Another TM Tuning special here Im afraid!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fkk284%2FGreenouse%2Fledbulbs.jpg&hash=87e8db3f811168b99d9f8557ab343e31565d6656)
Ordered these thinking they had built in resistors, turn out they come on then switch straight off again as the 'Bulb out' feature cuts the power as it thinks the bulb has blown! :signIWS:
As expected TM Tuning don't want to know and said I should have e-mailed them and asked the question. When I pointed out it was there responsibility to make this clear in the ad they didn't reply? :angry015:
Anyway, anyone have any ideas as to how I can make these work as sidelights? :chicken: Cheers :happy2:
-
dude
TMT fails again
-
You will need a resistor in line to get around the "bulb out" error which either means cutting wires and soldering one in or buying extra connectors and making up a little loom.

Oh! :scared: Don't really wanna do that! Anyone know if VAGCOM can turn off the 'Bulb out' feature?
-
Never heard of anything like that but could be wrong.
-
Our friends at TM.Tuning suggested it. :chicken:

Thats an interesting thought! Although this topic has been covered before, and nothing VCDS related has ever been mentioned, so I wouldn't get your hopes up
Shame, because the light emitted from an LED is uber cool!!

It sure is, and even more annoying is they work for a few seconds then go off again! :fighting:
-
Yeah very annoying! I remember when i was replacing my rear numberplate bulbs with the LED's. I replaced one, and it worked so I was really chuffed!! Then when i put the other one in, they just turned off almost immediately! Little did I know that 1 normal bulb with 1 LED draws enough current for the car to think that both are working!
-
Ive read somewhere that if you wire in another set (IE, your standard bulb) and either cover them in tape or tuck them away, then put the LEDs in,
then the current still passes through and doesnt throw up the 'bulb out'

what i did was solder 2 wires behind the original sidelights ( + and -) and got another sidelight holder.. whacked them in to holes i drilled in the headlights and voila. i suppose the same could be acchieved if you replace the orignal with the 2nd ones
-
Aren't there any LED sidelights that have built in resistors, so you don't have to faff about with VCDS or extra wiring?
-
Been looking into this today and haven't found any W5W's yet that have the resistor built in. As I want two sets for one for the side lights and one for the puddle lights under the mirrors.
-
curse you with your puddle lights :angry015:
-
Can some one tell me what on earth are puddle lights?
-
the lights that come on underneath your mirrors when you open the door! Nousey - make up a little loom like the ziza use! Bulb holder wired with a resistor in series and a bulb end to plug into the holder! Most parts are available cheap from eBay and VW!!
-
^^^a downward-pointing light on the underside of the wingmirror than lights up the area by the door so you can watch out for puddles. Come on/off with the coming home/going out lights.

Crewe area , my lad thinks he's seen that rocco.
''well he said he heard it first''

I should have some LED updates this week too

Whats that then? do tell! With regard the LED's Im sure it's a Vagcom job as all that needs to be done is disabling the 'Bulb Out' feature.
-
^^^ Agreed, like most things with VAGCOM I am sure it's possible but I thought about it after our discussion yesterday and while I could live without it for the sake of a bit of work with my soldering iron and some resistors I would rather have it enabled. :happy2:
-

The bulb out feature cannot be turned off, only the rear light clusters command can be switched to LED to stop the bulb out light coming on.
The front facing lights are still checked by the feature for blown/incorrect bulbs
If you measure the resistance between the std bulb then add a resistor of the same strenght minus the resistance of the LED bulb it'll work fine.
The LED resistance wil be sod all anyway

....This can be switched off with VAS - My dealer did it for me.
My fogs have been replaced with Hella LED Daylight Running Lights with 3 bulbs per unit : -

i'd be really interested in any bulb that will work in the sidelight as the others have been changed and now there so white compared with side lights yellow

Cheers for the link am going to buy some of those :happy2:

i tried changing my sidelights but gave up, there very bloody hard to swap over!!

Got my LED's today :happy2:
So after a little tinkering with some resistors and my soldering iron here's the result: -

Next up the puddle lights and rear number plate :happy2:
-
....
Looking much sharper :happy2:
Does this mean you are going to drive with your sidelights on, using them as DRL's?
-
Maybe, If at the next meeting a friendly VAG COM person is about I might give it a try :happy2:
The pic's don't do it justice, now it's dark they look much cleaner and brighter.
-
^^^^
Good idea, but I'm an enthusiastic believer in LED DRL's :happy2:
-
^^^ Really Robin I hadn't noticed
-
what resistor did you use steve? 100 ohm?
-
my dads roc came standard with led sidelights :S
-
my dads roc came standard with led sidelights :S
As standard or as an option?
Are they standard W5W wedge fitting - i.e. VW OE LED bulbs in the existing bulb holders or are they a more permanent part of the headlight?
I've notice LED side lights are an option on E Class Mercs now and have been trying to find out if the fit straight into the existing bulb holders or if they are hard wired.
-
standard mate. theyre not in the headlights mate theyre on the strip near the bottom next to the indicators.. its a GT model though..

-
just tried with 2w 100ohm resistors, they work fine. the LEDs i use dont get hot at all, but the resistor does, so im going to locate that somewhere along the loom rather than squeeze it all in the bulb housing.
-
^^^ JPC, are the resistor's in Aluminum housings???
Here my next LED conversion, puddle lights

In the twilight there aren't quite as bright as the stock yellow bulbs but once it's properly dark they look great :happy2:
And the other plus there is no bulb check on puddle lights so no need for resistors :drinking:
-
^^^^
So it's just a matter of changing the bulbs.
And where did you get the bulbs please?
-
Yes on the puddle lights is just a bulb change, all you need is a small torx/star screwdriver, takes about 1 min to do :happy2:
The ones I have are the 6 LED version here - http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/501-6-led-bulbs-c-611-p-1-pr-17741.html
You can get them cheaper (from the place you don't like) but these are good quality IMHO :drinking:
-
^^^^
Cheers! [I daren't Thank You!!] :drinking:
I'd much rather go for quality than price. There's quite a few places I don't like, aren't there?
Oooh! I've just checked the link - I could have some blue ones! :jumpmove: :jumpmove:

there Metal Film Resistors. good for 500v and 2w.
puddle lights looking brilliant, sir! ;)
-
i put a set of led side light bulbs in my golf earlier on and they are also doing the same, anyone find a way to get around this, have u got to put a resistor in with them, or is that the puddle lights on mirrors???
-
How do i get me some of these puddle lights and coming home lights?
-
Puddle lights you need the folding mirrors.
For the coming home lights your car needs to have the auto lights option :happy2:
-
Yes on the puddle lights is just a bulb change, all you need is a small torx/star screwdriver, takes about 1 min to do :happy2:

Sorry for being dim STEVEP, but will these just plug and play with no resitors?
If so resistors......where and what.
ta matey
-
The puddle lights will work without resistors and not throw a visible bulb out warning (like the side lights do) but an error is still logged if you check with VCDS. :happy2:
-
wat about side light bulbs, anyone?????? mine are in my car not working so need to get them working!!!
-
You either need to buy the bulbs with the resistors built in or put your own load resistors across the two wires. :happy2:
I personally have done the latter and used the aluminum encased resistors to help disperse the heat
