Title: Yet another RNS/BT/MDI thread
Post by: Nodz on December 28, 2011, 11:05:35 am
Over the next month (at most) I'll be getting all the bitsI need to upgrade my current set up to an RNS system and then getting someone to fit it all as everytime I fit something I break things  :signLOL: .  So I just wanna make sure everything I want is compatable with each other and if theres any adaptors/cables I would need to get aswell.

Current set up is an '05 GTI fitted with an RCD 300 with ipod dock (was CD changer),  midline, no MFSW and no roof aerial. Set up I want to go to is RNS 510 LED C or newer (price dependant) with MDI and bluetooth. Steering Wheel and midline will stay the same as it pushes it way above budget.

I know I will need a canbus upgrade but what else will I need adaptor wiring wise. I know to get an MDI with new loom (looking at this one (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-MEDIA-IN-INTERFACE-MDI-iPOD-USB-RNS-510-RETROFIT-KIT-inc-WIRING-USB-iPOD-LEAD-/270880071944?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item3f11b5e108#ht_1521wt_1252)) and an RNS with a GPS antena but is there anything else??

As for bluetooth this is where I start to get a bit confused and I don't really wanna be paying the £300 I've seen some OEM VW kits advertised for on ebay. I have found this one on the bay for £169  (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-BLUETOOTH-KIT-SEAT-SKODA-MFD3-RNS-510-RNS-310-RCD-510-RNS-315-5K0-035-730-B-/280794997081?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4160afa159#ht_1519wt_1252). I know it says its for the white dot matrix display and I have red, but I was reading over on r32oc that as its not going through the dot matrix as it is midline and I havn't got a MFSW this will be fine and I will have full control through the head unit only (which is what I want). Is this correct or is what I have read wrong. Also is the microphone hidden or will it be on show at the top of the A piller or somewhere as I would prefer it to be hidden.

Any help, comments or info on where to get them cheap would be greatly appreciated  :happy2:

Re oem bluetooth I got my kit as seperates on fleabay for under £125 same functionality as the one you've mentioned but an 7P6 module and also didn't like the idea of forking out mega bucks for the 729B module that has best compatibilty with Rns510 and hghline.

Get the oem mic that goes in the slot in the headlining lights console.

Under £125, that was cheap. My 5K0 035 730 D (MK6 GTD/GTi) kit was £165 including loom, VAG microphone and bracket/holder.

I'd also recommend the 7P6 or 5K0 modules. They are MK6 parts but work fine (or appear to).

I have originally set my heart on the 729B but they're too much money imo hence I went for an 7P6 module instead.
Scouring fleabay did the trick for me.

Pazz,I see you've got an 5K0 unit,do you have highline?

5K0 is same as 7P6. Doesn't work with RED Highline MFD but I dont really want it to. Already got enough on there and usually like having the MPG displayed constantly.

I was the same as you GTLEE. Didnt want to pay 729B prices just to have it displayed on MFD. Also without A2DP.

Pazz,
Does your nav still work on the highline?

Seems like there are a few of us in the same boat. I am really at a quandary now, but cannot justify paying almost double for an older unit.

Go for the 7p6 or 5K0 module all is displayed on the Rns510 so it serves its purpose plus you get A2DP as well.

If you want I can direct you to the ebay sellers where I got mine

So the 7P6 doesnt show anything on the MFD? Does it offer voice control?  :santa:

Only the 729B shows on the highline but as mentioned on previous posts the 7P6 modules won't show any phone info.

It offers voice control if you're RNS510 firmware allows it and also A2DP plus its compatible with most phones including the iphone and blackberrys.

Can you have the OEM Bluetooth along with mdi as both require a quadlock loom?

With regards to the mdi it's a bit cheaper buying separately. MDI dock £45 off eBay, loom £45 off kufatec and iPod cable £10 off eBay.

I ordered my loom yesterday and will be purchasing the dock this week.

Can anyone confirm that the Iphone 4 will work fine with the 730B kit? And also what features you lose out or have?

Well hopefully if i can voice control it, it doesnt matter about showing on the MFD!

Right so have I understood correctly. For highline you need a 729B but as im staying with midline I don't need to fork out for that.

Then would I be right in saying with the 730(x)'s that its the same with all other VW parts in that 5K0 035 730 D is a newer and revised 5K0 035 730 B and that the 7P6 035 730 C is newer than the 5K0's?? In which case it doesn't matter which one you get??

Thanks for all the help so far   :happy2:

As you have the midline IMO you won't want the 729B (but if you intend to retrofit highline as myself have done go for it ).

Its definateley a minefield regarding bluetooth options so choose carefully as others has got modules that won't pair with their phones.

The 5k0 & 7p6 modules are the later ones with better compatibilty with most phones plus its has A2DP as  extra features.

Nah I'm going to be staying with midline, it would be nice to have everything through the display but I can live without that until I change cars.

Thats what I'm worrying about as I don't want to get a BT unit and its not compatible with my phone (iphone 4s). It seems my logic is correct going by ebay prices as the 5k0's are cheaper than the 7P6 unit. As price is limiting I think it will be a 5k0 unless I can get it all separately cheaper.

thanks for your help  :happy2:

Edit:
after trawling the net it seems the 5k0's are the replacement for the 7P6's so a 5K0 it is

I've read in a few places that there needs to be a different lead from the MDI to the RNS to be able to run Bluetooth aswell is this true??

my MDI came with a kufatec loom and the bluetooth loom came from Carsystems Poland all working nicely

sry about posting in an old thread, but i didn't want to open a new, for the same "information".

Looking to put 7p6 bt modul in my mk5 gti.

i know it won't display anything on the red mfa, BUT will it still work with MFSW? Would i be able to control the a2dp audio with my steering wheel buttons? mute? volume?

does the sat nav still shows in the red mfa arrows and stuff? is it connected to te bluetooth in any way?

thanks..

Mk5 wheel will not work, only mk6 with 7P6. Yeap, satnav will work as worked before.

The MFSW will work if you have a PolarFIS Adv. fitted and the red display will work if you fit a Polar BT/Battery module (that corrects the problem with the MFSW, red display and battery drain).
