Asker IMHO your asking the wrong question. Your asking the salesman / rep speal that people are brain washed into believing is still the truth.
I know a couple of people who use to design DACs for a living. It was an issue 15 years ago but no longer. It makes no difference, modern DACs are beyond the sampling capability for the human ear/brain system to tell them apart. Unless theres a level or frequency responce difference after the digital to analogue stage.
This won't of cause wash with the Audiophile magazines that have to tell you otherwise to keep there advertisers happy. It will also not wash with the reps who plug the equipment or the established 'golden eared' so called experts BUT ask the engineers who design this stuff and they will tell you a different story (Unless there involved with promoting the company). Its amazing what your learn when you are allowed into the inner design circle.

Hi Geoff.
In a round about way I'm trying to find out whether the 6 CD Alpine changer I am about to buy will sound better than the CD player in my RNS 510* as I'm not happy with the latter. The FM sounds great though. But I do follow your point of view.
Should I just get the OEM 6 CD changer instead? Won't it sound about the same as player in the RNS?
Just thinking aloud.

Askers middle name is Golden Ear's :happy2: i do believe the RNS510 runs 24bit DACs if you look on some of the ebay adds, you'll see on the specs list.
I'm quite happy to be corrected cos its not my forte knowing what i sell  I know its naughty I should know my product but to be fair that sort of stuff is going too deep for me.

Frequency responce and level match them and unless one has real bad distortion levels due to a very poor design (has to be very poor) i would say you would be lucky to tell them apart.

If it was me i would be looking at something more like

I am sure you're right. Might change my mind tomorrow and not bother.

Thanks Geoff.
The JBL looks worth investigating. I know, I know, you have been telling me to get this for the last 1.5 years.
Cancelled the 6 CD changer.
I'll buy an iPod soon and a dedicated hard drive and download all my music.

If you like to tweek more yourself the Audison is a good tool but it would take hours to setup to be very good.
The JBL auto tune works imo quite well and its Andy Wehmeyer's baby who is imo extemely knowlegable guy about audio and tunning. Not to mension im sure Gary Biggs had an input to it too. (Google those two ). Ive learned a few things from those two over the many years. The JBL is not as tweekable afterwards though as the audison.
