Hey Guys...Hope everyone had an awesome Christmas.... :happy2:
I'm Just looking to get my Edition30 sorted ASAP
I have just bought some S3 calipers that I'm going to get refurbished by godspeed very soon...I'm going to get some braided hoses, probably HEL as I
need them for fitting and I'm also looking to get DS2500 pads.
Next on the list is ARBS front and rear and springs (have done quite a bit of research on here as to the best combination etc) and it was irritating me for ages as I couldn't decide what combination to go for....So in the end decided to go for VW racing for it all...Anyone think this isn't the best option for a Stage1+ opionion are very welcome..
Then next up will be VW racing catback and Twintake to compliment my current Stage1 Revo remap and DSG remap.
I'm looking for a nice subtle mods with a nice improvement over stock as the power is way to much at the moment for the stock setup.
I had an EP3 typeR with full coilovers ARBs etc before and due to never tracking it was too much for road use I thought although the handlng was amazing!! :driver:
So basically my ED30 will be
Stage 1 REVO
DSG REVO Remap
S3 Brakes DS2500/VW racing pads, HEL braided Hoses
VW Racing Catback
Twintake
Front and Rear VW ARBS
New Goodyear F1 asym 2's
VW racing front engine mount
I'm aiming to do all this in 1/2 days in Feb after I return from skiing with the army.
My main questions are....
What Pads do I need codewise looked on camskill and it just confused me. PM'd DaveB and he doesn't reply to them on advice for the brakes and refurbing I'm guessing he's just busy...
Anyone think I'm making a mistake with any of my choices?
Also it's just had An engine and DSG service....What other things should I do to get it running tip top....Spark plugs etc....
Anyway Guy's any help Is massively appreciated...

Code for Ferodo DS2500 is 'FCP 1765H' for the S3/R32 caliper,
If set on VWR springs (i have these and i would recommend), save the VWR 'Tax' and just get the AP springs from DPM performance etc and get the exact same part for almost half the price...
As for ARBs i'm not sure on the cost of the VWR ones, but i have the H&R 26/22mm ones and its a great setup and probably cheaper.. :happy2:
-
Sounds like I'm already saving myself so money already thanks :happy2:

No probs mate :happy2:
In respect to your caliper refurb, do the calipers need new seals or a piston etc? If not and its just a cosmetic / colour refresh you are after then just split the caliper yourself (4 x spline bolts) and have the cast part blasted and coated (my local powdercoater charges £15 for a set in red)

Whos that mate?
I've just got some S3 brakes and wanna strip them down for paint...
-
I'm not sure if they need new seals or not what is the best way to tell? when I pushed the piston back they were smooth enough etc? they look in pretty good condition? whats best powder coating or wet painting? the place that I got a quote from for full refurb new pistons etc was £75 a caliper which I don't really want to pay if I don't need to? what about the rear part of the caliper just leave that as it is?
Appreciating the help :happy2:
-
Place in stockport 'Rust Proofing Co.' :happy2:
Myself and a mate use them for bike parts and other bits so it's usually a cash job :happy2:
-
the VWR exhaust is just a rebranded milltek with rebranded tail pipes. the regular milltek is MUCH cheaper
i looked at a VWR from the mk6 and it was about £250-£300 more than the milltek i went for in the end.

If the piston operation is smooth and the rubber dust seal is intact with no rips etc i'd leave it as it is, just split the front bit and find a local powdercoater :happy2:

:surprised: Thanks for that... appreciating this help!! need to save as much as possible on a Soldiers wage haha
Every day is a school day....Will un-resonated be loud ?

Thanks :happy2: this is what I will be doing tomorrow then...From memory do you know the bolt size to split??

Unfortunately not mate, think it's either an M12 / M14 Spline?

I've got a non-resonated on my mk6 gti and it sounds great. its more aggressive sounding but not any louder then standard until about 3500rpm> then it gets louder.
it doesn't drone at all and when at cruising speed you can't hear it unless you accelerate again but once at a steady speed it quietens down again. its really good.
the resonated one is VERY quiet. i thought it was quieter than standard when i test drove one.
non-resonated is 100% the one to get plus its 5kg lighter than the OEM exhaust (i weighed both when i fitted mine)

Next on the list is ARBS front and rear and springs (have done quite a bit of research on
here as to the best combination etc)
imho not a good combination, Jase.
Your shocks will have a very hard job to do with both stiffer springs and ARBs
(+ heavier brakes). First get a set of Bilsteins or go for a quality coilover.
-
i must admit if i was going for the expense or trouble of fitting springs i would upgrade the shocks too but obviously its dependant on budget.
if you go for a good progressive spring like eibach your standard shocks will cope fine though. they're barely stiffer than OEM and not massively lower so the damper is still in its working range.

The main reason for not upgrading the damper was I had an EP3 typeR before this and I used full coilovers and ARB's on there and it was rock hard and a bit too much for the British roads :sad1: but it handled amazing! hitting a small pothole was like hitting a breeze block!!! Would Bilsteins and say Eibach's with a subtle drop be a good intermediate option?
Thanks for the help mate! :happy2:

The bilstein B12 kit seems to be the best compromise for performance and comfort or there is the H&R cup kit which is a bit cheaper
The bilstein/eibach kit comes in either pro kit or sport line which is a bit lower.

I'm sure I've seen the eibach bilstein kit for the mk6 for about £500 bunt can't remember where.

Luckily Eibach springs are NOT progressive. Progressive springs are even worse
for stock dampers.
The Eibach are almost linear rated like OEM springs. They're stiffer than stock though
and demand stiffer dampers to control them.
Stiffer ARBs icrease overall spring rate even more. So better shocks become even
more important.
Just my 2 cents:
First go for a complete suyspension kit like a Bilstein B12 or upgrade your Eibach
springs by adding the Bilstein B8.
Then later if you can afford it add a set of ARBs and don't forget the WALK or at
least S3 bushings.
-
eibach springs ARE progressive :happy2:
http://www.eibach.com/prokit.html
the progressive spring will give a better ride as they increase spring rate effectively the more they compress so the initial compression is fairly soft then stiffens up
-
This is all brilliant advice! so instead off adding ARBs at the moment would you say my money would be better spent on Bilstein B12 pro kit with the WALK
Thanks everyone for this advice! :happy2:
-
well when i come to change the suspension on my mk6 it will be the bilstein b12 i go for. its the best compromise for the road from what i read and coil overs are high maintenance (threads can become corroded etc) and are usually stiffer.
though the h&r cup kit gets very high praise too, but i have always had great experience with eibach springs.
i already have the WALK fitted and i also have the whittling bump steer kit which i will fit next week.
the WALK is around £170 and bump steer kit around £140.
the WALK seems to improve steering feel/weight a bit and definitely improves traction when accelerating hard and turning at the same time, especially in the wet.
i haven't tried the bump steer kit yet but its supposed to improve turn in and reduce understeer even more so looking forward to trying it.

Wrong picture, mate, and wrong information based on marketing.
It dosen't help reading the manufacturer's or retailer's websites.
Have a look at real springs and you'll know I'm true. I had many
of them in my hands.
The Eibach springs for the Mk.V/VI are (almost) pure linear.
And I don't see any need for progressive springs. Linear springs
provide better steering response and turn in.
Progressiveness sounds nice to many customers and that's all about it.
They have a comnplex behaviour and so cause problems to the dampers
that can not handle the high spring rates when compressed.

Great piece of kit !!

Waiting for a set of these as well.
