Title: Selling my ED30????
Post by: Gladiator on January 07, 2012, 02:10:01 pm
Not 100% yet but looking at alternative options to downgrade too as I might need to sell my beloved Eddie to free up some money for a move : (

I still want a quick fun car for a budget of around £7k and the only car that draws my attention is a Cooper S, seems plenty around with low miles and good specs....although the full recaro's I would like are a little rarer!

Anyone offer any other alternatives?

Don't want to go for standard MK5 GTi as too close to the ED30 and fancy a change if I do sell her.

Unrelated to your question, but i think ive seen your car around....
I've pondered selling mine a once or twice but cant think of what to get as an alternative so i've stuck with it and abuse my motorbike instead lol

The Mini's do seem like they could be fun, a friend has one but is forever breaking it now hes tuned it a bit and changed the wheels... its just not up to a bit of abuse or running on track hard

Whereabouts are you based Ant? I live around the Hemel Hempstead area.

I will probably end up keeping it as I love driving it and can't see anything that could replace it as well as saving me some cash!!

Nope.....but not the first time that's been said  :signLOL:

The GF doesn't want me to get a mini as I'm already to in touch with my feminine side!!  :pomppomp:

I've always loved the Cooper S and can't really think of another alternative to the Eddie that would put a grin on my face every time I drive it as well as being reliable, well built and fits my budget?

Hopefully I can keep her but just weighing up my options.

Short back and sides anyone?

Surprised no one has suggested a clito 197, or even cheaper a 182 cup, plenty around now at very good money.

Just being french can have numerous electric issues, having said that im running a p plate megane daily with 108k and it all works, no leaks starts first time. :signLOL:

Buy a Civic Type R, get a premier for around £5000 iirc and they tick most boxes. Look good, handle well, stop well and sound amazing in the VTEC zone

how about the older shape audi s3? my mates had 2 old shape S3's, a mk5 Gti, R32 and currently drives a new S3 sportback and he has always said the older S3 was one of his best cars for the sheer abuse it takes and its reliability and handling.

Thanks for the suggestions guys  :happy2:

I owned an original Clio 172 from new years ago and did love it aside from the squeaks and rattles, the 197's are a nice looking little motor too, although I still think the mini wins for me on build quality and reliability.

Corrado's, always had a soft spot but won't do it on the reliability front for me as I do a lot of miles so need something newer.....maybe a weekend project when I'm more settled

For the moment I'm still enjoying the Eddie and hopefully can keep hold of it for a few more years yet as simply there just isn't anything that ticks all the boxes for the money right now!

Yes the older S3 could be a possibility if I could find a well cared for example

I was gonna suggest that , but then read the bit about needing to be well built and reliable!  :signLOL:

We have have one or two Mini's and they are no match for the VW. They are quite good but no BMW. Too many bits fail or break etc but get a Cooped D at £20 tax and 60mpg all day long if you want economy , that's what we've got as a runaround

Theres a guy at my work who has an old shape s3, and he makes me cringe everytime he leaves work. He just simply starts the car up and floors it up the road.

The oil must get to temp very quick on s3's  :stupid:

Having said that he's being doing this for the last 6 months and the car is still working  :congrats: They must have good reliability!

I'm in the same thinking with my ED30 - test drove a new shape Astra today - better build quality compare to previous but very boring. Had a look at the facelift Corsa which looked quite good in SRI spec then saw the interior - very basic and plastic.
I was looking at a 197 before i got the Golf but i just couldn't part with £9700 on a 2 year old French car even though it had every optional extra and looked great in white.
I've had 2 Mini Coopers (non S) - the 1st was several years ago 9pre facelift model) and i replaced most of the exterior trim due to crack/ bits falling off/ etc, the 2nd was a R56 version which was a lot better built, did 37+mpg around town, had the factory JCW bodykit on and i fitted some 17" dare alloys to finish the look - loved it for 2 months before i got fed up with tailgaters so traded it in.
I was looking at S models (later turbo version) until i read on the mini forums about the problems they suffer (well it is a peugeot engine)

Will probably get slated for this but, my hubby drives a Peugeot 207 GTI and it's a great car. Just had a quick look on autotrader and they're going for around £5k trade - Same engine as the mini cooper s with similar performance figures - They're cheap to service and insure and the most comfortable recaros that you can ever imagine as standard!!

They're also quite rare (only seen one other on the road) as they were only made for one year (can be bought on an 07 or 57 plate).

Only downside is the sloppy gearbox (but driving the MkV GTI every day does spoil you!)

Link here for one on autotrader

The Mazda 3 mps and the Alfa 147 GTA are also within the 7k price range but I don't know anyone who owns these so I wouldn't be able to recommend.

Happy hunting  :happy2:

What about a E46 330CD? Can get a nice facelift for £7k.

My mates got one, decat downpipe, EGR delete and i've mapped it - 280bhp and 480lb/ft torque and being honest, its rapid! Properly suprised me how well it goes! Still a diesel too so mega on a run!

Have to agree with you, I came from a 2003 S3, great car, built like a tank but unbelievably dull to drive, probably due to its weight. no where near as fun as the golf!

What colour, how many doors has your Gti Ant?

Will keep an eye out for yours, especially at stage 2 at the traffic lights  :happy2:

Thanks for all the input guys, definately food for thought on some suggestions, no pressure yet thankfully to sell the ED30 but if needs must then might have to do it!

I have a 57 plate Cooper S, it's a very fun car after you change the run flats.

Looking for a 5 door GTI to add to the household.
