Been going through my o2 bills for last 2 years as i'm coming to end of a contract and want to go sim only...
But every night at midnight 00:00:00, there is data usage, even though I'm at home (99% of time) and have set up for wifi...
Can anyone explain?

Do you have a blackberry phone?

I take it you have the new iPhone 4s, I had the same thing and got a text to say I had used all my data after two days of being given my new allowance, 02 are pretending it's an apple problem but did reset my data allowance.
I did restore the phone to factory settings on the advice of apple as they said when you download the new software it wasn't downloading properly , since I've done that its been fine, I'd try that first, hope it sorts it! :happy2:

Sorry i should have said... No it's a 3Gs
Apparently it's all the apps updated etc. at midnight... and the phone uses cellular while in sleep mode...
A bit gay!?

I had this even though im at home and the phone should be on Wifi, at midnight every night there is data being used that is coming off my allowance.
after speaking to O2 and finding out it is because the iphone reverts back to 3G after the screen locks. :chicken: :rolleye:
after kicking up a fuss and arguing i should have been told when i bought the contract,
they gave me a extra 500mb of data for that month and reimbursed me the £6
but surely there has to be a fix for this ?
anyone jailbroke their Iphone 4s ??
-
They tried calling it a feature :signLOL:
i argued it was a flaw.....
-
I have the same and I can guarantee I was on Wifi at the time.
It's a bit pants although I'm not too bothered as it's covered in my data allowance.
-
When I was with O2, I had unlimited data allowance.
Either way, I've always turned off cellular data if I'm not actively using it. Ditto with wifi. Conserves battery power at the very least.

No it doesn't, a requirement for iCloud backup is that the phone is connected to WIFI. It seems silly if the phone would rather update apps through the slower 3G.

As Nasir has said ICloud backups require WIFI & the Phone to be plugged in. But i'm not sure if the phone has a mode that it allows to use the WIFI in sleep mode whilst backing up. It's not something i have noticed to be honest as i had unlimited data with O2 and i now have 1Gb monthly allowance with Voda. Im using on average 638 at the moment.
Easy way to tell if it's not using wifi in Sleep mode is leave it for a bit then just press the home button. You should see the wifi symbol.

There isn't currently a jailbreak for the 4S, but they are close at releasing one
WIFI has always turned itself off when the screen locks for both IOS 4 and IOS 5 to save power
-
See if it's locked and I press the home it changes quickly from cellular to wifi symbol... How do you jail break a phone?

How do you jail break a phone?
You can use redsn0w 0.9.10b3 for the 3GS and 4 running IOS 5.0.1 only

Mine goes off the WIFI symbol when I put it into sleep mode for the night, but it always backs up on iCloud so it must turn itself back on.

Can anyone confirm, when you double click your home button on the iPhone you see other apps that are "active". It seems to me that when you close an app it doesn't close fully until you take it out of this bar, do these apps that are still "active" actually use data whilst they are not in use?
I seem to use a lot more data these days and to be honest I rarely use my apps etc out of the wifi zone, so I am interested in what is actually using up my data allowance.

This is multi tasking that allows switching between apps.
A useful feature of being jail broken is being able to "kill" all background activity with one shortcut

I must admit, since I got the iphone 4s my cellular data usage has gone through the roof. o2 shop said my average usage was less than 100mb a month with my iphone 3gs. Within a week of owning the iphone 4s I went through 70mb, and didnt do everything different to normal. I've had to turn off cellular data until I get my usage changed at the next billing date to save me getting a ridiculous bill off them.
I miss the jailbreak to change the overall look and sounds on the phone, wish I hadnt upgraded to be honest

Have a look at this for understanding multitasking: http://speirs.org/blog/2012/1/2/misconceptions-about-ios-multitasking.html
In short, apps are active for a short time afterwards but are ultimately closed. Double hitting the home button shows most recently used apps, rather than active apps.
