Looks like I'm going to change the differential on my MK2 TT FWD (same as the golf). I have known the Quaife family well for quite a few years through racing and may be able to sort a discount out on some differentials if people are interested? I have got my TT to stage 2 and going 2+ soon so need to upgrade the diff as traction is poor (even with WALK kit and other suspension work!)
If anyone is interested could you put your name down so I can see what the reception is like. Hopefully if there is 5-10 of us then a discount could be had. These things are normally about £702 for manual gearbox's and about £930 for the DSG gearbox. I'm sure we could get a discount on any differentials so if you have another car etc that may need one then that should be fine too
Cheers,
Dan

Excellent! Glad to have some good initial interest in this. If I can get a couple more people up for this then I will give Mr and Mrs Quaife a call. :happy2:

Well this will be my first diff change on a road car but is more simple than a clutch change. Gearbox stays in situ but driveshafts will come out. I spoke to an Awesome Gti mechanic and he reckons 3-4 hours so not too bad considering the massive benefits. It's a mod that will help handling as well as acceleration grip and last for life so although a chunk of money it's well worth it :happy2:
-
The Quaife diff is the best mod i have ever owned. I use to have it my starlet turbo and i dont think it helped with wheelspin, you need a 1.5way really. Its into the corners/bends it comes out to play.
I could just plant my foot round the bends and it will just pull you round like a go kart.
Its a must item!

Cheers for the review  good to know what people think of them. The main thing with upgrading to a LSD diff (like the quaife diff) is that the power is moved to the wheel with the most amount of grip, so mid cornering when the inside wheel goes light and slips the outside wheel slips too because of this. With the LSD diff the power would of been moved to the outside wheel with more available grip which try's to eliminate any wheel spin at all.
Even under straight line acceleration the diff will be worked. The more the power can be moved around from wheel to wheel the better. This helps stop both wheels spinning more and more as momentum builds up. The problem with the OEM diffs is they don't move any power around from wheel to wheel so if one wheel spins then chances are the other will too. Having an upgraded diff will always put the power down to the wheel with most grip regardless.

I have to agree, it is a fantastic mod even if one of the more pricey that I have undertaken.
I'm not sure about the statement on fitting it without dropping the gearbox . The old diff's rivets have to be drilled out and ARP bolts at about £100 used to fit the Quaife so this needs to be figured in to the cost. Here is a link to a Youtube vid of a Peloquin diff being fitted in super-quick time which shows the process as it's pretty much identical

Looking at it, the gearbox will have to be taken off. Sorry for the false info. It doesn't seem overly complex but quite time consuming. Not sure how long it takes to do all of that. Probably about an hour to pull the gearbox out and an hour to refit so it just the time to change the diff out of the gearbox housing 2/3 hours maybe?
Will look into what the situation is with the ARP bolts.
Cheers for that info, very helpful :happy2:

Just found out that Quaife have a Crownwheel bolt fitting kit that comes supplied free with the diff so this is not an extra cost and comes in the price of the diff. So everything you would need to fit the diff comes with it.
-
Are you sure about that? I thought the Peloquin did but the Quaife did not. I could have that the wrong way around.
-
Well Quaife have listed that it comes with the fitting kit included when I searched for the diff that my TT and also the MK5 golf will use. Peloquin do also supply a fitting kit.
"Audi Quaife ATB Helical LSD differential comes complete with a crownwheel bolt fitting kit."
According to the website Quaife say it does. I will of course check when speaking to them as would cost another £60-100 for a fitting kit normally. But according to the website the diff comes with a fitting kit so that should be included in the price.

Jeez they hack those rivets out don't they!?

haha, yeah it looked quite brutal but shows how strong that crown-wheel is!
-
Yeah I'd want them to treat mine a bit better not to damage crown wheel so to avoid inducing cracks/breakages... take it that's in america...
Just about to have a clutch/DMF fitted in upcoming months so might be a good time to get this done... will think about it...
-
i got the wavetrac diff fitted - gotta be done if you are modding it to full potential and set on keeping car, if you plan to upgrade to something else within couple of years prob not worth the outlay as is not a mod that can be reversed/easily reversed.
when i got mine was told that peloquin was only one that came with bolts - quaife and wavetrac required them.
getting it and sachs clutch was biggest bill have had on the car so far :rolleye:

In all honesty I think a hammer would come off worse against the Crown-wheel, but I think a little more care could of been taken to do that. The yanks do seem to think power is the best method at times, still the job got done but hopefully with no ill after effects!
Well it's not much extra work if you have the gearbox off to do the clutch. I'm looking to do the same and change the clutch and flywheel at the same time. I would imagine maybe an extra 2 hours work to actually swap the diff around, well worth it if it's within budget.

Yeah it's not a oil service bill for sure but well worth it in the long run.
Will be looking into the bolt fitting kits but am under the impression that they come with it. Could be wrong so will find all of this out in due time. I know wavetrac you need to buy them extra but with Quaife hopefully should be included.
-
Maybe they supply it now. I know that I had to get them separately as did HarryVRS over on the Briskoda site.
In fairness to our American friends, I don't think there is a gentle way of getting the old ones out - that's a bench drill with a high quality drill bit, a steam chisel and a bit of 'percussion adjustment'

Could well be on the money but will have to look into this when I give them a call. Where did you get yours from out of interest?

JKM supplied and fitted mine :happy2:

I'd be game for this, depending on when. I'd also prefer Quaife (I think I'm quite close to them) or JKM to fit mine.

Seems JKM have stopped most of their bulk online parts catalogue. Will have to wait and see what Quaife comes back with and will move from there.

Well I will be planning on letting this group buy run for a month at least before I go ahead with an order. Mainly so people can plan their finances a little bit with this as is a little bit more than other mods! Also the more people the better discount which 5% on a item like this makes a big difference in price. What time frame works for you out of interest? If you are up for this then add your name to the list as this would make the minimum 5 needed.
-
Yeah, I JKM stopped their online webshop but I think they can still supply over the counter but am not sure - am in there on Friday so can ask.
ARP bolts here: ARP bolts here: http://arp-bolts.com/
(http://ARP bolts here: http://arp-bolts.com/) or I think Regal Motorsport and other in the UK can supply (if not already supplied by Quaife)
-
Well it's good to know you can get hold of them for around the £80 mark in the UK. Hopefully it won't come to that but will look into the options when I know more. Cheers for helping out :happy2:

For me it depends on the savings to be had here - but I'd probably be really keen on this too.
So at this stage of the list put me down for slot number 6.
BTW Manual Ed30 diff required.

?????????????????????????

I think I know where the confusion lies with the ARP bolts. The Quaife DSG comes complete with the fitting kit, but my understanding is that the manual needs the kit ordering. I had the DSG Quaife fitted to my old ED30, so know it comes with the kit. I ordered mine from Spitfire performance as they are local to me and got almost £100 off the list price and they delivered it free to Statllers where I had it fitted. I phoned Quaife direct and they couldn't offer me any discount at all.
I will be speaking to Quaife at Autosport International as I need to know if they are going to offer a DSG ATB diff for the polo GTI. :driver:

Yeah I quickly realised this was not going to be the case. I got some bad information and also am used to seeing diff's out on racing cars which are done in place without the box needing to come off. You can see I changed my answer on that one further down the page

Ah ha, right that makes more sense then why I was thinking the bolts came with it. Will have to find the cheapest place to get some of the ARP bolts and maybe if bought in bulk could get a better deal on them. It may be cheaper to go direct if buying 6 odd sets. Will have an investigate on this one.
The price of the DSG diff normally is £930 so he probably gave you a around a 10% discount which if buying 5-10 should be 15-20% so makes it worth while. The main manufacturer of parts will very rarely give any discount if your buying just one, if you buy several then they would be more interested.

As said in the PM, they want to develop one, but need a doner gearbox.
They need the gearbox for 3 days(on its own and not bolted to a car), they will arrange courier to collect/drop off, then its around 12-16 weeks for them to produce the full batch ( they produce a large output initially as its cheaper to manufacture in bulk)
I Would have offered mine, but i dont have the facility to remove/reinstall the gearbox.

Yep, that is the conversation I will be having with them. I can "donate" my gearbox to them in February. :happy2:

Yeah there isn't a specific car that this group buy is open to. However I'm sure the diff on your car is the same on the GTI and ED30 and most VAG MK2 versions.
Well I don't think there is a huge amount of difference between the diff's. I know Quaife is one of the largest diff manufacturers in the world and also comes with a lifetime warranty on every part. Price wise normally they are pretty similar. It's personal preference really but personally I'm setting this group buy up with Quaife for a reason, I reckon they have the best LSD diff. Guess Ford put their diff on the Focus RS for a reason too.
In terms of price I'm guessing a 10-20% discount depending on numbers so a good opportunity to get one if you are considering it.

Will keep all posted to how things go. What gearbox do you have on your GTI? Just so I can specify what diff's we are after
-
Can you put me on the list :), when would you looking to placing the order for them? My gearbox is a manual.

No problem :happy2:
Would most likely looking to put an order through in a month's time. That way it would be easier for all to prepare for cost etc. The order may take 1-2 weeks to fulfil from Quaife but payment would be due before the order is made. I could put the order date back a little bit longer if people feel they need a bit more time with this. Also the longer we leave the GB open for the better chance of getting higher number for the order and therefore getting a better discount rate. Not far from the 10 mark now which is fantastic!
-
Is this still in the planning stage and still likely to go ahead, subject to costings of course.
Was just wondering..
-
Sorry I haven't updated this thread of recent.
Yes this is still in the planning stage, just talking to my contact at Quaife about what parts is needed and what discount I can arrange for various numbers. Looking pretty promising but the guys there at Quaife are extremely busy at the moment so hopefully will hear back from them for good this week. Will keep all updated.
Cheers,
Dan

OK I will put you down on the list and can go from there when I get some prices/Discounts. I would imagine on the DSG box you would make a massive saving as they retail about £930 normally! Cheers.

If anyone else is interested then let me know so I can get a rough gauge of people and better idea of what discount we can get. Cheers.

I'd be interested in a manual GTI diff (depending on the discount involved) :happy2:
As, i'm local to both their gillingham and sevenoaks facilities (through home & work), are you aware if quaife offer an installation service???
cheers for taking the time to sort this for the forum :happy2:

I'm interested in this also, price dependant :happy2:
Throw me on the list please, manual gti

Cheers Guys for all the interest. It is taking a little bit of time to sort this out but want to get all the details sorted before I go ahead and put this up as a Group buy. Up to 10 people now which is great! Obviously this is price dependant but would be looking around the 20% mark discount to make this really worth while so the more numbers the better. Thanks all! :happy2:

I'm not 100% sure if they offer a fitting service on the differentials. I will ask as this may be a good option for some if all goes to plan. I've been looking to getting a decent upgraded diff for some time and this could be a great opportunity for all to a good price so more than happy to push this forward

Any updates on this Dan :innocent:

Any updates on this Dan :innocent:
Sorry about the delay, only just got back from France this morning and haven't had a chance to get on the forum.
Yes this is all good to go now. Quaife have confirmed for 5 numbers that they will offer a 20% discount off the differentials+ postage and then postage for me to send them out. The manual gearbox differential does not include the bolts needed for the fitting of the crownwheel but am currently looking at getting a bulk amount from ARP in the states and with any luck can get them for a reasonable amount. The DSG GBOX on the other hand does include the bolts that are needed for installation.
Normal price for Manual Gearbox Differential (QDF16R)= £714 including VAT
Group Buy Price= £595 including VAT + postage.
Normal price for DSG gearbox differential (QDF19R)= £948
Group Buy Price= £790 including VAT + postage.
How this will work is I will order all and pay for all through my own company then I can send all out myself. Quaife won't send differentials out separately. I can charge VAT through my company also so anyone can potentially claim back some VAT if needed. I will need full payment for the differential before I place the order. Postage hasn't yet been fully worked out as I will get courier to get all the diff's at once but will then have to courier each out individually which is fine with me. I would imagine postage will be around £20-30 but will confirm this.
Quaife do offer an installation service but it is worth double checking with your specific application on pricing. I would imagine you could get the same fitting service for potentially cheaper by going with another garage that knows the MK5 gbox platform (APS for example).
I have emailed ARP to ask about a bulk buy on the bolts for the differential which should save us some money. Also that will be going through my company as they may not be willing otherwise to deal with a single person.
I have got the discount rate based on 5 differentials as even though we have 10 I feel not everyone will want to go ahead. If we are getting towards near 10 firm numbers then I can get another discount rate, but will imagine it would be around another 5%.
This is the current list of names that I have. Could you let me know if you are committed to this group buy now that I have the discount rate.
The list:
1. TT-Turbo - Manual -Committed
2. Edition_30_P - Manual
3. Kregiel GTI - Manual

5. James - Manual
6. Bernhard30 - Manual
7. Been-0 - Manual -TDI 140
8. Gti_Mad- DSG
9. GarethB - Manual
10. fab5freddy- Manual
Cheers all,
Dan.
Also feel free to let other know of this on different forums so we can really get this GB going!
If you could reply on the GB thread I have posted up then we can make things a bit easier to follow :happy2:
