Title: Looking at buying an Edition 30 GTi. Advice needed!
Post by: Sonic6103 on January 04, 2012, 08:49:26 pm
Hi everyone,

I'm looking at buying a new car but have been struggling to decide what I actually want for around 2 or 3 months now and think I might have settled on an ED30 finally. My list recently has gone from a Range Rover Sport -> Audi Q7 -> BMW 335i/d -> Audi S3 -> ED30.

I have found one online that got me interested but it's modified. I don't mind subtle modifications usually if it's done right but this one I'm looking at looks ok I think, not usually my cup of tea but I seem to like it. It is advertised on AT and on PH and has been for at least a month or so from what I'm told but hasn't been sold yet so I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice about it.

It is advertised at being 350bhp but when I asked about the dyno print out it says it is running 266bhp at the wheels so to my ROUGH working out it's anything from 300-325bhp at the fly wheel. I don't mind too much about what power it is as my current cars are quicker than most cars I've seen but I'm wanting to start being a bit sensible and always wanted a Golf GTi since being a young kid.

The car is advertised at £11,995 and here's the link for it on PH....  http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3402359.htm

I'd just like to know what people opinions are whilst you lot are the experts compared to me! :)

Thanks,

Karl

I suppose it all depends if the car has been looked after or not. The fact it's modded wouldn't bother me, but whats been done, by who and how well, would.  :happy2:

Pretty sure that car was for sale on here for months!!

Not my cup of tea but everyone's different!  Looks to have gone a bit to far on the mods and much prefer an unmolested example.....much more classy  :happy2:

I've always kept my cars standard and in my opinion my ED30 is plenty quick enough for day to day use

However, I'm sure there's plenty on here that will recommend a few mods.....stage 1 on the Eddie seems to make a good difference but still very useable.

Good luck with the hunt for the right car, whatever you decide you won't go far wrong with the Edition 30 but be patient for the right one.

You seem to like the same cars as me.....Edition 30 is a fantastic choice for an all round fun practical car (especially the 5 door) They want too much money for that car and i would buy one off here. Also the mileage is high but i suppose that depends on how much you are going to use it......mine hasn't done 19k yet , then i haven't used it for 6 weeks.

An Edition 30 with more than 300bhp is not useable anyway and even the 230bhp standard as others have said is plenty. Get a standard one.

I quite like it, dont mind a modded car but must admit I prefer to do the modding myself on a std car. Although havent felt the need on the ED30.

You can always buy mine for £12k fully loaded, 37k miles if you would rather have a blank canvas though

With that mileage it would depend when the mods were done as even if the figures are accurate 69k miles wear and tear from 350 bhp is going to be more than a few thousand. A lot of those miles are probably hard driving and knowing there have been issues with the DSG there could be some expensive bills looming. Also IMO it is way over priced for the age and mileage even with the mods, not my cup of tea. If it has been up for sale for sometime then plenty of people will have walked away for one reason or another.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I have been thinking of just going with a standard one with low miles and as much extras as possible etc but I just don't seem to find any with lots of extras when I do look for one. Found a few nice black cars but majority of my cars have been black so trying to find one a different colour now. Oh and also It'd need to be an auto because I now only have one leg lol so my licence has been limited to automatics now. If anyone has any ED30's they can recommend that they know are for sale then please let me know.

I'm actually glad most have pretty much said it's not worth the money etc as I was a bit unsure myself.

Leonard please can you let me know some details about yours and maybe a few more pics as I may be interested possibly. If you need to email then it's karlboon@hotmail.com

Thanks

Do it  :happy2:

Just not that one. A decent well cared for one with average miles circa 40k would be worth around that figure in my mind. There does seem a gap appearing with similar aged GTI's.

Good luck with the search Karl, plenty of decent cars popping up all the time. Hold out for a good one though!  :drinking:

Hey Karl sorry mine is manual  :sad1:

Or could have been perfect for you. Xenons, Nav, ipod connect, armrest, Highline, Winter and Lux packs, folding mirrors with puddle lights, new winter tyres and ED30 mats and just serviced. Is that rubbing it in lol, sorry.

You just have to wait a little for the right ED30, sure a good dsg will come along. Let you know if I see any.

Some examples have been advertised for ages and they all seem to be very basic specs. The ones with a few extras seem to sell pretty quickly, i'd look for xenons, mfsw, highline, armrest.

Check service history, seviced ideally every year on time & distance, cambelt/pump every 4 yrs or 60k i think. If it DSG then the box needs an oil filter change every 40k also.

Happy Hunting

Thanks for letting me know what type of things to look out for :) I'll have to look around longer then. My friend found a good one the other week, only a GTi but has something really low like 23k miles and in white. Basically just seen an old lady in Waitrose car park one day so asked if she'd like to sell it and a few week later it was his! Just wish I could land lucky with an ED30 or Pirelli like that haha

I have been looking at your wifes earlier but just made a note of it for now because ideally I wanted a 3 door but both me n 'the boss' like the colour :) so it's still a maybe.

Does anyone have any idea where I can find out exactly what spec a car has? I see loads advertised but they all seem to be standard and the traders says it's fully loaded, got electric windows, heated seats etc etc and I just think to myself I hope that isn't fully loaded with just those things on. I am guessing I could just ring the main dealers up with a reg but I'm sure they wouldn't want to waste time telling me anything on a few cars when I'm not buying them through them.

The main things are fairly easy to spot on the sales ad.

Xenons
Multi Function Steering Wheel (so buttons on either side)
Highline (Full size display in-between speedo and rev counter)
Centre Arm Rest

Most things can be retro fitted fairly easily and there are plenty of folk on here who can help, so don't get too hung up on the spec. Just get the newest car with the lowest mileage/owners you can find within your budget.

If your stuck for anything else, just ask!  :happy2:

Ah right, cheers for that Greeners! :)

Oli - Just out of curiosity, where abouts are you? I'm from near Manchester so trying to work out roughly how far away you are in case I wanted to come and view your wifes car.

@Sonic

They are out there keep looking and you will find the right one.

Always look at the advertisements with a squinted eye.

Mine was listed on autotrader as a poverty spec at a Main VW Dealer.

Surprised by looking at the photos I noticed rain sensitive wipers, then noticed xenon's.
It was fairly local so went to look and it also had ipod prep armrest and a factory fit sunroof.
I don't think the dealer realised. Which was they're loss.

Moral of the story is... Be patient examine each advertisement well sometimes
You never know what you may find!

Oh and be prepared to travel.

Good Luck!

Cheers for that, I've got a few cars I've seen that I want to check out the spec on as they seem to be advertised as pretty bog standard. I just hope when I ring the number provided earlier in the conversation that they don't get a bit fed up when I give them around 3 or 4 reg's to do a spec check on.

I don't mind travelling, it's just finding the time to do so. I am in the Army and based in Yorkshire area, but I live between Manchester and Liverpool and I'm only back home at the weekends usually. Hopefully I'll be going back on long term sick soon so will have more time to look around and travel to find cars etc.

Annoying thing is, I got the cash out to go buy a Q7 privately but then 'the boss' didn't like the colour and I didn't find any others I liked enough to spend £20k+ on a car. That got me back to looking at ED 30's once again, which obviously I'm glad with that. I would go looking at a few this weekend before I go back to work on Monday but I can't as I've just sold my broken RS6 Avant and should be getting collected on Sunday and will be busy all Saturday. I guess patience will always pay off though in the end.

I'm in the same boat as you Karl, looking for a nice ED30 but I'm after a 5 door.

My current car, a Z4 Coupe, goes to it's new owner on February 18th so I have a little while to wait for the right car to come along.

Good luck finding the one you want yourself :)

Hi Stu,

Yeah was good seeing you both too, I was suprised to find you only lived 7 miles away from me lol even if I'm busy next weekend I should be able come round whilst you only live that far away.

Would do but they too much for what I'd like to spend on a car, I'd lose so much on the value if I bought one now too :( if it kept it's money pretty well then I'd possibly try to convince the boss to let me get one for a year or so.

Cheers for that mate and I'm gutted urs isn't a DSG :( I'd have gone home for the cash straight away if it wasn't manual lol but ah well, my luck ran out a while a go!

[/quote] this car was for sale on this forum last October £13,000, the owner then was from Cardiff, I test drove the car, the dsg box did not feel rite to me, and my standard gti with stage 1 remap felt quicker, seen the car advertised on eBay later and it sold for £8600 I eventually test drove another ed30 and it felt totally different and I bought it, :happy2:
I personally would defiantly look for a better example

Ah right, that's good to know someone actually test drove it and wasn't happy, I was nearly going to drive all the way down there to test drive it but after speaking to people on here I decided not to bother and I'm glad I haven't. Just waiting out for the right one, just a shame I'm limited to how far I can travel these days so might have to miss out on one or 2 good ones before I can get one that I can get to for a test drive.

Useable i said. Sure it can cope with it but that power on the road is not useable .
