same.
When I was searching reviews before buying my first car, several reviews referred to the ED30's 15mm lowered suspension - See example links below (if I've copied them correctly).
http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carreviews/longtermtests/208438/volkswagen_golf.html
http://www.autocar.co.uk/www.autocar.co.uk/CarReviews/FirstDrives/Volkswagen-Golf-2.0-GTI-Edition-30/223546/
This suspension tweak, combined with 18' alloys, was said to result in a noticeably firmer ride.
Rightly or wrongly, these reviews put me off the ED30 at the time & I ended up buying a 'standard' GTI.
After six months of ownership, a slightly more 'hardcore' drive would be welcomed.
-
It's 15mm lower than a non-GTI Golf. A GTI and an Edition 30 both on 18" alloys will ride exactly the same.
