Title: Space Saver on R32
Post by: Bikerz on January 02, 2012, 01:42:32 pm
I need a space saver that will clear R32 brakes. I resume none will clear the fronts? However which will clear rears? Will the 16" clear rears?

You should never fit a space saver to a front wheel drive car. If you get a flat at the front, take a rear wheel off & fit space saver to rear & then fit the wheel from the back to the front. :happy2:

on another forum a member mentioned his missus being pulled over for having a space saver on the front of a front wheel drive car. just purely out of interest, does anyone know if this is actually an offence, or just bad practice?

It's a no brainer really. Front tyres around 225 wide & then fit  some skinny space saver!!!!!!!!!. Front does steering, braking & puts power down & then try to do that with a normal correct size wheel & tyre then expect the car to do the same with a space save on one side  :scared:. Don't think i would want to take the chance.

Both myself and the missus have drove our stage 1 ed30 on 3 occasions with the space saver on the front without a single issue

Drive accordingly and remember that the car will only go as fast as you want it to go regardless of how much bhp or which are the driven wheels and you'd have to be pretty hopeless behind the wheel to stuff it...

If you can get a hold of the 18" space saver that comes with the r32 or s3 it will fit no worries

One that comes with the GTi is exactly the same and will clear no problem too  :happy2:

Right so to answer any of the questions asked? lol
The 18" ones are rare as you like and pricey as you like! Will a 16" one fit on the rear of a R32 brake setup?

On the basis that the 16" oem steel wheels fit the 312s on the front of a GTi, then it is possible that the 16" wheel 'should' clear a rear 310mm setup? This depends on whether the offset for the full size steel differs from the spacesaver?

I'd hold out for an 18" version though, quite a few on ebay

Not against the law as long as you keep to the rules pertaining to the space saver....max mph and distance

18" space savers are not rare, I had one fitted standard to my Pirelli, they also come with R32's, S3's, S4's etc. I recently bought one from a VW breakers yard for £50 :happy2:

The space saver I had with my r32 didn't fit over the R32 brakes, bloody pain in the ass!!

Bloke I sold some parts to recently was looking for a spare as the weld snapped on his when he was driving along and the whole of the car dropped on the corner where the wheel had come away from the centre part.
He didn't admit it to me, but I get the feeling he hadn't just been driving it to the garage to repair a wheel as he should have been.

If i renember rightly you shouldnt fit the space saver on the driving axel of a car due to the rolling circumfrence of the wheel. Due to the fact the space saver will be diffrent to the original alloy on there it can damage something. Dnt quote me on this its just something i read on another forum :)

Rolling circumference of the GTi/R32 spacer is exactly the same as the OE alloys, and VW wouldnt supply one in the boot if it could cause damage of any kind

I sold my 18" space saver for weight savings.

If I now would feel a need for a spare wheel I'd throw a 17" alloy wheel in.
There was a full size spare wheel option from factory.
That's why there are some polystyrol parts available to fill the space around
the spare wheel and to lift the boot floor.
