I'm refurbing my S3 calipers and not sure what this bit does....Jase :happy2:

If i remember rightly its to stop vibration through.the pedal, mine hasn't got it on and mine are fine
-
As Andy has said it's a dampening weight to reduce pad squeal, seems to be pot luck whether the calipers have them or not, mine do though but seen plenty without..
-
Mine don't have them and mine work fine (I think)
-
ahhh thanks very much guys once again awesome help as usual.... :happy2:

Was speaking to Dave B about this the other day. It was only found on 2008 cars as it was a countermeasure to try and stop vibration. However it Wasn't the calipers which were causing the vibration. I was assured they are not needed.

:happy2: Thanks for this mate I think I may just remove this then? Looks cleaner without it anyway....Thanks for your help...I've tried getting in touch with DaveB but he hasn't replied do you have any other contact details for him? Or does he not deal with brakes etc anymore??
Thanks Jase :happy2:

I'd be tempted to leave it on as it can't be seen once the brakes are fitted anyway
Dave is normally mad busy juggling his away from home job, brakes, and a set of twins, but will get back to you :happy2:

Glad this was asked, as I have it on my 2010 S3 calipers. :happy2:

Sorry not been back to you, life is a bit mental currently and not helping by being away a lot.
Beddie's advice on the other thread is very good just split the calipers yourself using a T55 torx bit and retorque them to 75lb/ft no more....Emphasis tothe powder coaters NOT NOT NOT to powder coat any machined surface and that includes the pad gallery on the carrier. Also the single biggest positive step you can take is to fully clean out the rubber slide bushes on the caliper and use new silicon or lithium grease, also remove the Allen key slide pins with a 7mm Allen key and get rid of the inevitable crap that's on them and give them a polished finish.
The DS2500 I can get affordably but if you're on a budget consider the Mintex M1144 just as good arguably better and cheaper.
Now then.....that caliper dampener
Its fitted to all cars which have Alloy bottom arms as it prevented some sort of harmonic vibration, it was also fitted to R32's in 2008, ATE who supply the calipers to VW may have also used S3 piston housings with R32 outside castings as part of a supply issue adhoc but that's my understanding of it.
Never heard of anybody discussing vibration on R32 calipers Ali bottom arms or not, the development cars are very heavily instrumented as NVH is accumulative hence the reason why they're fitted if required....very common in helicopters

Dave thanks for that, Awesome advice on this forum very helpful as compared to a few of the Japanese forums out there!
Anyway Dave I'm happy to go for whatever you recommend if you say go for the mintex as they are a better pad I'm happy with that...I will only be using it on the road...Can you supply me hoses and front pads? will OEM discs and pads do for the rears until I find some s3 rears to upgrade too...
Is there anything else you think I should be doing while it's all off the car?
I looked at new metal sliders

But I have also seen somwhere that these are pointless?
Thanks again Dave for taking the time out...Jase

Dave. Is it possibly to remove the "coloured"caliper part and leave the rest of the assembly attached to the hub? (thinking about an easy solution to get mine re-powder coated)

I seperated mine for powder coating, the torx bolts were very stiff but eventually released, I would say the way it works would lend itself to removal while still on the car. My mechanic said it will be easier to re-torque the fitting bolts when the caliper is fitted to the car.

Rich
Wouldn't reccomend it, it would mean applying a lot if force on the caliper slide bushes as you torque up the bolts, the whole way the caliper works is based on these bushes being in good nick and the pins being clean.
There's no real short cuts, get em off and split them properly. I torque them up on the living room rug so they don't get damaged
