Title: Speeeeed Blue :-)
Post by: djhorace on December 27, 2011, 08:48:09 am
Hard to believe, but almost had this thing a year and a half already.

Detail: MY11 Leon Cupra
Options: Speed Blue Paint, Tech Pack, Black Wheels, Aero Skirts, Aero Spoiler, Mud Flaps
Additions: LCR Rear Diffuser, Milltek LCR Exhaust, KW V3 Coilovers, LED Sidelights
Modifications: Black wrapped front bumper lip. Removed front CUPRA badge. Switched off cornering fogs and DRL's

I am quite fortunate in that I have 3 sets of wheels and luckily no 19's with elastic band rubber;

White with summer tyres

It's different from my old 2007 Leon Cupra - the facelift has pro's and con's compared to the Pre facelift.

Anyway, enjoy :driver:

Going down the same route as the last one Al?

Have you wished you tried something different or has the facelift been enough to keep you interested?

By the way, looking great in a lovely color and jammy sod with the wheel collection!

Hi Mike,

I miss the old one a lot as it was heavily modified. This one isn't. I put on the coils and have some big VWR big brakes to be fitted.

Still have every single part from the old car - may buy an early MK2 LC at some point to make in to a track car when they are cheap enough :)

Also want to put on the under car mods - you got the list of parts I need bud?

I don't mate but I found all the part numbers in the underbody aero mods thread on here easily enough.

Putting your mods back on a track Cupra would be awesome, just add lexan windows, lightweight battery and carbon bonnet and flllllllyyyyy!

If you end up going down a different route there's some one here interested in your Diff

I have the lightweight battery already ;)

The windows, seats harnesses and cage are all I would need. I even have a 2000 mike old Sachs kit ready to go in!

Will need to check th part numbers on here for the Aero mods. Do you feel they are worthwhile? What benefits have they given?

When I fitted them (large front one, under side skirt triangles & under rear arm ones) I noticed my avg Mpg on a regular autobahn journey climbed to higher figures quicker . Also seemed to be quieter pottering around.

I need to replace or repair the large under tray as I cracked it on a gate stopper.

Hey Al,

After the flying red one cant believe your going down this route?

Whats the pros and cons of the facelift?

Looks lovely mate. Like the blue with white.

Car looks awesome mate, love the blue.

I'm also interested in the pros and cons of the facelift and what made you stick with a cupra.

Any links to your old cupra?

Post by: djhorace on January 16, 2012, 06:27:11 pm
Thanks lads.

On the new car, I love the RNS Unit with the phone, nav, SD slot, DAB etc, and the front and rear parking sensors are ace.

Overall, so far, I am really enjoying this car, moreso than the old one.

The differences on the facelift I like are;
Centre part of the dash is no longer a slab of plastic.
Issues with folding mirrors seem to have gone and so far no gremlins on the Xenons either.
Flat bottom steering wheel is quite cool.
Suits the diffuser very nicely.

Things I prefer on the pre facelift;
Front bumper and overall appearance with the fish fin spoiler and bigger skirts.
Numbers on the dials.
The centre part of the steering wheel looks better on the older model.
The cruise control works better on the pre facelift - one tap on the button moves speed 1mph.

Things not to believe about features on the facelift over the pre facelift:
The XDS electronic diff - don't even think of it as some sort of wonder mod. Being honest, its as much use as a fart in a space suit. Standard vs standard, the pre facelift will easily live with a facelift car in the bends.

My hand was forced in to selling the old car, so when I was looking around, I found a garage who offered a great deal on the old car so I literally drove the length of the country to trade it against this, which was the cheapest spanking new LC I could find anywhere. Shame no garages up this way are that competitive - I am not the only one willing to drive 500 miles twice to save several grand it seems.

Why a Cupra though, and not a Cupra R? Long story short, I would have bought an LCR as a natural progression, but as the Cupra and Cupra R are all but the same save for 19's and leather - neither of which I like - plus the spolier and diffuser I added anyway, I figured it would be best to save £5k and have the Cupra. £25k is S3/RS money - which I refuse to spend on something inferior (sorry but it is).

I would buy another MK2 Leon Cupra one if it came up cheap enough as I still have a huge stash of go faster bits sitting idle that came off the old car, and I would strip it and turn it in to a track car. I saw a MK2 Leon Cupra for under £5k with almost 100k on the clock just recently, so they are gettig to the price it could be done. Not sure I would do the whole big/hybrid turbo thing on it though as the achilles heel on these with high power is traction, especially on a wet day.

Not sure I want another SEAT as a daily after this - this is my fourth SEAT, the others being a 2000 Leon 1.6S (genuinely the best one of all as it almost never had/has problems), a 2004 Toledo 1.8T Sport and the previous car being a 2007 Leon Cupra. I guess it depends what SEAT dish up with the MK3 - however, I fancy more cc and more turbo's next :)

Cheers

Al

Nice one Al. :happy2:

All cosmetic then.

I was looking at Golf R but same engine again.

I've had four SEATs in a row also but really want to try the 2.5tfsi.

Ta,

Al

No worries - the old car was a lot of fun and it was great when, in the early days of S2+, the lads with Focus ST's and Astra VXR's used to expect to own you and they ended up a dot in the mirror. I think most of them know better now though

 what mods are in the pipe line for this one then mate?

I'm thinking I might go for the S3 intercooler then S2 Revo.
Title: Re: Speeeeed Blue :-)
Post by: djhorace on January 17, 2012, 01:34:08 pm
I would skip to S2+ if I were you. The car won't run as well without the uprated fuel pump and its the pump, downpipe and intake (plus intrercooler upgrade ideally) that makes the power.
Title: Re: Speeeeed Blue :-)
Post by: Nef on January 17, 2012, 10:20:48 pm
Would i better off just going for stage 2 now then. Not too sure ill end up going for the fuel pump just yet, seems a bit rich for me at the mo.
Title: Re: Speeeeed Blue :-)
Post by: djhorace on January 18, 2012, 07:52:07 am
Why not just save and do it at one time? Stage 2 may work fine, but it would always be restricted by fuelling at higher REVO settings.

Top colour choice Al  :happy2:

How are you finding the exhaust? can you get that system resonated? My cat-back has started to make some odd noises and i think its falling apart from the inside out lol.

Post by: djhorace on January 18, 2012, 01:28:21 pm
There is only one silencer in the whole system Jon. The lack of back box allows the style to be possible. Make no mistake, it is loud, but it sounds good. Took me a while to get used to but I drive slower as a result which is good.
Title: Re: Speeeeed Blue :-)
Post by: jon-tfsi on January 18, 2012, 08:59:49 pm
Haha i bet it sounds fiery with only one silencer. I like the sound of a loud exhaust but just not on my own car. Did that Milltek exhuast hanger turn up for the downpipe?

Wee update - added the aero underbody parts today and changed the oil and filter, and put on a short plate.

So far, I am not convinced the aero underbody mods will help with comsumption but we will see. What was noticed when fitting them;

1) The sump shield never clicked in to place like the original item

2) The stone protector guards needed trimmed to go round the bolted fittings for the handbrake

3) The middle shield needed trimmed to clear the 3" Milltek  :signLOL:

I had a passenger ride in a Cupra R during the week and was impressed with it. used ones seem a decent option at around 18-19k although trying to get one with zenons is proving difficult and blue as well lol.

OK, wee update. Added a few things including uprated stoppers :). The OEM stoppers are excellent, but these are, well, in another league :)

Going lighter with this one to be honest more than anything - light battery, brakes, exhaust, no back seats most of the time, lighter flywheel, light wheels as well as the suspension mods - makes a fair difference  :happy2:
Title: Re: Speeeeed Blue :-)

Another quick update.

Original clutch started slipping, so in went a Southbend kit with SMF and fired on the gearbox from my old car complete with the Wavetrac. I am now running Pro Race 1.2's and 888's all the time now too - car goes very well. Also refitted the light battery permanently to the car as its loads lighter than the OEM battery.

Also, having tried and tested intercooler combo's, I am having a Pro Alloy Intercooler made to "Cupra" spec having sent my original to them and they will modify their S3 one to suit the Cupra pipe connections and fitments. That will mean another intercooler option will be available off the shelf for Edition 30's/GTI's/Cupra's/Fr's. This core is reported by one tuning garage to be more efficient than a THS, recovers quicker, is more free flowing etc - and these guys have tested S3/THS and Pro Alloy Intercoolers. On top, it is very light, obviously of decent quality as it is OEM fitment on the Focus RS500 and the finish/quality is superb. Twintercooler and S3 core coming off the car within a week or so  :happy2:

To what extent do you 'feel' the wavetrac working Al? Do you feel 'diff tug' for instance or is it effective but discrete in its operation

Cheers
